  1. If your PC's support PXE booting, you might want to consider RIS.
  2. Good on you, bro! Next time please use the Unattended forum for related problems, rather than the Windows XP forum.
  3. Check out VLC Video Lan Player. Its supports FTP http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html Not sure if it does exaclty what you guys want, but its definetly worth a try. This baby rox! And its available for quite a few platforms. Cheers.
  4. So you're also saying you cant use the keyboard. It's not responding at all? Does the Num-lock button work? (num lock light goes on / off) You could try Winternals Administrator Pack or one of the SuperWinPE bootable CDs that are floating around... Boot from the CD and load the registry hive you've corrupted and replace the deleted entries with the ones from your backup. Can you select "last known good" from the F8 startup options? Cheers.
  5. Can you schedule an event to shut down the PC in question remotely after the Backup is done?
  6. LOL! You always come up with the craziest questions. What must go on in that mind of yours? I don't think it can be done with a setting in windows or the registry. You COULD try re-soldering your keyboard.
  7. I'd be interested to know if you've resolved your problem and, if so, how. Kind regards, eNuffSaid
  8. Hey MaC. Have you looked here Also try opening WMIMGMT.MSC > right click WMI Control (local) > Properties > Logging [Tab] > and select verbose for a more detailed error reporting. Check out if you can find any info here. HTH.
  9. No Internet? What about online gaming?!? Anyway... to answer your question, you could create different hardware profiles, in which you can disable hardware and services. Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware [TAB] > Hardware Profiles (at the bottom). During startup you can select the desired hardware profile. The following page from MS should get you started: Hardware profiles Good luck.
  10. Try Total Commander. You can select / mark different folders and files and copy them in one go. You could also use Ghost to clone the HDD. Regards.
  11. I was asking about the Hard disk space it occupies. Not the version you have installed. Please reread my previous posts which you have so elegantly quoted ad infinum.
  12. Ok, you made your point. Now go send them your check.
  13. I told him that already in the first answer to his post. It's becoming rather obvious you are not reading the entire threads, and making a dumb a$$ out of yourself, filling up the tread with useless junk! And he already said he tried that, dude... lighten up!!!
  14. Yes, I am sure! Have you checked you're Add/Remove Programs? What does it say for you? PS. Please quote only what's relevant, or don't quote at all.
  15. I'm not gonna discuss with you what is better... NOD or Norton. I'm a McAfee fan, remember. Besides. Thank god I never need to email support. McAfee always works flawlessly. Lets not get into what is better or what not. There's a special thread for that. Ventilate your preferences and leave it be! PS. You may not work for them, but they pay you money to say that, right? j/k
  16. The only thing that bothers me about Sun Jave is, after its downloaded (what is it, 15 MB?), and installed... Go to Add/Remove programs and look at how much disk space its taking... What's that?!?! 110 MB?!?!?!?! (out of the top of my head). Ugh... for those few java pages I see, I'll settle for Microsoft Java (MS Virtual Machine) Microsoft Java = Security problem Sun Java = performance problem Take your pick. If you settle for MS Java, Google is your friend. Look for "msjava" or "ms virtual machine". Cheers.
  17. Sounds scary... Remove it! Also remove anything else from Add/Remove software which you are unsure about and are able to reinstall. Its definately something that gets loaded during a normal start, but NOT durinng safemode. MSConfig > startup would be your friend!
  18. Some town you live in. j/k Seriously... NOD32 is okay I guess. Haven't used it so I can't judge about it. As an IT Professional I advice my customers to stick with Norton or McAfee. Purely support issue. I do point out the performance issues one may experience with Norton. However, with the new fast PC's, large RAM and HDD, even Norton shouldn't be an issue.
  19. Sorry that didn't help any. What software do you have installed besides your clean WinXP install. Did this problem appear just out of the air or have you installed anything new recently? Also, I realize your keyboard doesn't respond, but if there's a chance, press CTRL-ALT-DEL. If the Taskmanager shows up, check the processes. Is anything eating a lot of CPU time? Any chance of opening the log files from the event viewer? Out of curiosity... I read you've checked MSConfig and your NIC. How do you access those without icons or taskbar and no keyboard?
  20. Or perhaps McAfee Enterprise Edition. Norton = SAV = Symantec
  21. Try this... At the logonscreen (which doesn't appear), press CTRL-ALT-DELETE Click on the Applications Tab > New task Try any one of these if not all... logonui.exe winlogon.exe explorer.exe And click OK ofcoarse... If one of these does the trick you may have deleted the relevant registry key. Report back with your results. Good luck.
  22. Microsoft has plenty freeware apps, too? Will those be banned as well? That guy at the original post has a problem with his PC, and he's a whiner. And now he's trying to blame Microsoft. What an id***. EDIT: One more thing. He's an AOL user. Poor chap. EDIT2: Great quote from Weird Al you got there Digirati.
  23. ...and your system is virus and spyware free? From my experience it may happen that Windows or certain tools are trying to update from the Internet or your computer may be looking for other computers or shares on the network, or perhaps even a DHCP server. Disable or uninstall any networking utilities you have installed. Also... START > RUN > msconfig > OK > Startup [Tab] Anything suspicious there? Try opening Windows Explorer and go to "My Network Places". Delete any mappings to other computers. If all fails, try removing your Network adapter(s) from the device manager, reboot windows, and allow it to detect and re-install your NICs. HTH.
  24. Hi, I reinstalled a PC for a friend of mine which was attracting a lot of spyware. After the fresh WinXP install I was fiddling about with his computer security settings. Somehow, somewhere, I turned on something, and now when I go to Windows Update, IE says ActiveX controls are disabled by admin. Even if I logon as an Administrator IE will refuse to install any ActiveX controls. Changing the Security to "low" in the Internet Explorer Options doesn't help any. Can anybody help me as to what settings I may have changed? Thanks! eNuffSaid
  25. Now there's a security breach... Have the administrator auto-logon! LOL
