  1. Cool..and thankyou. I remember this.. Too bad the link you pointed to points to the dead domain name.. However, it was/is enough to figure out the file name.. Which, BTW for those interested, is "tm9xME.zip".. Google it and you will find several sites hosting it.
  2. Note: As the documentation sugest.. Be careful. You can damage exe's and dll's with this.. I did it once during my testing.. To be safe.. Just back up the files you try it on by copying it.. I wouldnt call it damage, but it actually slowed down a few apps I tried it on.. I just copied the original files back and the speed was regained.
  3. Same here as far as collecting.. No prob with rapidshare here.. It is a tiny file.. No point in using anything more if you do not have a web server of your own.
  4. Anyway.. tested it a little on a diff machine... (I dont use 9x of any sort on my manin machine)... Sorta usefull.. Not automatic, you have to manually control it... But, it can speed up some apps.
  5. Just ran in to this in one of my reallllllyyyyy old download folders that I had not sorted through yet. I think it works in a way similair to the application prefecth technology in windows xp but it appears to work for all versions of win 9x, windows 2000 and even NT 4.x. I have never gotten to testing it, and developement of it seems to have come to a stop.. However, the site it still up where you can dowload it.. So, without any further blabbing... I give you the link to: Speedload 1.0 beta3 by Stephen Hewitt http://www.angelfire.com/falcon/speedload/speedload.htm Dont ask me how it works.. As I said.. I think I have never tested it even.. Maybe way back when I did.. Not sure.. Site and readme that comes with it tells all from what I can see. I dont see it being harmful in any manner and it should/could do some good. So.. those willing to try it.. Have fun
  6. I think he is talking about when explorer is dead, how do you get it to start again without the 2k/xp taskmanager's "Start New Task" option?
  7. Soldier1st, I'm using computers (PC) for almost 13 years now.. and I've started (seriously) with Dos 5.0 and passed through different versions of Dos/Win. I had about 10 different computers (not to mention hundreds of components) and 5 laptops... so I bet I'm not stupid And I'd say Sis are pretty cool actually.. I've benn sticking with them since the great days of Sis735. Now I'm using a Sis746Fx based mobo. Perhaps soo.. My 2 cents.. I have been upset with evey system I have ever worked on that had a sis based chipset. Typically the most disturbing thing was the lack of response/performance out of the onboard IDE controller. Regardless of drivers or drives attached to the board.. slooooooooowwwwwwww
  8. (clap) Way to go IRP.. I didnt see what comment you made but I can only guess it wasnt good. Wraith, never got to using your work.. Been a silent watcher of this sub forum, didnt have time to learn to use it and work out any problems. Wish I had even the time to learn to program to any level near your ability. I have experienced those that take advantage of a good thing, not with programming, another skill or another however.
  9. See this is resolved.. but a bit further info.. All files under "Ethernet" in latest nforce drivers are for ehternet.. Nforce 3/4 are now in the folder directly.. And the nforce 2 drivers are now under "PreNRM" If you have a nforce2 you only need prenrm folder. It is much smaller without the 3 and 4 drivers.
  10. Dont think this is against the rules.. Anyway.. It is part of the cd boot loader on 2k and up setup cds.. Look in the 911cd.net forums. Search for the very phrase you are trying to get rid of.. It has been done before.. Would get direct link.. But fealing just a little lazy. If you have problems finding I will be back tommorow and see if I can find it on that site for you, or in some of the info saved on my comp. Involves changing the cd rom boot loader a little.
  11. I dont like using self extracting archives.. It works, but.. Anyway, I added unrar.exe (winrar cmd line decompresser) to my xp cd by default. Similair to the extract.exe built in to windowss.
  12. @kornychaos regarding the yahoo dsl.. I get as many customers away from their software as possible. Router is one method.. Otherwise, use windows XP's built in PPOE protocol. Just use the username and password you normally enter for the yahoo dsl software.. It works everytime. Only time you need to use their horrid software is for initial setup of email accounts and such.. you can even use standard 56k dialup connnection from yahoo/sbc without the extra software.
  13. Thanks, but already knew the TCPIP update was available to public. Was reffering to another patch I referenced earlier in the thread.
  14. True.. sorta.. TCPIP.SYS update to resolve VPN problem was a security risk to me, it prevented a customer of mine from usign their vpn all together. Update for Highmat CD burning support is on windows update though.. I dont see that as a security risk? Still, I would like to see their no public released updates a little more aceessable. Heck, even finding the tech article for one can be a chore to begin with. Then I have to call them and get a password to download the bugger..
  15. Cool... I really dont need that patch myself.. Buy, I wish microsoft would stop being so secretive/protective of their non-official (or whatever you want to call them) hot fixes. Like the one that is still not on windows update but was luckily a big enough problem for people to notice and thus be posted all over the net. By "the one" i mean the one that updated tcpip.sys to solve the VPN client connection problems.
  16. Hmm.. link already dead? When I try to download... invalid file! Anyone know a alternate place to get this?
  17. This thread is for only official hotfixes that dont require contacting MS right? Otherwise.. here is one of many available for download if you get a hold of MS for the password for the hotfix ftp. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883523 BTW.. KB article only.. no download links
  18. buletov is correct.. it is not a problem with the drivers.. Certain drivers exhibit the problem where others dont, but it for all reasons appears to be a problem with windows.. Problem is, ms will prpbalyl never fix for a very logical reason.... If you are doing a unattended setup, why would you be wanting to hit f6 and load drivers vs have them integrated in to the OEM structure of the cd... So.. they probally dont care.. What we are trying to do is get the best of both worlds, unattended and attended.
  19. Like.....in what way??? What makes you believe that Raid 0 is fast? As far as I know Raid 0 gives a marginal improvement over a single drive or in some cases even decreased performance. Granted Raid 0 may blow away single drive setups in benchmark apps, try the same in desktop applications and games. You will eat your words. This coming from a guy who has been using Raid 0 setup for the last 3 years...and now a convert! I will not eat my shorts.. I have been using for atleast 3-4 years also. And have used much higher level controllers capable of up to raid level 5. I own two promise supertrak sx6000's in fact. Not to mention several others. (Currently a Promise tx 2000 in my desktop machine) Simply put, make two machines identical down to using raid 0 vs a single drive.. I can tell you by watching Windows startup up and wait till explorer starts and tell you the difference right there.
  20. Dont say that.. never say that.. Raid, atleast level 0 is so wicked fast... Maybe the Sneaky one will make an addition to his raid driver pack.. Another solution, assuming you are using it now, it to not use a unnatended file.. then F6 should let you get it running.
  21. @Bâshrat the Sneaky I know you may just be getting use to updating this collection, but I have an idea to improve it. Atleast for method 1. 2 Facts 1. I, like many, use cdimage.exe (or mkisofs) to make isos that double reernece identical files to save space. 2. Many drivers can install from inf form if the files are compressed in cab form (windows automatically checks and extracts files ending in such manner "xxx.xx_") So, what I am saying is, compress the files left under the $OEM$ folder also, not jsut the ones sent to the i386 folder. This way cdimage.exe will see the files stored in both locations as one. If this works, counting just the 50+ files sent to i386, we would already be saving atleast 2.5mb plus for people using method 1. Further more, the part of txtmode setup where all $OEM$ files are copied (including the drivers folder) would be faster as there would be less to copy. BTW @Lucius Snow Not answering for Bâshrat the Sneaky, but based on what info if mentioned in "Add_to_winntsif.htm", you are correct i fixing the nvidia drivers in that way. Well, they will work that way atleast.
  22. Oops.. foregot about this thread.. @Dutchy, ever figure it out? Also, reason I asked as far as AntiVirus as there is a bit of a install problem with Avast (I use) and sp2 that prevent InstallShield isntlallers in particulair from running. This is weather or not the windows installer is messed up or not (also common to sp2).
  23. Sorta fixed Bâshrat the Sneaky.. It is avoiding the problem. Problem exist when loading driver with f6 and using a unnatended install... I have seen it even in sp1. True, a long time ago some of the very first Silicon Image drivers worked. THen, they stoped, only would work with F6/Floppy loading if you were not using a unnatended install. The strange thing is, it is not unique to Silicon Image drivers... But, it is not a problem will all manuafacturers either.. BTW, Bâshrat the Sneaky, thanks for continuing the work on the RAID driver pack.. Saves me a bunch of time (i still prefer to have them on cd vs floppy), and I like having support for so many controllers.
  24. Well.. two ways to unnattened isntall.. Either use the MSI installer from MS with unattended switch. Or use this: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved] "{709C6E11-538F-4759-86AC-6ACB302AA0DE}"="Desktop Manager" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SharedDlls] "C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\msvdm.dll"=dword:00000002 "C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\vdm.chm"=dword:00000002 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{709C6E11-538F-4759-86AC-6ACB302AA0DE}] @="Desktop Manager" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{709C6E11-538F-4759-86AC-6ACB302AA0DE}\Implemented Categories] @="" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{709C6E11-538F-4759-86AC-6ACB302AA0DE}\Implemented Categories\{00021492-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}] @="" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{709C6E11-538F-4759-86AC-6ACB302AA0DE}\InProcServer32] "ThreadingModel"="Apartment" @="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\msvdm.dll" And get the msvdm.dll and vdm.chm files to system32 by some other means. Note, the registry entries above are only for installing it. To get it to show up automatically you will have to capture the same registry information related to turning on the the explore (not internet exlorer) status bar.
