  1. Simplest (most likely solution).. On both machines.. 1. Go to "Folder Options" 2. Make sure "Use simple file sharing" is un checked.. If it was checked on either, un check it. Restart both machines.. Then try to access the shares..
  2. Yeah, I dont think it hides any devices like the device manager does by default.. You might be able to add a contextual menu item to "My Computer" for it.. Do a search in this forum for hot to add custom menu items..
  3. I figured it was the maped drives.. You might have a slow machine you are connecting too.. Otherwise, if you are logging in with a username and password (beyond guest/anonymous access), try setting up an account on the remote machine with the same username and password as the local machine logs in as.. This way you can just use one set of credentials.. This has helped in the past sometimes.
  4. Device manager is worthless for finding drivers.. Here, try "Unknown Devices" http://www.halfdone.com/Development/UnknownDevices/ Then google the info you find to look for a proper driver..
  5. Have any network shares mapped to drive letters that automatically restore after reboot?
  6. Well I admit I am not into the OS's or Software that much, But I did find the best place to get a answer for my question. I will be checking in here more often. Tmod Did you try DSKMAINT.DLL that MDGx mentioned in your other thread? I assume you must have used a older version of 98SE2ME to end up with that file being replaced.
  7. The great Tmod.. I was just suprised to see you only recently joined a great forum like MSFN..
  8. 1. Boot from your XP Install CD. 2. Choose "R" for recovery console.. 3. Run the "fix mbr" command. 4. Say yes to replace.. Finally, stop using Partition Magic. It is known for doing this.. Example.. Search google for "Partition Magic fix mbr".. This is great when it works correctly.. But that problem with the MBR is a PITA. BTW, the cd lets the os load from the HD as you noted.. Because it bypasses the MBR.. I tink I worded that correctly.. Anyway.. Just run the stuff above..
  9. Or get familiar with the "reg" command from a command prompt.. In particulair, "reg del".. It has an advantage over regedit if you dont want any gui dependencies.. Also, dont need a seperate .reg file..
  10. Interesting, that hotfix only changes one file in XP 32-bit.. "netapi32.dll"
  11. Got a link or the specs on this thing.. I have seen it caused by a few things. Sometimes a bios update did the trick.. Others were because of some IDE controller drivers.
  12. I vist the 9x subforum mainly to be able to provide support for other people I know who use 9x. I rarely use it myself anymore.. Still.. Had to step in and say congrats and awsome work..
  13. No one scorn me for helping anyway.. Like he said, wrong forum. Visit toshiba's homepage and go to support.. Lookup the exact model of your toshiba and there should be a downlaods section with all the drivers you need. They have a pretty good support site for downloads.
  14. You are in luck.. Check out a program called OnTop on donationcoder.com http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Skro...ndex.html#OnTop
  15. Before doing something like reinstalling windows.. Disable the messenger service.. A normal home user doesnt need it.. In fact, it should be off if you have SP2 isntalled anyway.. SP2 disables it by default last I remember reading. Otherwise, yes.. It is random messeges being sent.. Or, here is an idea.. turn a firewall on.. If you have one (and it is configured correctly) you shouldnt be seeing this message anyway.. If it turns back on by itself.. You got spyware or something that shouldnt be running..
  16. Hmm. sounds like it might be the cd drive.. Have you seen if you can read all the files off the cd from within windows on the laptop? If it cant, cd drive isnt going to do for getting it installed.. Otherwise, burn the cd slower.. That is the only help I can think of relating to the drive. Hey, you happen to be Dark Cloud from the DHP forum?
  17. Unfortunately, never had it happen before.. For now, I would just use the command promt instead of the gui functionality. Hey, you happen to be Tmod.. Bios modding Tmod I have seen elsewhere on the net? Bootable cd for bios flashing I think..
  18. You tried this logged in as the local administrator? (Not domain account) If so, just go grab a copy of PE Builder from www.nu2.nu and build a cd.. Boot off that and move the files and reset the permisions. You will be logged in as the System account.. If you cant reset it that way.. welll..
  19. Recent find I like.. The win32 port of player.. I knew about mplayer for linux for quite some time, but the win32 port is nice now too.. http://www.mplayerhq.hu Plus, if you want a GUI for it (since it is command line control normally) http://mpui.sourceforge.net/
  20. It is before you see the desktop, but after the boot screen right? The login screen. Have you had any spyware/adware issues in the past? Reason I ask is because you might have some broken winlogon items sitting in the registry.. Otherwise, yes.. General startup items dont help either.. Like some have mentioned, tone down the number of utilities going on.. You shouldnt need that many.. Especially so many that are always starting up and running on their own.. If you want to go to the extreme.. After a lot of tweaking and tuning, in opinion, there is a point where a nice clean install of windows is a better bet.. It will seem a lot smoother.. And if you can afford the time (reinstall, moving documents, etc), it is well worth it.. I wouldnt recommend everyone or just anyone doing this regularly though. Those are a few starters.. If it is after the login screen.. It is mostly higher level software.. Not low level like drivers and such.
  21. Like he said.. Plus Both of those are related to the Windows sound system.. Sounds like your Creative driver didnt install all the way or something.
  22. Since you can get it to work, but then it is broken after restart.. One thing comes to mind.. A broken piece of spyware/adware using a winsock addition.. Every reboot it is try to add it back in, but is somehow failing.. Possibily creating the registry key, but the dll the winsock addtion is supposed to use is missing.. Try LSP-FIX or if that doesnt work, post a thread again.. I can give you a quick registry file that will wipe out the winsock registry section and just import the the stock settings again.. If it still keeps coming back after restart, I would still suspect broken spyware.. I have to admit rightnow, I am not a fan of Norton AntiVirus anymore.. Viruses, eh... But for spyware, it doesnt fill me with confidence.. You might need a little more software to attack this.. Possibly some other antivirus.. Or to start with, Spybot or some sort of dedicate antispyware software..
  23. Direct link to specs page for the motherboard in that machine.. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documen...ocname=bph07813 Actually, it says up to 48 mb.. The number isnt the key.. The words "Up to" are.. It is sucking memory from your main ram.. That means the driver could actually be respoinsible for reserving the amount of ram.. You are obviously using a different driver then you were before (9x vs XP).. If you havent already, I would check for the latest IGP driver from Intel for the 845GL chipset.. It might default to a higher amount of ram being used for the video.. Or, you might be able to select it through the drivers little control application Intel includes..
  24. I have extractnow and some other programs installed.. But for extracting, I use WinRAR.. I know for a fact you can extract those files from a cab file without problems just by rightclicking and selecting extract in the the WinRAR shell extension.
  25. In case it comes back and it isnt related to heat, if this is happening in Internet Explorer, try Firefox or some other browser like Opera.. This can happen in IE on a perfectly fine running machine in some cases too. I know what the problem is, but it isnt worth resolving in IE because it will eventually return again..
