Thanks for replying! The last official Chrome which supported Windows XP was the version 49.0.2623.112. I think I have a copy of it in my archive. In any case, I will check if the hardware acceleration worked at all in this version on my hardware and report here.3 points

Windows Update pulled down the Cumulative Update today on both Server 2025 and IOT Ent LTSC to 26100.863 - no SAB issues seen. Nice. Don't you love it when software just works?2 points

Yeah, but it's not my idea, I actually wanted to further elaborate on what you wrote about Chrome 49! With a simple calculation, if they already knew it was blocked on XP almost 12 years ago, it brings us back to 2012 - early 2013. What was the Chrome version, then? 21? 20? 19? 18? So, it was blocked centuries ago! Overall, I agree with you, not a good idea at all.2 points

Good! In this case we (at least) know who will read through our communications! That VPN is supposedly aimed to use SHA 2, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SHA-2 SHA-2 (Secure Hash Algorithm 2) is a set of cryptographic hash functions designed by the United States National Security Agency (NSA), NSA are the good guys, I don't mind them reading my emails, I don't plot against America.2 points

"Chrome developers disabled Canvas HW Accel for XP (the artcile is about 12 years old!), it calls Direct3DCreate9Ex from d3d9.dll which is DirectX 9L available only on Vista+, but it is possible to wrap D3D9Ex on Windows XP via WineD3D Direct3D to OpenGL wrapper. (special thanks to WineHQ/Crossover) Then we need to disable blacklist and disable sandbox in launch options." https://stackoverflow.com/questions/15073593/does-chrome-support-gpu-hardware-acceleration-for-the-2d-canvas-under-windows-xp2 points

I tested the most recent Chrome XP API Adapter on my system with Pentium 4 single-core and NVIDIA 6200. Generally, this adapter is great as it offers the possibility to enable hardware acceleration. Although the hardware acceleration can be switched on, there are negative side-effects. All popups now have a black background, which then appears as a black frame. Apart from that, the GPU rasterisation does not really work and leads to permanent delays. Furthermore, some of my toolbar icons that belong to extensions disappear. Thus, I had to switch off GPU rasterisation. Contrary to these problems in Thorium, the hardware acceleration in Mypal 68 and New Moon 28 works great without any problems. That means hardware acceleration is generally possible on my system and can be used if this feature is supported by a browser, especially with hardware as old as mine.2 points

Inability of this browser to properly play such common format as AV1, which is literally everywhere now, is indeed on-topic, so don't be shy to post your issues. I just checked the link, it also froze on me, so we both have the same issue on the same series of 700 nVidia cards, despite being on different OS.2 points

No. What is seen near the end is a recreation of the Windows Basic theme using the DWMWindow class and custom metrics from AWM, just like a regular DWM frame would. On another note, AWM is now out on GitHub: https://github.com/Dulappy/aero-window-manager. Here's a new showcase video as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEIpzzRSbeo1 point

It's always advisable to disconnect any LAN cables, remove WiFi card from laptop physically, or put up a copper screen (shield) above and around it, to block the signal when you install any Windows.1 point

TBH, all this benchmark stuff doesn't help me at all. I play a certain YouTube video on the browsers and know immediately whether hardware acceleration is being used or not. The problem with Thorium, however, is that part of the hardware acceleration (GPU rasterisation) is not running properly on my hardware. Your benchmark images don't help me at all. And comparing different browsers with each other makes no sense either. You have probably not configured Mypal 68 correctly via about:config. Switching on hardware acceleration in the options page of Mypal 68 is not enough, at least in my installation.1 point

Sorry, I don't have a github account. Voltage spikes, when starting the browser or trying to play a video, on my GPU happen with both of those dlls.1 point

Vista x86 WITHOUT SP1 or SP2, yes, using D3D9 HW acceleration-mode because in Vista WITHOUT SP1 or SP2, DX11 wasn't implemented yet, so the behaviour is rather similar to XP. Driver version 347.26 (iCafe). Nvidia Titan 6gb (Jan. 2013). Probably make use of the Vista's native DX10, then?1 point

Without hardware acceleration, the Thorium browser is nearly unusable on my weak hardware. Websites take ages to load completely, and videos cannot be played at all.1 point

My GPU goes into full rampage mode. That said, it's not normal, even if we all understand it was made in January 2013, it can still play games up to 2018. Load shows as 100%. Temps would be like I was playing a demanding game.1 point

Oh wow! Interesting result on multi gazillions core CPU. I only use a 2013 dual core Pentium on that PC with the internet. Both cores frequent to the max with literally everything with this browser. Pentium G3470.1 point

And then you ask me why I disable all acceleration on my Titan (from the same 7 series)! I even have much worse result, it spikes to the max all the time. GTX770 is a re-branded GTX680, which would be 12-13 years now (or more). Probably try older drivers? People reported somewhat decent results with 347.26 or 355.xx (iCafe).1 point

A long time ago, I noticed a bug in uBlock, when you spoof your UA to some odd ones (like Firefox on iOS), it behaves oddly, not updating lists, etc. Try with the default UA.1 point

I have noticed that the more recent versions of uBlock Origin, especially the version 1.58 and the development builds 1.58.x, do not work properly in Thorium. Thus, I went back to the version 1.49.2 as it seems to work as usual. All in the legacy SSE2 Win XP release of Thorium. Did anyone also observe problems with recent versions of uBlock Origin in Thorium?1 point
-
TBH, I asked you whether syncing in Thorium works although it is a Chromium browser. Actually, it shouldn't work as Google is supposed to not allow this anymore. So, my question was totally on topic.1 point

Although off-topic, you are right regarding Chrome on Android. But the original Chrome browser is totally crappy. You are bombarded with advertising rubbish. I never use this browser under Android. You should rather use the Chrome based variant Kiwi which supports extensions. I have installed uBlock Origin there, and it works fine. Bye, bye ads!1 point

What trends? I think there are no real trends. Many here are quite volatile, rather wavering. Spoken for me only, I will continue to observe the development of Thorium. It runs quite well on my old box except for media playback. But New Moon 28 remains my main browser there and finally again Mypal 68 in version 68.14.2b, which runs really well now. And on the subject of dying, personally, I am a genuine Windows XP die-hard fan. I'll probably always be one, come what may.1 point
