yes, i would agree, after a ton of experimenting and frustration, i finally went back and installed windows 2000 again ( 3rd time ), although the laptop trolled me this time and for some reason, it wouldn't successfully install the unofficial update roll up, despite it working last time i experimented with it, however, the sound driver worked this time, although i installed using in the setup way, rather than just pointing the device to the inf folder from device manager, strange but at least all the hardware works now, the sound working this time could have to do with maybe formatting / wiping the hard drive properly before re-install, because the 2nd time i installed, it seems that i didn't start fresh like i should have. the unofficial update rollup probably didn't work because i might have skipped something and / or didn't restart the system when i was supposed to, basically messing everything up in between.

Hi all, I find out, WHY there is no nvme before win7 with the driver nvme.sys from openfabrics. It is because of missed function(s) in storport.sys from win2003. Interesting: When you change storport.sys in win7 against the storport.sys from win 2003 ON NEXT BOOT the nvme harddisk is gone. But this storport.sys from win2003 fullfills all dependencies and exakt the same dependencies as original storport.sys from win7. I think this means: All drivers, that work before in XP using storport.sys from win 2003, also work now in win7. But not vice versa, have a nice day Dietmar

Looks like GIMP has dropped support for Windows Vista as of version 2.10.0 (stable; 2.9 dev) I tried running the installer, and received this message: I then tried downloading the portable version of the software from here to see if it would run, and I received the following error when attempting to run it: As you can see, the software fails to load due to a missing function in KERNEL32.dll: SetThreadErrorMode, which is a Windows 7+ function. As GIMP is open source software, this little restriction could probably easily be uplifted to allow the software to run in Vista, as SetThreadErrorMode is a minor function and I recall @smeezekitty creating a proxy stub DLL to stub the call to allow newer versions of Catalyst Omega to work with Vista, back when he was active on here. However, doing that is far beyond my ability so it'll take someone like SK or @UCyborg to do it. I then tried installing GIMP 2.9.x on Windows Vista (this is an unstable/development release; beta to 2.10) and was greeted with the following error: As such, I have added GIMP 2.8.22 to the list as the last version for Windows Vista:

When I tried to be smarter than Microsoft when it comes to updating strategy, I ended up with Explorer that continuously leaked memory. Then I risked re-installing Windows on top of existing installation, aka. repair install, something I haven't done since XP days. Results were catastrophic back then, turned my computer into a slow turtle. Fortunately, the original problem was fixed and I haven't encountered any major problems that would involve more than re-installing/re-applying an odd program/registry tweak or two.

You could always switch to the Security Only updates... Just install the Monthly Rollup for December, avoid any January updates and then continue patching with Security Only patches. This guarantees that you keep your system safe without any Meltdown/Spectre fixes
