Microsoft used a cracked copy of Sound Forge

Microsoft used a cracked copy of Sound Forge 4.5 (cracked by Deepz0ne)

to make their WAV files in Windows XP SP0 in 2001 when it was released.

Funny how I am the only person here to ever post about this.

Even funnier how Microsoft can be caught out so easily...

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Deepz0ne

I know what you're thinking, "Oh LeveL, thats just some Urban Dictionary website,

its not true". Well, why don't you get a hold of your Windows XP CD (it must be a

non service pack disc, original 2001 release of Windows XP) and install it in Virtual

PC (Virtual PC is free) then you can navigate to the folder and do what it says in

that Urban Dictionary link above if you need proof.

Then notice how that Deepz0ne signature magically vanishes if its an SP1 or

SP2 disc... just annoying man, just annoying. What we have to bear in mind

here is, this is not "casual piracy" when Microsoft gained millions, if not billions

of dollars, through the sales of Windows XP.

Just searched the whole of MSFN for Deepz0ne and this is the only post it

appears in, strange that. I know this most probably angers people, I know

it angers me to see a company like this profiting from using pirated software,

a company that itself, continually has their flunkies spouting about how piracy

is somehow evil when all it does is popularizes their ailing software and allows

people to come up with solutions to problems that would have otherwise never

been fixed by paying users, heh, users, more like "the USED", but Sonic Foundry

to this day has never filed a lawsuit for damages regarding this blatant piracy on

Microsoft's part.

Maybe people don't consider this as "news" ? I think I read about it 4 years ago.

B)

A slight exaggeration there, since the story wasn't even published until November 19th 2004.

Thats about 2 years and 5 months ago, not 4 years ago. B)

What DO people consider as news? Britney Spears shaving her head?

Anna Nicole Smith? I think the worlds biggest software company being

caught red-handed using pirated software and gaining billions of dollars

in the process is very important.

Someone needs to kick Bill Gates's a$$ for this, don't throw custard pies

at him... what use does that do? Just kick his a$$ if you see him!

It might be old news, but that only applies to YOU if you have heard this story,

what about all the people who don't even know about this?

No one else has posted this story on MSFN and its really important.

People who don't know about this need to know it.

I can't believe this one.

You can't believe I posted it? Yawn? Its "old" news?

Or you can't believe MS used cracked software in the development

of Windows XP? Get a 2001 SP0 version of Windows XP, install it in

Virtual PC, then navigate to the folder mentioned and open any of

the nine wav files... this proves the claim. There is no "believe" or

"can't believe" about it. Its proven to be real!

I guess that specific was not bills idea.

However what was bills idea was to use a monopolistic business model to ring every last drop of money out of a concept that is well out of date..eg a operating system you have to pay for.

To do this he has fought almost every countries laws till the issue in hand no longer matters and M$ wins by default.

Or he has used dubious business practice to force competitors out of the market.

This sort of detail eg the wav files generated with cracked software, is symptomatic of m$ as a whole.

Can you see where the five year development of vista went when you look at the finished product?

Bill has left the ship now anyway, as from now on, it is a inevitable downhill slide for m$.

As far as I know the first article dealing with this is this one:

http://www.pcwelt.de/news/software/104785/index.html

dated 12.11.2004 14:10

An English similar article is here:

http://www.pcwelt.de/know-how/sicherheit/104830/index.html

A few days later Microsoft officially replied, here:

http://www.pcwelt.de/news/software/104952/index.html

dated 19.11.2004 10:15

Basically Microsoft Representative Erin Collen affirms that the reference to "deepz0ne" is due to some "metadata" in a "placeholder" not properly cleared, the official statement is here:

http://www.betanews.com/article/Microsoft_...ions/1100756076

Though it may be "news" to everyone that would reply like "Oh, I didn't know that!" it is not really "new", since it is more than two years old.

And I guess that MSFN.org has not the ambition to hold ALL information ever published on Microsoft Corporation and its (supposedly bad) behaviours.

Here:

http://www.betanews.com/article/Microsoft_...ions/1100756076

Microsoft said:

"Microsoft told BetaNews that shipping content in the released version of the tour

was developed using licensed software."

This is provably LIES. Absolutely 100% a clear cut LIE.

Because you can open those WAV files yourself and see the Deepz0ne

signature in the end of the file. I think its just funny how Microsoft can

actually deny this even after they have been caught. It would be a great

tactic if we were all THREE YEARS OLD and couldn't just point out that

they are obviously lying.

They also say:

"Microsoft has copyright to use the .wav file in question and did not use a

cracked version of this software in development of the tour in Windows XP."

Outright lies again and a classic diversion. What does "Microsoft having the

copyright to use the .wav file in question" have to do with the fact that they

are using cracked software? I agree, they do have the copyright to

the audio files because they created them, but they certainly don't have the

right to use illegally cracked software such as Sonic Foundry Sound Forge.

Plus, it isn't a ".wav file in question" it is actually NINE .wav files so it is

provable nine times over. Microsoft have been caught...

1 - Using cracked software.

2 - Spinning the story.

3 - Lying about it.

4 - Downplaying the facts, claiming "one .wav file" when it is nine .wav files.

Its old news.

Its no big deal.

Its Microsoft. Nobody cares :P

"What DO people consider as news? Britney Spears shaving her head?

Anna Nicole Smith? I think the worlds biggest software company being

caught red-handed using pirated software and gaining billions of dollars

in the process is very important."

Yes. Britney Spears shaving her head is news, since she and no celeb had ever done anything like that before. Anna Nicole Smith is news because you just can't duplicate her case, its so complicated- its never happened before either. Microsoft- leaks, lawsuits, controversies, lawyers. Yawn. We're too used to it now.
