Aaron Posted October 11, 2003 Author Posted October 11, 2003 If you did them in alphabetical order it would all start with Q anyway... Windows Explorer will sort the list for you when you view the hotfixes by name.
MaLi Posted October 11, 2003 Posted October 11, 2003 I also noticed 2 patches for DirectX based on MS Security Bulletin MS03-030Both are referenced in article q819696.I will use the one with the latest version.Any thoughts?mzwarg"V2.0 (August 20, 2003): Updated to include details of an additional patch for versions of DirectX. V2.1 (August 20, 2003): Added clarification regarding additional patch in Technical description section. "Check the creation date for the latest one... would be the one with the highest revision number. But, don't bother with the patch...If you're making a new CD just getDX 9.0b./Magnus
Marztabator Posted October 11, 2003 Posted October 11, 2003 If you did them in alphabetical order it would all start with Q anyway... Windows Explorer will sort the list for you when you view the hotfixes by name.Oh dear.... looks like we're both getting confused with each other on describing this situation. I'd better explain it a bit better - here's how my svcpack folder is currently laid out, listed in alphabetical order after renaming them.js56nen.exeKB329441.exeKB821557.exeKB823559.exeKB824105.exeKB824146.exeQ323255.exeQ328310.exeQ329048.exeQ329115.exeQ329170.exeQ329390.exeQ329834.exeq330994.exeQ810565.exeQ810577.exeQ810833.exeQ811493.exeQ811630.exeQ814033.exeQ815021.exeQ816093.exeQ817287.EXEQ817606.exeQ819696.exeq828750.exeqchain.exeBut here's how it was laid out when they all had their original names:js56nen.exeMSJavWU_8073687b82d41db93f4c2a04af2b34d.exeQ323255_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeQ328310_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeQ329048_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeQ329115_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeQ329170_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeQ329390_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeQ329834_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeq330994.exeQ810565_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeQ810577_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeQ810833_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeQ811493_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeQ811630_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeQ814033_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeQ815021_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeQ817287.EXEQ817606_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeQ819696_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exeq828750.exeWindowsXP-KB329441-x86-ENU.exeWindowsXP-KB821557-x86-ENU.exeWindowsXP-KB823559-x86-ENU.exeWindowsXP-KB824105-x86-ENU.exeWindowsXP-KB824146-x86-ENU.exeAs you can see, the KB ones, without renaming, were officially last on the list. I'm pretty sure someone on this thread once said that it was recommended to install Qs first, then KBs. I'm not sure where MS get their six-figure numbers from, but all these various Qs and KBs could've been released in between each other, making noting the date/order of release for each one very confusing.I do apologise if I seem to be making a mountain out of a mole hill, but I'm just a bit jumpy about not doing something exactly right.
DaveXP Posted October 11, 2003 Posted October 11, 2003 In the Unattended Guide for the Hotfixes it says add them to the .inf file and so on. That works fine but it does not display them in Add/Remove Programs. Why is this?
Aaron Posted October 11, 2003 Author Posted October 11, 2003 Don't use the /n switch if you want backups and entries in add/remove.As always, using qfecheck is the best tool to verify the installation of hotfixes, not Add/Remove.
DaveXP Posted October 11, 2003 Posted October 11, 2003 Thanks AaronXP just needed to know why they are not there.
Marztabator Posted October 11, 2003 Posted October 11, 2003 Don't use the /n switch if you want backups and entries in add/remove.As always, using qfecheck is the best tool to verify the installation of hotfixes, not Add/Remove.Shouldn't that be "Don't use the /n switch if you don't want backups and entries in add/remove."?
DaveXP Posted October 11, 2003 Posted October 11, 2003 no because i have used the /n switch and it dont make a back up.
MaLi Posted October 11, 2003 Posted October 11, 2003 Using Gosh's guide to reduce the size of the install as well as having several options... my DOSNET.INF file is now gone. Can I simply copy one from an old XP-cd, or have I lost that featureby making an anorectic XP ?Thanks,Magnus
gosh Posted October 11, 2003 Posted October 11, 2003 If you use my method you can skip the step updating dosnet.inf. Dosnet.inf is just used to copy files before setup starts. Since you already have the files copied, you don't need dosnet.inf.-gosh
Marztabator Posted October 11, 2003 Posted October 11, 2003 no because i have used the /n switch and it dont make a back up.But I thought Aaron told someone recently that to prevent the hotfixes from being added to the Add/Remove list you should leave out the /n switch???
DaveXP Posted October 11, 2003 Posted October 11, 2003 thats what he sayed you put:"Don't use the /n switch if you don't want backups and entries in add/remove."?
Marztabator Posted October 11, 2003 Posted October 11, 2003 Did he mean "entries" by something else then? I'm thinking that not using the /n switch would result in a less cluttered A/R list.
DaveXP Posted October 11, 2003 Posted October 11, 2003 Did he mean "entries" by something else then? I'm thinking that not using the /n switch would result in a less cluttered A/R list.thats correct
Aaron Posted October 11, 2003 Author Posted October 11, 2003 wow, everyone's confused. Not using the /n switch means backups of original files are stored on the hard disk, and hotfix entries will show in Add/RemoveUsing the /n switch stops backups being made, so you cannot uninstall the hotfixes at a later date, also the reason for Add/Remove not showing any of these hotfix entries. Some of the updates using /Q:A /R:N will appear in Add/Remove regardless. Hope that clears it up.
