Laptop battery not charging

Featured Replies

hey all, hmmm im wondering if anyone could help me, my laptop battery isnt charging, the only way i can use my laptop is if I have it plugged into the mains which is quite annoying seen as its a laptop and I want to use it outside of the house, im not sure whats wrong the charging light comes on and flashes but does not charge.

i've had this problem. ur battery is dead... it just happend over time, it wont hold its charge anymore. so i would recommend getting a new battery but those can cost alot of money.

Don't go for cheap knockoff's or anything like that.... trust me <_<

From what I heard it was a voltage spike the led to his laptop.

What is the lifetime of a standard battery? Is there something I can do to make it longer, let's say, as turning the laptop off at night?

There is no way to know the lifetime of a battery, different types of battery have different behaviours, a Ni-cd one has an expectancy of 250 to 500 charging cycles, but has a "heavy" memory effect, more recent Ni-Mh and Li-Ion batteries have reduced this to a minimum, and the number of cycles has increased to 400 to 800, but still some small "tricks" can be applied, though there is no actual prove i.e. "scientifical" comparison tests, even because two batteries from the same manufacturer can behave differently.

P.S.: DIY jobs can be done, though NOT recommended, unless you have good skills:

expecially with Li-Ion batteries, it can be DANGEROUS

NiCd and NiMH should be (almost) fully discharged before charging for maximum life.

Lion batteries are supposed to be kept at nearly full capacity to prolong their lifespan, and charged often.

So, the proper treatment depends what type of batteries it uses.
