Spooky Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 (edited) does it even work in Vista? Edited October 1, 2006 by Spooky
ripken204 Posted October 1, 2006 Author Posted October 1, 2006 thats what im trying to find out... after some further research im not even sure if vista will ever support it.
gdogg Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 (edited) I see no problem, it makin everythng before vista incompatible.microsoft already wants to make it dx 10 only in vista.if it means getting rid of win 3.x- 9.x and nt5-5.1 security holes. Edited October 1, 2006 by gdogg
ripken204 Posted October 1, 2006 Author Posted October 1, 2006 but what if i want to connect another comp directly to my comp...
gdogg Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 (edited) ftp program would work greatsetup an ftp serverprobbally the fastest way to send via a network anyway.IPX was mainly used in older games, to play networked in dos times.their is always the tcp option, and internet play. ddebacker Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 Heard about TCP/IP, the de facto standard today (which was already more than common 10 years ago) ?
gdogg Posted October 1, 2006 Posted October 1, 2006 (edited) imagine the fun that will come with tcp/ip vers 6I noticed it can be setup manually just like tcp/ip vers 4 , in vista I might have to see what I can trick my inet into allowing me to do lol Edited October 1, 2006 by gdogg
ripken204 Posted October 1, 2006 Author Posted October 1, 2006 well i mainly use ipx for games when friends come over. also i need it for hamachi...
CoffeeFiend Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 As others already said, I don't see why you don't use good old TCP/IP. I haven't used IPX/SPX in the last 10 years or so.Direct PC to PC communication worked just fine with TCP/IP out of the box, even in the Win95 days.Games wise, I doubt many games require such an outdated protocol (not that I follow games, but requiring that nowadays would be blatant stupidity at best) - unless you're playing some very old stuff (Commander Keen over IPX anyone? )Hamachi doesn't require IPX/SPX either. It'll support/tunnel it, but it doesn't need it whatsoever.Even Novell NetWare (the ONLY reason why I could see someone want to use IPX for nowadays -- not that I'd use NetWare) got TCP/IP support (as primary/prefferred protocol, I mean) with v5, almost 10 years ago...Using IPX nowadays is like using Token Ring instead of Ethernet. Both were great technologies in their day (I very much liked NetWare 3.12 back then), but much water has flown under the bridge since then. I'm looking forward to IPv6 some day (adoption has been VERY SLOW to say the least, mainly because of NAT)
epic Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 (edited) I thought the drivers were on the image... otherwise try installing them from system32/drivers. Though, as crahak said, just buy a cheap hub and network your pc's. Edited October 2, 2006 by epic
