Right now I am using Diskeeper Lite Version 7.0.418.OL to defragment my hard disk in my PC that runs Win98SE.

I am quite happy with it, but in the middle of the defragmenting process, i.e., around 40-50%, it can be very slow, the system seems to be idle, no disk access activities for quite a while. Does someone has the similar experience?

Can anyone recommend a better, more efficient and faster defragmenter for Win98SE?

Well the best (although not sure if it's the fastest) defragmenter for Win9x platform would the SpeedDisk utility which is a part of Norton Utilities. It is very configurable, and I mean VERY. A real power user tool. (Although, make sure you know what you are doing before tinkering with certain settings)

The Win9x version of SpeedDisk hasn't been updated since the release of 2003 version of Norton Utilities suite for obvious reasons. Although, I didn't notice any difference between the 2003 and 2000 versions of SpeedDisk, aside from version numbers. Nevertheless I would recommend the 2003 version as it probably adds support for large hard drives and probably has some bug fixes as well.

Well yes it sort of "hangs" at 40/50% but when you consider it defragments a moderately fragmented 20 GB system partition with 10 GB of data on it in just 15/20 minutes while you carry on working as normal with your system without any need to reboot to defragment in safe mode, etc...

Just remain happy with that. Whatever else you're going to install will cost you both money and time and will certainly offer you only a marginal improvement over what you already have won with Diskeeper Lite over the built-in Windows tool.

Now if you've got time and money to spend for that, you can head to the software section of this forum and have a look a the "Which is the best defragmenter" stickie.

Yeah,,,,,the best defrag for 98 or 98/SE is the one from Windows ME.

It's like ten times faster than the old 98 Defrag.

I've eMail'd it to friends all over the world.

I've used it myself when I still ran 98/SE here and I share it with all my customers who still use 98.

One trick you're probably not using is....

Turn OFF all running programs before you ever try to use Scandisk or Defrag.

Or just run it from Safe Mode.

There's a nice little program called "End It All" that will do that for you....shuts down all running programs. You can select exactly which ones to shut down.

You can download these Utilities and many more from This Webpage

Good Luck,

Give VOPT a try, I've used it for years with never a problem, just dont try the stock defrag anymore.......

unless you reboot AFTER using VOPT, the 98 defrag will lock-up, so avoid it, my drive defrags in 10 seconds, look

I didnt even close anything !!

It's awesome
