Problem reinsatlling Windows 98SE

Featured Replies

I have a computer that was given to me by a friend. It had Windows XP Professional on it. When I tried to update it said it wasn't a registered copy or it belonged to an network or something like that. That part doesn't matter.

I reformatted the computer and wanted to installed my copy of Windows 98SE. (I have another computer that has Windows Xp Home on it). It goes through the motions of formatting and then I start to load windows 98SE and just when I think everything is going Ok. Poop, a warning comes up saying " General Protection Fault in module User.exe at 0018:09BE. What the @#@ does that mean?

I google it, but still not sure what to do.

Computer facts are:

Mobile AMD Duron 4, 1200 MHz (12X100)

224 MB (PC3200 DDR SDRAM)

ST340014A ( 40 GB, 7200 RPM, Ultra-ATA?100)

well I restarted the computer and right at the start when it was going through checking for things in the computer the screen showed this.

Pri Master Hard Drive S.M.A.R.T. status BAD, Backup and Save

I guess that means that the hard drive is fried. :(

Well I'm off to buy a new hard drive

Try clear Cmos jumper on the board

Load turbo defaults THEN !!! IF YOUR RAM HAS TURBO SETTINGS TURN IT OFF TO NORMAL !!

It seems some MOBO's wont enable Hard Drive 32bit Access unless you load turbo defaults first

Then go into the bios and make sure you have these

USB IRQ YES

VGA IRQ YES

PNP OS YES

if you have AGP

Initial Display AGP

Fast write ON

acpi ON

APM ON

Modem IRQ NONE unless you have one

Hope that helps
