Nevermind, found the error, not in nLite nLite rawks

EDIT: Nope, I was wrong, still have that problem. Updates from Windows Update gets downloaded OK, can install them from the WU -tempfolder, but WU can't install them. Just gives me 0x80240020 error in the log file :/

What have I removed that could give this kind of problem? Compability with WU was selected in the installation, well, not this Last Session.ini, but the two CDs I made before that, and they had the same problem

Sorry, I was wrong, what I thought was the solution wasn't it :/ So I still have this problem. Just tried with a non nLited installation in VPC and everything works ok.

And so does my "old" nLite-version made with 0.998, but not the new one made with 0.999.

Reuploading the Last Session.ini once more, but the WindowsUpdate-log is gone, removed it :/

Error code was 0x80240020 btw.

EDIT: Have played around some more, has nothing to do with 0.999 (made a new one with 0.998, removed much here too, same result), it's just me that have removed something that breaks the installation of updates from WU. Now, to find out what

Fixed! By not removing COM+, DTC and SENS, I can once more get the updates installed. Don't know exactly which one of those that did it though.

Didn't work for me either.

It seems I'm removing something else, that Update needs to complete the installation. This is the *only* thing that's keeping me from doing my reinstall of all my computers right now.

Oh well, if anyone has an idea what component is causing the trouble, please let me know.

You were partially correct. It needs all those 3, but it also needs the Event Logger. As I sit here I can (of course) not remember the exact name, but it's something like "Event Logger" or "System Event and Performance Log". Well, something to that effect. Shouldn't be hard to find.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread but I might have some help, or not.

I had the same problem, updates would download and verify but not install and decided to try and find the missing pieces the hard way. Trial and error that is.

18 installs later, using Windows XP Home sp2 (eng), I can confirm that the missing component is Operating System Options/Logon Notifications. That one must be kept.

However, I also found out that I don't actually need either COM+ or DTC. SENS alone will do.

Sure the SENS service can't run without those two but Windows Update doesn't need the service, only the files it uses.

This might be particular to Home only though, using the x64 Pro trial Automatic Updates and BITS depended on the COM+ service.

Hopefully this will help someone else as well.

Now, to try and find what I need to keep to get my Creative Gameport working.

you must enable the cryptographic servce (active it + set on automatic) because windows needs it to apply patches and you must also have Mapi Service and Tools still on your system

I can confirm that the missing component is Operating System Options/Logon Notifications

I have also confirmed this using the latest nLite (1.2RC) and Windows 2003. So maybe this should be added to the compatibility options of "Windows Update" in the next version.
