Windows Icon Restore Program

Hi all,

When time permits add this niffty little util that corrects the Icon Layout problem we sometimes encounter. Occasionally windows will lose the Icon layouts and I found out about this web site that has Helped me a Lot.

This little program is a great tool for any Windows 98se and above. It is called Icon-restore. I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this before so I apologize if I'm repeating anyone. By right-clicking your Trash Can, My Computer, etc you can select | Save Icon Layout | Restore Icon Layout after installing this very small program.

yup, though in TweakUI it's called the 'Rebuild Icons' option from the Repair tab of TweakUI. I would delete the ShellIconCache file from the Windows folder (this file is a hidden file so you'll need to adjust the Windows Explorer Folder Option settings to display hidden and system files), then run TweakUI, click on Repair tab, select the Rebuild Icons option and click on the Repair Now button to fix the desktop icons.

I noticed that after running the TweakUI utility to fix the icons, my TrashCan icon has changed from the nice 256 color one back to the original Windows 98se one. Is there a way to get the nice updated icons back without reinstalling the SP1?

I think I remember seeing this before that is why I went with the Icon Retore program. Much easier to fix the layout issue.

Right click the desktop and you can browse for new icons under Appearance.

Here's another icon restore utility.

It's called "Desktop Icon Position Saver" or DIPS for short.

It allows you to save and restore your desktop icon positions.

I believe it can also be run from the command line or in a batch file to automate saving and/or restoring icon positions.

It's kinda old but it's really tiny and it works well.

BTW, FixitMad, in your link to "Icon Restore" you fixed the URL in the text that displays but you never fixed the actual hyperlink itself. It still points to the URL without the final 'L' and gives an error page.

I'm using Icon-Restore and I'm very happy with it. It's much easier than with tweak UI.

I'm also using Refresh 'Em for the icon cache.

I'm glad people are using the Icon Restore program. It IS very easy to use and a life safer (Well maybe not a lifesaver but at least Very useful) . I tend to keep my most use Icons on my desktop so this program is very good!

I recommend Microsoft's "layout.zip". You can find it for example here:

Copy the DLL to windows\system, then right-click the .reg file

and select "Merge". The desktop icon layout can then be saved/restored

by a right-click on any system desktop icon (recycle bin, my computer, ...)

It's very small, and it saves the icons' position to the registry

(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\IconLayout)

so a separate backup can easily be done.
