i would pick mostly the same than Astalavista but...

775 socket, Asus always

8 USB (be sure 2.0) - 2 Firewire Ports would be enough

(2) Maxtor SATA 160 GB (be sure of raid)

PCI Express 128/256MB Video Card - ATI always for me

1 GB DDR2 memory ( i think he wants to mean Geil. others can be Corsair or Kingston HyperX )

16 Dual Layer DVD Writer ( NEC is really cheap and works great for me )

CD Writer not necessary

450 Watt Power Supply ( levicom is a good brand, but any other with quiet technology would be great )

Audigy 2 Platinum or similar sound card

that's all i think :)

As far as a decent guide check this one out TCW's Guide to Computer Building

As far as building your own system. It all depends on your needs. If you are an ultimate gamer with an unlimited budget then build the system that Astalavista suggests. Since you are on a budget I will make a few suggestions.

1. Do not go with an economy motherboard you will regret it when you are looking for support.

2. The same thing goes with a graphics card. Spend the money

If you want a really good site for everything then use Newegg.com If you don't mind waiting on stuff and you don'tcare if the company you buy stuff from may not be in business next month then just use Pricewatch.com

Hope this help and good luck :thumbup

I buy most of my equipment from Dell and www.buy.com

Dell really slams prices. Can u imagine my 19' LCD Viewsonic VP912B

was only 509 Shipped to Chicago.

You can find really good deals from dell.

When buying equipment. you should check out Techbargains.com

before you buy anything. Weekends is a good time to buy.

Compusa and MicroCenter is a really good place to also find deals

check your local Newspaper.

He didn't state a budget. So I recommended what i thought was the best

is. It is up to him to be savy in purchasing the hardware. If you know

what you are doing, you can get a really good deal and save mega bucks.

Id say everything but the powersupply looks like it is quality.

here is a breakdown of the prices:

motherboard: $161

CPU: $186

Case: $50

Ram: $220

--------------

Total: $617

Total w/ guess for shipping: $660

So basically what it comes down to is that ur paying $140 for a cheap PSU.

Id say ur better off buying it from different places on the net and just putting it together urself, and spend the $140 on a good power supply, and the hdd and cd drive and videocard that you would need for a complete build.

Also, i suggest you buy some Arctic Silver 5 and use that instead of the crap that comes with the intel cpu's.

If you're going to get a good motherboard, go with Asus... I don't know of any good motherboard that comes with a processor... You almost always have to buy the processor seperately...

Also, as a case, I would go with a nice Antec one! :D
