UCyborg Posted October 27, 2024 Author Posted October 27, 2024 (edited) It looks like your typical Firefox isn't even truly portable these days, even when you supposedly get "portable" version. Well, Windows sucks as it is and writes forensic evidence to registry that you've run something, but so called "portable" Firefox writes its own trace as well! Just check HKCU\Software\Mozilla... Back in the day, portable also meant no purposefully written traces outside its own folder. Regarding telemetry, guess those Japanese merely claim they didn't add their own telemetry, Mozilla still does it instead. Edited October 27, 2024 by UCyborg Rewording

Because I log the scores in a spreadsheet. I'd have to rerun over three hundred different browsers/versions if I started using the newer Speedometer.

Agreed! I haven't converted IceCat to portable yet. May eventually. Then try in a clean VM. From what I am seeing, IceCat may be the only alternative for the privacy-aware end-user! Floorp basically did the same thing SRWare Iron did - made claims that nobody fact-checked them on! Marketing Department GENIUSES.

I suspect these 16 21 require some in-depth hacking like we did with 360Chrome. Problem is, though, ONCE YOU PERFORM THAT FIRST LAUNCH, the telemetry damage is already done! (I would have disabled network entirely but I was inside a VM, so I let it do it's "defaults"). about:networking for IceCat - about:networking for Floorp - about:networking for Official Pale Moon - Pale Moon has less connections (and presumably IC that I don't know about) because it doesn't have the Anti-phishing/Malware protection of Google Safe Browsing, doesn't have the internal anti-trackers protection,Total Cookie Protection,Supercookie Protection....... But even these security connections can be removed, although I don't see the point. Some userscripts (Arkenfox......Betterfox) allow you to do this as well. Edited October 27, 2024 by Sampei.Nihira

Ha, this isn't worth bothering unless you have at least 16 GB of RAM and probably SSD disk as well.
UCyborg Posted October 30, 2024 Author Posted October 30, 2024 So I'd need a new computer to build Floorp from source, but with new computer I wouldn't need to build it from source because provided binaries' system requirements would already be satisfied! The irony...
Sampei.Nihira Posted November 1, 2024 Posted November 1, 2024 In Firefox 132 only in Enhanced Tracking Protection - “Strict” third-party cookies are blocked. In ETP - “Standard” they are allowed. Users are only informed in both “Strict” and “Standard” that cross site cookies are blocked. Only a test allows to verify this difference: https://www.whatismybrowser.com/detect/are-third-party-cookies-enabled/

legacyfan Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 (edited) midori browser is also an option for those who would rather have less telemetry https://astian.org/midori-browser/ (known telemetry use at your own risk) Edited November 3, 2024 by legacyfan

But sure, it's an improvement to most Firefox/Mozilla Forks. I would stick with IceCat *if* I was forced to use a Mozilla Fork. Thankfully, I'm not forced to use them. To each their own, of course. And the so-called "portable" version added an entry to my start menu, entries to my registry, and what appears to be a UNIQUE ID FOLDER inside ProgramData. Which is why I only try inside a fresh/clean VM. I can now delete this VM as its cleanliness has been compromised. Edited November 3, 2024 by NotHereToPlayGames 1

NotHereToPlayGames Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 And don't forget the about:networking link (somebody posted that in this thread, forget who, that's a new and very useful tool to keep in your quiver). 1
legacyfan Posted November 3, 2024 Posted November 3, 2024 (edited) just tried out installing waterfox just now and so far dnssniffer has found no dns related browser connections with telemetry Ive also done the task scheduler and regedit telemetry disable tricks and completely stopped the customer experience program service Edited November 3, 2024 by legacyfan

Suggested by me. Image with Firefox, there are 8 active connections right now. For example detectportal is off (0) and will always remain off. Other connections present at other times, are fully functional: Firefox will always be the safest browser compared to all other forks because it will always be the first firefox-based browser that patches bugs 0-day.
NotHereToPlayGames Posted November 4, 2024 Posted November 4, 2024 I could not get Waterfox to launch. I could get Waterfox Classic to launch and I'm NOT liking what I see there. Regarding 0-day - DOES NOT CONCERN ME! "Hype and Propaganda" in my book. Blacklisting javascript and only whitelisting on a dozen cites you visit regularly TYPICALLY IS ENOUGH TO PREVENT ANY-AND-ALL ZERO-DAY BS!
