Tea drinkers, meet here!

Researchers find DNA traces of 400 insects in tea bags - consumers could help science

Just like in a detective story: researchers at the University of Trier examine tea bags for DNA traces. Their findings provide clues to species extinction - and could make tea drinkers important informants.

Trier - "We examined commercially available teas and herbs and found DNA from up to 400 different insect species in a single tea bag," says Henrik krehenwinkel, junior professor of biogeography from Trier. In his study, he and his team made important investigations into insect mortality and biodiversity.

Which bee pollinated the flower? Which beetle crawled over the flower stalk, which louse ate its way through a leaf? Researchers can make all this visible in the laboratory.

Insect DNA in tea bags: Here's what science can read from it
The groundbreaking novelty of the scientific method: Because UV rays or rain normally cause the DNA traces to disappear, research on this is otherwise difficult.

By having the leaves in the tea in a dried state, it is now possible to see what traces the insects leave behind inside a plant, he said. "Now we can also detect which insects live inside the plant," says Henrik Krehenwinkel, describing the new horizon of knowledge.

Insect DNA in tea bags: Could consumers become important informants for science?
What the researchers are now particularly interested in: Are certain insect species disappearing along with certain plant species? The method would provide particularly good evidence of the interrelationships between plants and animals.
A look into the future for consumers and tea lovers: "We are currently working on simplifying the protocol of our method so that school classes can work with it," says Krehenwinkel. "In the long term, this could turn into a citizen science project in which citizens as well as individuals conduct research in the field of biodiversity."

And what already sounds like a detective story could actually still have a use for forensic science: The technique of detecting DNA traces in dried plants could be of interest to customs officials, for example, when importing protected plant species, or when finding drugs. According to Stiftung Warentest, green teas are often contaminated with harmful substances. (kat)

Solitary whales and dolphins could be becoming more common

By James Ashworth

solitary-cetaceans-full-width.jpg.thumb.

Increasing numbers of whales and dolphins appear to be taking up solitary lives around the world.

Scientists and conservationists are continuing to investigate why this is happening, with the exact reasons remaining unclear.

Members of the public are being warned to keep their distance from lone whales and dolphins that take up residence along the coast.

Known as solitary sociable cetaceans (SSCs), these animals inhabit localised areas and have limited interactions with their own species, instead turning their attentions to humans. Bottlenose dolphins are the most common SSCs, but other species including beluga whales have also been known to take up residence in areas of human activity.

While these individuals may socialise with humans, they remain wild animals, and attempts to interact with them are dangerous to the cetaceans as well as ourselves.

Liz Sandeman is the co-founder of the charity Marine Connection, and has monitored SSCs for over 25 years. She says, 'Watching wild whales and dolphins can be very exciting, but we have to keep our distance.'

'Not only do we risk broken bones - or worse - by getting close to them, but it can also lead to the animal itself losing its wariness around us. This puts it at a much greater risk of being injured or killed by vessels, and several individuals have been lost recently because of this.'

Anyone encountering a wild SSC is advised to keep their distance, and attempt to limit any interactions with the animal as much as possible....

Lifestyle of the dodo revealed

By James McNish

Secrets of how the extinct dodo lived have finally been uncovered.

Scientists examining the structure of the birds' bones have found new information about how quickly dodos grew, when they laid eggs and when they moulted.

Researchers from the Museum and the University of Cape Town (UCT) combined evidence from the bones with the historical accounts of sailors that visited Mauritius, the birds' home.

They also used information about the lifestyle of birds that still live on Mauritius...

Cane Toads In Oz

A gigantic frog in a strange new land.

Cane Toads!!

Just hearing those words creates fear and loathing in many Australians. These feral amphibians have become a major invasive threat to biodiversity in Australia (often called "Oz" by the people who live there) since their introduction in North Queensland. Reports that these poisonous amphibians have invaded through the Northern Territory and have reached Western Australia fuel this national sense of fear and loathing. Newspaper reports of cane toads being found right across the country, and breeding as far south as Sydney, create widespread alarm...

"Bambi" is 80 years old, and his morals are more important today than ever

3426157-46.jpg

Even with less than a thousand words, a long and complicated production, a failure at the box office, and one scene that broke the hearts of countless children, Disney's classic adaptation of an anti-fascist novel by a Zionist writer became one of the most successful animated films of all time...

The story of "Bambi", the classic film of the Disney studios from 1942, which is now celebrating its 80th anniversary, is a series of contrasts.

On the one hand, it is a cute children's movie, almost plotless, most of which is dedicated to sweet little moments of Bambi and his friends frolicking in the forest.

On the other hand, "Bambi's mother" has become synonymous with childhood trauma, and the moment of her death is not the only scary scene in the film...

collected in the woods two years ago by a local quarryman-breeder, adopted by his family and who is now in danger of losing.

The agents of the Provincial Police (former gamekeeper) have in fact informed him that in September they will take him away...

He had been abandoned by his mother

- says Giovanni Del Zoppo, 58 - and I took him home, saving him. As a child I fed him with the bottle with the milk of the 70 goats raised by my daughter Sara. Then, gradually he grew up with feed, small fruits, sprouts and apples.

He is one of the family

and my granddaughters are very close to Bambi, that's what I called him. "...

Like own baby: mama monkey raises orphaned kitten

By: Ulrike Hagen

Touching mother-love: at the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, a mama monkey lovingly raises an orphaned kitten. (Symbolic image) © imago

A wild monkey lady adopts an abandoned kitten in the nature park of Ubud on Bali. Lovingly she raises it like her own baby - touching.

Ubud/Bali - There are many touching examples of unconditional, interspecies love among animals: Whether from Canada, where a female dog lovingly raises orphaned raccoon babies, or from Kenya, of the orphaned hippo that found refuge with a 100-year-old turtle. The Dalmatian who adopted a pied lamb also warmed hearts. Now, in the monkey forest on Bali, an unusual and heartbreaking sight takes hold of visitors: an abandoned kitten found shelter and refuge there with: a mama monkey!

Nature Park: Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary (Monkey Forest of Ubud)
Province: Bali
Monkeys housed: 1050
Size: 12 hectares
Visitors/year: 10,000

Touching monkey love: macaque mom adopts orphaned kitten

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, also known as the Monkey Forest of Ubud, is located in central Bali, Indonesia. The sanctuary is home to 1,049 Balinese long-tailed monkeys in their natural habitat. Balinese long-tailed monkeys, also known as crab-eating macaques, are smart, active and friendly animals that attract many visitors to the reserve every day. They live in social groups and have strong family ties.

A monkey and a little kitten
Female monkey raising kitten becomes attraction at Sacred Monkey Forest
Because of their strong social streak, it's not uncommon for monkeys to even help raise offspring that aren't their own. Every month, about 10,000 people visit Sacred Monkey Forest to see these adorable monkeys. And in the midst of them is now a little spotted kitten who is being petted and cuddled by "her" monkey mom - because she is adopting the little creature as if it were her own child.

Wild monkey mom adopts kitten and protects it as if it were her own baby

The monkey cradles the kitten in her arms as if it were her own baby, and the mini-cat seems to adore her just as much. As befits a good mother, the "mama" carries her "baby" around the facility and supports the kitten's little bottom. She even conscientiously protects it from other monkeys that get too close. It is as heart touching as the story of a Labrador who adopted a wild pig.

Unconditional love between monkey mom and "baby": no one knows where the kitten came from
The photos of the monkey mom holding her cat in her arms are beautiful and clearly show the intimate relationship between the primate and the little velvet paw. Obviously, the two are inseparable. As heartsofpets.com reports, no one knows how the two met or how the kitten ended up in the monkey forest. But it is evident every day that the monkey is overjoyed to care for its "offspring." And the "baby" is infinitely grateful for the boundless love of its new mama.

Abandoned kitten finds a new mom - touching story with a happy ending

Best friends - or even families - just come in all shapes, sizes and even types. Like the dog who took care of little bunnies so they'd think he was their mommy, or the dog who adopted orphaned baby opossums, this story touches with a beautiful happy ending.
