Installing SP4.

I didn't have much luck installing SP4. I have to cut back on experiments and start using my computer for nornal use only and get some relief. But updates to XPSp3 would be fine, is there a lightweight solution that could be implemented just so I can continue to get updates?

Download the script, run it, download nLite (requires Net Framework), run it and add all of the files UDC downloaded.

Next, reinstall. (dammit!) You can also burn the Integrated (via nLite) DVD and use it to "upgrade", thus retaining everything currently on your HDD.

I guess I'll have to put it all on the back burner and see if I can manage that stuff later on. Grey matter may need a rest.

 

But there's one thing I'd like to know. UCD is what I used to think of as a MSDOS batch-file, to be run from the command prompt. Is that how it should be done?

I thought I should download the nLite utility but can't locate it. I wouldn't mind giving the latest SP4 version a chance, do I need nLite to install USP4 v3.1a?

No.  SP4 should behave exactly like an official MS XP SP.

 

You can install/apply it to your live XP system, (of XP SP1 or later), all by itself with nothing else required, just like any official MS SP.

 

Also, just like any official MS SP, you can integrate/slipstream SP4 to any official XP source, either by using the /integrate switch, or using RVMi (RyanVM Integrator v1.6) or nLite v1.4.9.1 or later versions of either [current direct link to nLite v1.4.9.3 with instructions], whichever way you are more comfortable with.  If you choose to integrate SP4 to your install source be sure to do that while on either XP or 2003 and not on any version of Vista or later so you don't run into this problem.  Doing an internet search for - how to sliptream XP SP - should get you many different tutorials if you need help.

So I asked in another thread, what exactly is in the SP4.  I know there's an extensive thread, but it's just too confusing to go through ...lol

 

So suppose I have Windows XP SP3 installed and all of the post-SP3 updates put in up to April 2014.  Now I go install SP4.  What changes?

(I know it puts in the POSReady 2009 hack.  Does it also install .NET Frameworks by default or can I defeat that?)

 

What else does it do to your system?

SP4 includes the POSReady and other "Request only" updates that many folks have not installed to their XP SP3 installations along with some "security enhancements that address issues not fixed by Microsoft Updates". If you take a look in the SP4 COMPONENTS_REFERENCE.PDF, which you can find in the SP4 Cloud Download location you can find here, you can see the complete list of everything that is included in SP4.

Thank you, as that was quite informative.  Now can any of those options be defeated?  So if I didn't want any PowerShell or .NET files on my system, can I prevent that from being installed?

 

A lot of great additions though.

 

EDIT:  I soooooo wish a similar Unofficial SP3 could be developed for Windows XP x64 Edition.  It really is a worthwhile OS, but I know there are no update sources still around for it.  Sniff!

In Live installation you cannot change what is installed by default. Powershell is not installed by default in Live install, neither does .NET Framework 4.0. Microsoft .NET Frameworks 1.1 and 3.5 are always installed in Live installations. In live installation, .NET Framework 1.0 SP3 is installed only if .NET Framework 1.0 for XP is previously present (Tablet PC, MCE). In MCE with SP4 installed .NET Framework 1.1 is not removable. In MCE/Tablet PC edition with SP4 installed .NET 1.0 SP3 is not removable.

 

WGA Notifications are forced to be disabled. Powershell must be removed before installing SP4. It is not installed by the package installer and must be re-enabled manually afterwards.

 

In CD-ROM installation, only .NET Framework 3.5 is installed by default. .NET Framework 1.1 is also always installed in MCE and it's not removable. .NET Framework 1.0 SP3 is always installed with Tablet PC Edition and it's not removable.

 

You can modify the default installation state by using the OC-PATCHES compressed inf files for the respective components (replace the originals in the SP4-slipstreamed media).

JodyT, I have at the moment over 260 updates and hotfixes for Windows XP SP3 in my HFSLIP folder, excluding .NET and superseded updates.

 

So yes Harkaz has done a tremendous amount of work to build the Windows XP SP4. It is not just an update but a big project.
