Server 2012 Updates on Windows 8

It appears that Windows Defender Updates may not work any longer without the Windows Update service enabled.  Tried to enable the update service, and it worked.  Turning off the service and trying to update Defender fails with an error now.

Strange, but it appears that the issue has completely resolved itself.

It seems that the latest Monthly Rollups (July and August of 2025) cannot be installed to Client or Embedded editions anymore (even with the *ahem* Bypass *ahem*)

Microsoft intentionally restricted it to work for Server 2012 only. Well it had a good run anyway,

the fact that Updates could be installed for free until Octobre 2023 was already a pleasant surprise.

Even with said Restriction  ,  im sure there's a way to install it somehow

Does anybody know if Server 2012/2012 R2 are eligible of Grandfathered ESU like 2008 SP2/2008 R2? 

I remember that somewhere it said support is stretched till 2029 but I am not quite sure. It would be nice to know which products are covered by that clause. I think it was like 3-5 years more support after the end of Extended Support, right?

 

Fun Fact:

In fact, Internet Explorer 9 and 11 are the longest-supported Browsers under Windows Vista, 7, and 8, including ESU updates. What an irony, since IE was already "officially" declared dead in 2022.

So if at least one company out there purchased Server 2012 or R2 Premium Assurance back in the day (around 2016-2018),

Microsoft should continue to provide Monthly Rollups Updates on the Microsoft Update Catalog accessible to everyone until 2029.
