EDIT: I happily stand corrected. I don't recall seeing the DR links ever posted here before.

This does raise an interesting point though. Since consumer versions of Win7 ( like Vista and XP ) are activation based, why do they not provide an archive of ISO's for honest Windows users who have legitimate licenses and keys?

You really should direct that question to Microsoft the company, the many Softies you find on websites, and all her surrogates. Ask them why consumers are stuck with all the disadvantages of activation and none of the alleged benefits.

Having dealt with this issue over and over in the real world, Activation should be instead referred to as Genuine Disadvantage.

Actually for win7 there ARE legal download links for iso's.

These have been posted here before and digital river is a legal ms redistributer.

I downloaded the current eng ver of 7 home but when I tried to create a bootable disk I end up with a coaster. I an using image burn to burn the disk. Any ideas? Thanks

One other thing I don't know what product key to use. The only valid one I have is for a 3 pack upgrade.

1 - Mode=Write and select the ISO file.

2 - Change the Write Speed to (maybe) 4x.

3a - AFAIK, the Key should work for an UPGRADE on three PC's only (activation).

3b - Don't provide a Key and get a Full Evaluation (google "slmgr" on how to extend the evaluation time).

3c - That's the most you'll get for a Key otherwise you're treading on dangerous ground.

Ty. That's what I think I did. I made custom Xp ISOs before upgrading to 7 and only have 7 on 2 machines. Could going from 32 to 64 bit count as a upgrade?

You can't upgrade x86->x64 as that is not an upgrade path. Clean Install only.

vinifera, something to keep in mind is that in order to be considered completely legal, at least in the US, where you get it from is just as important as what you get.  In other words, downloading a Win7 ISO from the above links is legal, but turning around and redistributing that exact same ISO is not.  To be legal, an approved ISO has to be obtained directly from an approved source.  An official CD/DVD with its key can be transferred from one person to another, such as on eBay, but not a burned copy of that CD/DVD.  Also if you give, or sell, such an official CD/DVD to someone else, the right to install and continue to use an OS installed from that CD/DVD transfers with the CD/DVD.  ie, you can't legally install an OS, sell or give the CD/DVD to someone else and continue to use the OS yourself.

Just so you know you need a retail key for this, not a MAK or OEM key. Its annoying that the ISO seems to be protected by sharks with freakin laserbeams on their for foreheads.
