June 25, 200917 yr I just bought another ca-42 cable, i'm not sure if this one is an original nokia or not. I've tried it on several computers and they are not detecting that a new device has been attached and there is no new devices in device manager. I've tried with and without nokia drivers and the prolific 2032 drivers, the systems I've connected to have been running xp. This is the second cable I've used and its from a totally different source but I am still having the same problem. any ideas? Am i doing something wrong or am i having bad luck with cables? The two CA-42 cables i got have blue connecters, have nokia stamped on them and sayNOKIAType: CA-42108382646201MADE INTHAILANDthis is very frustrating, and I haven't even hooked up the HDD yet.

June 25, 200917 yr They are not simple cables, I opened one up and there is definately a small circuit board with chips. i've ordered a dKU-5 cable this time, hopefully it will work. It seems like there is no sure way to know what you're getting will work. The main chip has this printed on itAtmelAT76C71258A37-3J6p0589E0642 KOREA Edited June 25, 200917 yr by MABO

June 26, 200917 yr Apparently there are different cable types with the same name: CA-42.I bought a few days ago a CA-42 cable that ultimately does not work.I bought it directly from Nokia.Features: Edited June 26, 200917 yr by Jhothagondyaz
June 26, 200917 yr Ok Guys I have Seagate brick at home as well.My problem is that I can't make the terminal talk with the HDD.This is what I did:1. Used USB-to-TTL adapter (Installed correctly on Windows XP, COM4 port, works with +5V)2. Connected red wire of USB-to-TTL (+5V) to external red wire of PSU3. Connected black wire (GND) of USB-to-TTL (+5V) to GND pin of HDD4. Connected RX of USB-to-TTL to TX pin of HDD5. Connected TX of USB-to-TTL to RX pin of HDD6. Used direct SATA power connector to power the HDD fom the same PSU7. Isolated the motor of HDD with plastic card8. Then I run the Hyper Terminal on Windows XP PC and put settings 38400, 8 bit, None, 1 bit, None9. When I pres CTRL + Z or CTRL + z I get nothing on the terminal10. I run a new Hyper terminal with settings 9600, 8, N, 1, N11. When I pres CTRL + Z or CTRL + z I get garbage characters12 I made a loopback test of the USB-to-TTL adapter13. Test works on 9600 baud rate but doesn't work on 38400 baud rate14. I tried to swap RX and TX and then I get nothing on 38400 and 960015. Tried two different types of PSU for the power and the result is the same16. When I connect to the terminal I power on the PSU and wait 20sec and then pres CTRL + Z combination17. All my wires are working and isolatedCan you tell me what am I doing wrong?Do you think that my USB-to-TTL adapter could be the problem?Or the driver of the USB-to-TTL adapter is the problem?I should try with CA-42 cable as wellThanks!
June 26, 200917 yr I need urgent help, after I typed N1, and pressed enter, I powered On/Off like the guide said but now the terminal isnt responding! What should I do???NVM. I solved it and my Seagate is up and running! THANK YOU GRADIUS2 FOR THIS GUIDE Edited June 26, 200917 yr by Cry17

Sometimes a low voltage (about the 3V) is insufficient forthe adapter to function properly.Place the cursor on the HyperTerminal session open. What you see on screen is what is received by the serial port.If you are not ASCII characters are printed simbolos rare.Press at a time "Control" and "z".Z in lowercase. If all is well you will appear in the Hyperterminal as follows:F3 T>All commands are case sensitive.
June 28, 200917 yr Dear FriendsI have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB.One morning when I turned my PC on, It takes a long time to load Win XP and CHKDSK had a long list of errors. First I thought my HDD had bad sector problem. So I decided to format C: and see what happens, But I could'nt do that because of errors. So I lost my 1st partition. I tried to copy my files on another HDD but when I tried to copy after some files copying windows restarts! Then I tried to recover my partitions but I lost all of them.I googled my problem and found out the problem was with my firmware. I tried to get some info from Seagate but...!!!Since my HDD can be detected by BIOS on power on but when I want to access HDD for recovery for example by GetDataBack program system hangs and then HDD would'nt detected by BIOS untill another power off and on, I decided to update my firmware from SD15 to new version. I did it successfully, But the problem exists yet. Then I found here. Look, My HDD can be detected repeatedly by power cycle. So what do you think? Can I do as BSY Problem or not??And also when I check it with Victoria at first I have a normal HDD report and then when system hang and restarts I have BUSY light on!I will highly highly highly appreciate if somebody guid me.Best Regards
