herbalist Posted September 6, 2008 Posted September 6, 2008 Regarding the displaying of the first post, with 98FE and IE6, the page is much wider than the screen. With SeaMonkey 1.1.9, everything fits very nicely on the screen. Same with K-meleon 1.5.0. With SeaMonkey, all but the first codebox have both vertical and horizontal scrollbars. With IE6, only the 2nd codebox has a horizontal scrollbar. I'm guessing that it's the 3rd codebox that's making the screen so wide when such an inferior browser is used. The rest of the posts are normal in all the browsers I have.Rick
CharlotteTheHarlot Posted October 1, 2008 Author Posted October 1, 2008 Folks, I have been messing around with that first post in MSIE (version 6.0.2800.1106). I shortened up the longest lines that are in those CODEBOXes. Still looks like crap! I am on a Win9x box at the moment without MSIE7. Can anyone comment on the width using that version? One would think that this issue may have come across a computer screen up in Redmond sometime during the last 7-ish years!Unless the MSFN site software is customizeable with respect to endusers using MSIE, perhaps with targeted style sheets via some creative scripting, well, I just don't see an easy solution.Maybe endusers themselves that use MSIE can use a custom stylesheet for this site (and others with the same forum host software).I see that Opera works flawlessly here. I hear that Mozilla does also. I would hate to use a content reducing solution (i.e., limit text width within a CODEBOX) so that a POS browser does not choke on visual output. I mean, its not like this is a serious Acid Test.More suggestions please! I have more System Internals information to add to this thread but I would like to solve this issue somehow first.
RetroOS Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 Google is normally your friend, but here the Internet Archive Wayback Machine is your friend!http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.sy...als.com/Files/*and (case sensitive),http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.sy...als.com/files/*You'll find most revisions of Sysinternals tools archived here.An added bonus is the source code that is all but gone since M$ "took over management"...You can see in the list of snapshot dates when files change by an asterisk next to the date. Many revisions of the original home page can be viewed from:http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.sysinternals.comIf you've got lots of time on your hands, you can search through the entire site's files and revisions including the original web pages and forums using:http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.sysinternals.com/*Happy searching!
herbalist Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 I've found that the wayback machine doesn't always have the file versions that went with the page dates. Tried doing what you suggested with a different program. The download links were often dead or linked to a newer version than what was on the page.
CharlotteTheHarlot Posted October 9, 2008 Author Posted October 9, 2008 BUMPING THIS THREAD.Looking for MSIE 6/7/8 users to examine this page, specifically the page width on the first post (read above discussion).Need advice and if possible comment on my ideas in Post #17Also, have any users of Firefox/Mozilla/Opera/(other) noticed any page width anomolies? So far they seem immune. Thanks! CTH
Drugwash Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 (edited) With SlimBrowser (IE based, currently IE6-SP1 on Win98SE) page is too wide. Funny thing is I checked the page code when the thread was younger (not that I'd make much of HTML anyway) and reducing only codebox sizes (to 50%) didn't make any difference, so it must be something with the background layout (the whitish portion that can be seen to the right). Couldn't pinpoint the issue though so I left it alone after a few failed attempts. Edited October 9, 2008 by Drugwash

Queue Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 (edited) I grabbed the ''ExeVersion'' utility from here:http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?s=&...st&p=791707and used it on the newest version of AutoRuns and it seemed to restore functionality on Win9x. I mean, I haven't tested it thoroughly, but it starts up and lists stuff. I'm still holding on to my last official versions that work on Win9x anyway, but hot darnn, I wish I'd noticed ExeVersion sooner.Erm, obviously the OP knows of this utility, but I think it's still a viable comment.Queue Edited April 16, 2009 by Queue
Controller Khan Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I couldn't help but notice that right after MS bought Sysinternals, many of their utilities became quite a bit larger in size, with no obvious changes in the way they work or their features.Examples:Process ExplorerVersion 10.04 is 1.37MBVersion 10.21 is 3.45MBRegmonVersion 7.03 is 417KBVersion 7.04 is 600KBFilemonVersion 7.03 is 436KBVersion 7.04 is 730KBI see no real changes in any of these from the last Sysinternals versions to the MS versions, except that the "save as" option of the MS versions of Filemon and Regmon doesn't work on 98. The previous versions do. I really have to wonder just what they changed that nearly doubled their size or even more.look at the Resources BINRES, they added PE64(AMD64) drivers and exe files.you can use e.g Resource Hacker for viewing Resources.

As mentioned in the top post and more recently by Queue, there may be some hope in manually patching some of these using a tool by SteelBytes. I have not had the time lately but will endeavor to at some point.NOTE: If any mods are reading this perhaps you might comment on the ethicality of documenting here the results of patching System Internals utilities (see my concerns in the top post). I'm guessing it will be ok since other Microsoft files are commonly patched and discussed (for example UXTHEME). But it can't hurt to ask anyway. Thanks! -=[CTH]=-EDIT: found a few more versions and added them to the list. Edited May 3, 2009 by CharlotteTheHarlot

What you cannot do (Rule 1.b) is to actually redistribute the patched binaries (nor the unpatched binaries, but, for them, you can provide links to the original software provider/vendor site, if you so want).

M()zart Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 Also, have any users of Firefox/Mozilla/Opera/(other) noticed any page width anomolies? So far they seem immune.Firefox 3.5. Horizontal scrolling appears because of too large boxes. Opera works good.
