* RegMon v7.04 32-bit for Windows 9x
RegMon and FileMon are broken here. :(

I get an error message:

"FILEVXD.VXD is not loaded properly.: The system cannot find the file specified." with Filemon,

and "REGVXD.VXD is not loaded properly.: The system cannot find the file specified." with RegMon,

when launching them. :}

Same thing with an older version (6.04).

Any idea?

UPDATE TO POST #1

The top post has been re-written to describe the current ZIP package suite: 2009-12-01. (downloaded on 2009-12-18).

Win9x fans will notice no functional changes except for the fact that both FILEMON and REGMON are no longer distributed in the Suite.

Maybe this will help...?

Just an FYI to everyone concerned with the firewall alerts due to phone home boilerplate code found in the System Internals utilities circa the Microsoft acquisition (some posts here at MSFN about it in Win98 vulnerability, where Multibooter noted the behavior).

An explanation is found at System Internals in 2006 the thread Process Explorer and Internet Access, which was just before the Microsoft takeover.

In short, the phoning home occurs for two reasons that I can see ...

The utilities attempt to verify digital signatures, which can be disabled in the GUI of each app under options (which apparently only appears on WinXP and above).

Also there can be internet access initiated from the using help file, no doubt from some JavaScript in the source code of the compiled CHM.

Interestingly, the newest utility: RAMMAP.EXE requires Vista or higher. This means that both Win9x and WinXP are now victims of Microsoft's latest compilers. Wonderful. So to any WinXP users: Welcome to the Party pal!

I've found replacement (at least partially) for Process Explorer - Process Viewer for Windows (PrcView) 5.2.15.

Hummm, why do you need to replace Process Explorer? :whistle:

This Process Viewer doesn't seems better to me. :lol:

@MDGx: your link downloads version 10.02 (not 9.56). :whistle:

Sorry, I didn't saw your message. :blushing:

No, it's not my problem

...but after a few reinstall's I got them running. ;)

And why not: Autoruns 9.57

As I said in post #30,

it seems to me that all versions after 9.12 are buggy with Windows 98,

and are not giving more information.

I asked about Autoruns v. 9.57 because I had not noticed a difference in the results of performance in comparison to Autoruns v. 9.56. However, when I looked at the displayed information more carefully, I found out that some part of it is false. The Autoruns v. 9.56 or 9.57 DOES NOT FIND PATHS TO THE CERTAIN PROGRAMS wrongly claiming that files of these programs "does not exist". I also compared the results of performance of Autoruns v. 9.12 and Autoruns v. 8.73, version 9.12 displays more results (correct ones)!

So I dug into my own archives and tested each deceased version's predecessor until I successfully found older versions that run. This list is subject to change in the event that I am missing a release! Until I hear otherwise, I believe these are the last versions running on Win9x ...

- - -

Du.exe .......... 1.0 ....... 53,248 ... 02-07-05 .... 4:43p ... ok (CMD Prompt)

As far as I can tell, DU version 1.2 (40960 bytes, 2005-10-15 2:56pm) works OK.

Aside :

Reading that only 11 utilities in the current suite are OK, it seems that the current suite is becoming more and more an irrelevance. Reading about partial loss of functionality, bloat, undesirable "phone home" features and restrictive license conditions in later versions of some utilities (that otherwise still work), leads me to think that ultimately, what will be most useful, will be a list of "best version for 9X" for these utilities. (IMHO)

Joe.

The top post has been re-written to describe the current ZIP package suite dated: 2011-02-01..

Win9x fans will notice that ONE MORE utility no longer operates. The file LISTDLLS.EXE v3.0 fails on Win9x, so users would need to use v2.25 instead.
