weEvil
What firmware is currently reccomended for the WRT54G router? I'm having some networking issues and I want to see if new firmware will help. I need something that is most up-to-date or bug free. Whichever is most stable. I wouldn't mind some extra functions/performance out of my router.Worst case scenario. What happens if I mess it up. How do I re-flash a broken firmware upgrade? IcemanND
depends upon what version you have wether you can use anything other than the factory firmware on it. If you are not after different features just try the newest version from linksys and see if it solves your problems.

PC_LOAD_LETTER
Have you tried Tomato firmware?not before tonite. just installed it and it appears to be working great. i love the 'static dhcp' option -lets my laptop have the same IP regardless of wired/wireless (as long as they both arent on at the same time)
tain
im running hyperwrt on mineDitto here.i love the 'static dhcp' option...I tried to explain that to my professor back when I was taking networking courses. He thought I was kidding and said "there is no such thing as static DHCP, that doesn't even make sense!" He was correct for the most part, of course. Static DHCP isn't so much a standard as it is a feature found on a few products. But Cisco does have DHCP Static Mapping which I understand is the same idea. And as Ciso goes, the rest of the industry eventually follows with respect to features.

Tarun
No idea where you read that it's discontinued, but that's incorrect. tofu was discontinued but Tomato is going strong.Tomato will work perfectly with your router.http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato
weEvil
Cool. So what does Tomato offer compared to the rest?Basically I'm interested in enhanced security. Only allowing my computers on the network (through MAC addresses?).Do any of these firmwares allow you to block IP address ranges? Like PeerGuardian 2 does?Better wireless performance is a bonus. jcarle
Tomato, hands down. That's what I'm running on my WRT54GS. Love it so much that I'd still use it as my router even if I got myself a N-based access point.
PC_LOAD_LETTER
yeah i've been considering getting something that runs Gbit but if i dont find one that will run tomato, i dont think i can make the switch. ill prolly just get a 4-8 port Gbit switch and link it to the WRT
