RainyShadow Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Well, thanks for the report.. i needed just this part though:B01 D05 F00: ESS Technology Allegro-1.COMM AudioDrive Offset 00: 5D 12 88 19 05 00 90 02 12 00 01 04 00 40 00 00The bold codes (vendor and device IDs) identify this device as Allegro.comm ES1988 Allegro audio + ES56CVM-PI modem. Open this page and get the Win98SE driver for it (it's the first device in the PCI Audio/Modem Combo Device group).Or you could try this direct link to the driver. Unzip it somewhere.Next, check if in Add/Remove Programs applet there are entries containing ESS, Allegro, sp15773 or 211680 in their names (the sound driver you currently have installed) and uninstall them. Reboot in safe mode. Open the Device manager and remove any leftovers from the sound/modem drivers. Search for *.INF files in the C:\Windows\INF folder containing VEN_125D&DEV_198, delete(or move to a folder not in your %PATH% variable) the found files if any. Reboot in normal mode. Now Windows should find new devices and ask for a driver. Just cancel the dialog. Open the folder where you extracted the driver and install it (start the Setup.exe file and follow the instructions there), it'll probably ask to restart, so do it.Do NOT remove new ESS entries from Config.sys and Autoexec.bat if anything got added there by the driver. On the next Windows startup the sound should work.HTHP.S. submix8c Posted January 23, 2008 Posted January 23, 2008 ... and look here (HP Compaq for WinME) -Driver for 98 and MESAME FILE! And it was determined a waaaayyy long time ago what the device is...This is not the problem, but I have noted that the "pickup" is from INFS\OEM0.INF (not the latest). Potentially mix-and-match files (the CAT and SYS) files are criss-crossed. Yes, the files from ESS may work as well (they appear to be the same as the Service Pack), but all files related to it have to be removed (including the ones in the CABS folder), otherwise wham bit again!Bottom line: the correct INF must be used along with the correct SYS file (screw the CAT file, but use the correct one anyway). Wrong INF, right SYS, bad parameters set up from INF for the SYS in question...AFAIK, the PC is/has been using all of the Compaq stuff from the Original (Factory) Install. It appears that the D-Link is after-the-fact. And as you can see, the Modem is no longer being "picked up" (if it still is in the "box").I suspect that the BIOS was updated by the stupid Compact Interactive Update stuff, and that method is notorious for failure. Even worse, when a BIOS is updated, usually the original settings are lost! Hence the reason most people download, save somewhere, make a boot floppy with BIOS stuff on it, back up the BIOS, write down the settings, then "flash". Problem is WinPhlash/Phlash does not give an option to "back up", so usually UniFlash is used to back-up (and restore if necessary).Crappy Compaq Phoenix BIOS!!! Been there, done that, sux! MOBO is an OEM-version Standard Intel. If only HP/Compaq would stop using their own BIOS (no more "closed BIOS Options selections")!
MikeyHunt Posted January 25, 2008 Author Posted January 25, 2008 @mikeyhuntSuggest you try my solution outlined in the "windows protection" topic in this forum.Manually playing with IRQs rarely worksI agree. Thanks for your suggestion. Earlier in the looong post, I think submix or Rainy Shadow , suggested a similar solution, and it seemed to solve some of the problems I'm having. The problem kinda morphed and took on a life of it's own. Knowing what I know now, I might have said 'uncle' and just thrown the pooter off the balcony Maybe it would have been better to reload/change the operating system. (ahh... the benefits of hindsight) Thanks for your help!!
