Ambassador Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 Right now, my computer is protected by Norton Anti-Virus '06. I am starting to think it won't be long now until Norton forces us to upgrade to a newer version. When that day comes, I'm thinking of dumping Norton altogether and using a free alternative. So far, the only free AV alternatives I know of is AVG Free and Avira. I have used AVG Free on Windows 98SE before and have found it to be pretty good. I have not tried Avira as of yet.Does anybody have opinions about these two free Anti-virus programs and which one is better overall?
Tarun Posted December 2, 2007 Posted December 2, 2007 If I could only pick between the two, I'd go with Avira. Though your best bet would be avast.
anonymous_user Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 My thought are with Tarun. Out of the two:Avira but preferably avast.
FAT64 Posted December 3, 2007 Posted December 3, 2007 Personally I think that Avira is a far superior Anti-Virus program. The only drawback is the "nag screen" every time you update the virus database. If you can tolerate clicking on OK, then go for Avira. There is a third free AV program, go to www.pctools.com.
Ambassador Posted December 6, 2007 Author Posted December 6, 2007 What is this 3rd AV program and how does it stack up?
Woomera Posted December 10, 2007 Posted December 10, 2007 have anyone yet found a test on comodoAV? really like to see how good it is...oh BTW its free so add it up to your free av list
anonymous_user Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 It was once tested (by av-comparatives) and it did badly (40% I think?). I dont know if its improved now.
eyeball Posted December 11, 2007 Posted December 11, 2007 with Avira the nag screen can be removed, all you have to do is in the local security policy create a new software restriction policy under additional rules add a path rule to the avnotify.exe and disallow it and it will never nag you again
eyeball Posted December 12, 2007 Posted December 12, 2007 @eyeball - Nice one, man !!! No probs, i hate that nag screen too
Brothersoft Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 avg is better than Avria FreeAV.But i suggest using the kaspersky,it the best anti viurs software..ForrestBrothersoft support
eyeball Posted December 13, 2007 Posted December 13, 2007 avg is better than Avria FreeAV.i love the way you justify that statement with facts.....
bonestonne Posted December 14, 2007 Posted December 14, 2007 If I could only pick between the two, I'd go with Avira. Though your best bet would be avast.i second that, avast has email protection, which is clearly stated as not being included with the free version of Avira...actually someone asked me the same question earlier this week.
