A lot of great information, and a lot of had work.

But my question boils down to one thing, is there a realiable, functional app that will make my new HD the boot drive.

The story, I fixed my bricked Seagate 7200.11 (thanks to this forum) and I am trying to make my new WD Cavier Black 1T as the boot drive.

Acronis fails, tried 3 times - the error codes (yes 2) do not show up in their help database.

I have Seagate Disk Wizard, but have not tried that yet, some reason i don't trust it.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

RocketDog

You are requesting one thing but doing another. If you are trying to clone one drive to another I've not had any issues with ghost or Seagate disk wizard, if all you want ot do is make it the default boot device and reload manually or otherwise you can use diskpart.

Sorry if my my terminology is not correct or consistent.

My end game is to make my new WD Drive the primary boot drive :thumbup and turn my current primary Seagate drive into a door stop.

Thanks.

RD

Also, Disk Wizard is based on the Acronis program which is what I have via the Western Digital drive, however it does not work. I am going to be an unhappy camper if both of these drive company applications don't work and I have to purchase Ghost!

Any of the products on the first post should be able to accomplish what you want to do assuming they will successfully complete the process. Some of those listed are free others are not.

I've been tasked with testing other disk imaging solutions to see if we stay with what we are using, Ghost, or move to something with more better features less expensive, you know the drill. So far I have found the following products, some freeware, some commercial. Are there any I have missed?

I am only concerned with utilities to create disk images for windows based machines, disk to disk cloning is not a requirement but it is a benefit, image creation is a requiement. If they do others that is fine. And if we want to make this the find them all repository I will gladly add more to the list that serve other functionality and break the lists up.

When my project is finished I'll post the resulting functionality comparison here for all to enjoy.

I've used for some time now Paragon Backup & Recovery Free (it has everything that you need, ever restoring from external drive like an USB stick or HDD).

It's great and it's free.

I couldn't find the link from Paragon so I put the only link that I found.

It seems like that one is an "old" version:

If you're trying for a comprehensive list, I don't see Macrium Refelect available in several flavours including a free for home use one

Support for you name it via VBS scripts or batch files http://www.macrium.com/

Forensic images aren't default, but are available via command line switches, or it defaults to them when it can't read the filesystem on a given disk/partition.

The usual pay extra for more features, & for once the sting for server OS installs isn't so massive as with most commercial software

Restore to dissimilar hardware also available (an at cost option).

I really liked it, but couldn't justify the cost of the server version for home/hobby use so am currently using DriveImageXML, though if I'm ever feeling flush I may treat my server to a copy.
