My first step would be to check the ToS of my ISP to find out if my current plan (likely residential) allows me to run a server. If not, then upgrade to a business account. Everything else would depend on that.

It is normal for Matrix to rebuild the array on a reboot IF it finds a problem with it. But why are you running your OS on the RAID10? But yes, your replacement drive should either be blank or in RAW format.

Its actually 3 days or 3 boots. After your third boot, it will say you must activate in order to use Windows. Just hook it up to the internet and activate. If it doesn't, call up the activation center.

Its only worth switching to Windows 7 if there is a need to do it. Basically only if you have a program that requires something that 7 offers that XP doesn't. Off the top of my head, I can only think maybe DirectX 10+. If you have no specific requirements to get Windows 7, then its purely a judgement call. The only thing you are going to run into is learning the GUI differences between it and XP.

Somehow I managed to find a Wireless Draft N 2.0 router for $40 at a store. It was on sale and the last one. It supports G too. I set it up without even reading the manual, but was disappointed that the WiFi side comes unsecured by default. I haven't had the DHCP problems my Linksys did, so I don't think I need to worry about the static IP idea at all. Also I found out after setting it up, that my router is the only WPA2 network in my area. I can see 3 other networks but they are WEP. Man, you didn't tell me the WPA key was so long and annoying to type! Oh also, default when enable security for this one was WEP. I remembered your post and had chosen WPA instead. Thanks a lot.

Indeed, the Recovery partition (for Vista and Windows 7 at least) should be flagged as "hidden" so it shouldn't get a drive letter. For Windows 7, the System partition may end up getting assigned the C drive instead of the OS volume. Also note that certain notebooks that contain Realtek card readers can get that drive (even if no media is present) the C letter. It depends on in what order the system enumerates the volumes so the PE can assign the letters. As far as partitions of 1 volume go, the SB (Dell) should have marked the recovery partition hidden, and it won't get a letter. Its up in the air whether C will be the System or OS volume. Best to check the total size to be sure.

It may be easier (depending on your experience) to use AutoIT. It has an @ScriptDir macro, that will find the exact path where the script resides, which can then be concat (and/or trimmed) to find the location of the WIM.

I am going to try these drivers out today. I am setting up a demo computer with a Jetway NC63P-330 motherboard with this chipset. Unfortunately, the website for the 32bit Windows 7 driver is running really slow!

Sure, you can pull HwID from WMI, and if you install the MDAC package into your PE, you SHOULD be able to interact with a database. Unfortunately, I can't recall anyone ever making use of the MDAC package before, so I couldn't give you any specific examples.

I will soon be embarking upon adding a wireless router at home, and I had some questions about possible setups. The typical setup is enable WEP and SSID, and DHCP. However I was wondering about this idea instead... What if I disabled DHCP, and did not opt to use key security (but still used firewall) and set the "LAN/WLAN" ip for the router to some non-standard address? For example, if I set the LAN side IP to 72.0.1.1, subnet as appropriate, then set wireless connections to that network to use static IPs? Is it then not likely that someone would be able to jump into my wireless network? Example, one of my neighbors would see my signal, see that it is "unprotected", decide to connect to it but then not have any internet access! Is it possible for someone to determine what the router's IP address is if DHCP is disabled? Also, I was planning on getting a Linksys WRT model of some sort, but wondering if it supports different DHCP/DNS/etc settings for both the LAN and WLAN features on the private side? For example, I definately want DHCP to be disabled on the LAN side. Also, do these types of routers offer protection between the WLAN and LAN portions?

Good point about the toolbars. People still seem to think you need Google and Yahoo and Ask toolbars (although they probably came with the OEM load) but you really don't. Most people use those search engine toolbars to have a quick search box on their toolbar, but Firefox and Chrome (and even IE) support installable search boxes by default. Its that part right next to the address bar for the most part.

Just an update. This project is now abandoned before it got started. My netbook is running Windows 7 Starter and I have no intentions of changing it. I already have too much hardware under my name in inventory that I couldn't even fathom being approved to pick up more of it! So you guys can close this topic if you wish.

Well at this point, we're holding off until we get a response from Nero. Reason being, it turns out (and they also confirmed they knew about this) that portions of Nero 8 and Nero 9 are not compatible with Windows 7 (any version). The part that doesn't work is NCC.EXE. This is a critical component, at least for us, as this is the program that reads the CD Key and activates the product. So we are waiting to get a compatible version of Nero 9 for Windows 7.

If the card was bad, it wouldn't matter if you were in Windows or not. Either you wouldn't get video at all, or say it would be flakey in the BIOS too. If you think maybe the video cuts out after the notebook is running for x amount of time, or reaches a certain heat threshold, you can try other methods to see if you lose video. Try booting it to PE media. I know you've got them! Or even another type of LiveCD, such as a Linux which would actually let you play a movie or load 3D graphics.

I typically print all the time. Only write cursive for signatures or writing checks really. I do not use cursive enough over the past 10+ years so I don't have flow anymore.

There might be a mix up here. You can make a WinRE from DVD or from HDD. When you use DVD method, there is no RE partition on the HDD at all. You likely need to have the System Partition to use WinRE in any case, since it is designed to copy files into it during recovery. So if you did your 7 install method where you only have 1 partition, WinRE isn't supported.

2, 3 Inject drivers into the install.wim (specify the correct index as needed) using DISM. With Win 7 WAIK, you need to specify the exact INF name now, you can't use *.INF. Note: not all drivers will inject successfully.
