My co-worker got it to work, however the school had to send him a new disk. An embarassment for sure, it would appear the entire press run of the DVD I tried had a corrupted VHD on it. The VHD on the DVD was 2GB+ but the correct one was 4GB. I am going to think that the one on the DVD was likely part of a span. So let me rephrase my questions above. Considering the purchase price of the book was $30, and it came with a DVD. Is it legal for the publisher to provide a licensed copy of VPC 2007 AND a VHD with a licensed copy of XP while not charging for the license? There is no COA for XP included and nowhere on the DVD or in the book did it have any sort of EULAs or any type of documentation about it at all. Seems fishy to me.

Computer freezing during and because of backups
Tripredacus replied to buckdog05's topic in Windows Vista
Since it is a notebook, it may be possible that its power plan is interfering with the operation of the system. Check and make sure this backup is being done on AC power and not on battery to start. Then make sure that the computer is not set to go to sleep or into hibernate, and that you disable the option to power down the hard drive. If you make any plan changes like this, best to do it on the "Plugged-In" plan so that there isn't a big rush to change them back when you are done. Also, the computer freezing up may not just be the hard drive. You could also have faced a situation where the PC ran out of memory. Check the Event Viewer to see if there are any errors or warnings that appear. If it is a drive read or write issue, you will have some messages relating to disk0 or disk1 or something similar. Also, unless its necessary, unplug it from a network and/or turn off the wireless, and make sure no other programs are running. You may also try disabling the anti-virus during the transfer. I am also wondering how much free hard drive space there is on the computer. Sometimes people have said that their computers have difficulty copying large amounts of files with similar behaviours that you are describing. Try only copying in small chunks to see how well that works. And by small chunks, maybe 500MB to 1GB worth. Lastly, this external hard drive, is it connected to USB and is it formatted as NTFS? -
I've got the answer for your question. The PE is restarting because of how the startnet.cmd (and the winpeshl.ini for that matter) operates. Whether your script executes or not, we won't know because it exits after running. Since the PE has no further commands to run, it reboots which is its normal behaviour. You need to launch something to keep the PE open. Easiest may be a program or HTA that has a button that runs your script. That way, when the script is finished, the thing you launched it from is still open.

Yeah I forgot to change that style when I made the Atomic Bomb version. I typically just make backgrounds that work with the existing colors. I'll have to go in and change all my PEs soon when we get the new Office "Injunction" version in so I can change the installers, and I'll probably fix it then.

I'm just starting to get into wireless networking along these lines, so I am not 100% certain. I have not yet tried to do something like this, however you might have to set DHCP reservations for everything to get it to work.

Specific error messages would help. Also see if anything useful in Event Viewer.

As far as #2, this is going to be caused by your BIOS settings, the capabilities of your computer, or you removed something you needed with nLite. More infos: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810903 The other problems you are having may also be from things you removed with nLite.

Computer freezing during and because of backups
Tripredacus replied to buckdog05's topic in Windows Vista
First, a little forum rule to note. Do not bump a topic that is less than 24 hours old, instead edit your previous post. Second, specs on the PC would be great. -
We're also going to need to know what version of Windows 7 you have.

Here's the situation. A co-worker of mine is taking an online course for college. We called these "telecourses" back in the day but I guess they don't mail out VHS tapes anymore. Anyways, he gets a text book and it comes with a DVD. On the DVD are instructions to install Virtual PC 2007 SP1 from it. When you install it, it already has a CD Key in it so it looks like an MSDN copy but I'm not sure. Then it says to copy the VHD and VMC file from the DVD into a folder in My Documents. Then obviously, open VPC and create a VM from an existing machine. My co-worker has tried this on three different computers using 2 different VMs. 2 PCs running XP and one running Vista. Also had tried the VPC on the DVD as well as VirtualBox which I pointed out to him. After 2 weeks, he's bummed out because he can't get it to work and asked if I could give it a shot. There is one problem to start off with, and that is the VMC file has a static path to wherever the VHD was originally created before it was put on the DVD master before being pressed/replicated. I fixed this path to match its new path. Also, it appears that the VHD itself was renamed since it was created and being put on the DVD. I fixed this also. Without doing this fix, adding the VMC into VPC generated an error. What appears now is that it is impossible to use this VHD as per the instructions. My host OS is Windows 7 Professional x86. By looking at the VMC, it says the guest OS is Windows XP Pro SP2. Now there is no documentation on the DVD or in the book (although I didn't read the whole thing) that would say how it would be possible to sell a Book that came with a DVD that had a Windows XP VHD on it, let alone that copy of VPC that's on it as well. This may well limit the responses I can get here come to think of it.... Lock this thread if you feel its warranted. For background info, the book is "Computer Forensics Jump Start", printed by Sybex, ISBN: 978-0-470-46195. It appears the VHD is corrupted. Here are the following behaviours: Virtual PC 2007 SP1 When starting the session, it goes to "A disk read error occurred" Disk Management Attach VHD: "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." VirtualBox Virtual Media Manager Add Disk: Failed to open the hard disk F:\VHDs\CFHardDisk.vhd. Could not get the storage format of the hard disk 'F:\VHDs\CFHardDisk.vhd' (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED). First, an official diagram shows how you can use this specific AP to connect wired to an Xbox, I don't think the AP cares if it is an Xbox or a PC: http://www.dlink.com.au/Images/Product_ima...150_3_modes.jpg Second, if your second router lets you use it in Bridge Mode, that may work also. Correction, note that each router may have to use exceptions for DHCP, or one must have DHCP disabled and use static IP.

Also, as I noted before, it is recommended you sysprep your Windows 7 image before capture. Did you sysprep the image first?

Error message upon KMS installation
Tripredacus replied to serversovereign's topic in Windows Server
Firstly, it appears that the file you are installing is to allow KMS to service Server 2008 and Windows 7 clients, and is intended for install onto Server 2003. This information is available here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948003 Finding info on this seems a bit tricky, but this may lead you in a better direction: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968912 -
[2003] Need to determine where bottleneck resides
Tripredacus replied to Tripredacus's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
The driver update seems to have worked. We will likely end up doing some more testing tomorrow, as I only ghosted a netbook and its image is pretty small. We shall see how ghosting a server goes, but I think this issue is solved. -
Why do you need an add-on for Firefox to add a Proxy? It has built-in Proxy settings under Advanced\Network. Also, note Maxthon is just a shell for Internet Explorer and not a true browser.

I'm not sure about the questions you've asked but it seems like you've already started posting around.
-
I see that, not sure why. Hopefully just a bug.
-
What are the error codes and responses you get from running the commands?
-
This isn't actually the reason. OEM/SB are not allowed to activate retail keys, and consumers are not allowed to activate OEM keys. There may be some different Partner level policies different than what I know of, however.

I recently got a second monitor again and am now using dual display with the second monitor set to Extend. For some reason, Firefox opens by default on the second monitor and I can't figure out why it does that. How can I change it so Firefox opens on the primary monitor, or how can I reset its remembered position? I've tried the "alt+close" thing but that didn't do it.

[2003] Need to determine where bottleneck resides
Tripredacus replied to Tripredacus's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
I updated the driver for the NIC to the latest, which is still over a year old, and rebooted. Now I do not even have an Advanced tab, although the device still has the same name. How can I determine that these features are not being used? I won't be able to see if the issue is resolved as we won't be using Ghost likely until early next week. Hopefully this driver update was enough. -
not show mouse in game Command & Conquer™ 3 Kane's Wrath
Tripredacus replied to AHRIMANSEFID's topic in Gamers Hangout
OK i had to make sure you made system req, and it seems you do. I will move this topic to Gaming Forum. I did some research and found that this game uses a file in the data folder (from the install disc) with custom cursors, and if that didn't get copied over then you won't see an arrow. It may also be a localisation issue. I see that this game is in multiple languages but also from Steam. What language is on the box, or maybe you got it from Steam. Also what language install of Windows 7 do you have? -
[2003] Need to determine where bottleneck resides
Tripredacus replied to Tripredacus's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
I tried to both apply the hotfix and disabling the options manually. Both the same result. This occurs during the two scenarios: 1. Running the hotfix, before the screen with the Finish button comes up 2. Deselect/disable the offloading options in Device Properties, click OK and before Properties screen goes away DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL STOP: 0xD1 (0x141, 0x2, 0x0, 0xFFFFFADF8EF179E2) e1e5132e.sys <--- this is the Intel Pro 1000 driver Address FFFFFADF8EF179E2 base at FFFFFADF8EF0D000 Datestamp 45f08ad6 I stopped the machine from doing a memory dump because there would be no feasible way for me to get the DMP file off the drive. Both times I restarted and booted back into Windows using Last Known Good Config. So it seems Server 2003 doesn't like turning off those features. I did notice in the Intel NIC properties, concerning TCP/IP offloading, that it should not be enabled if servicing DOS clients, which we use the DOS client of Symantec Ghost. Any other ideas?
