What is the recommended version of GNU ddrescue?
Tripredacus replied to CrazyDoctor's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
This wouldn't be related to this issue would it? We are great multitaskers here, but I am going to recommend that have a single thread for your hard drive repair questions instead of a bunch of them. -

TCP/IP Networking DSL to Cable change
Tripredacus replied to christianmusicvr's topic in Networks and the Internet
DSL modems connected in Bridge Mode or other such dumb DSL modems may use a 10.x.x.x IP for the interface. For example, I am on Verizon and they assign a 10.x.x.x onto my Router. Basically it doesn't matter what your IP ends up, as long as you can access the internet and share your files. -
Fellow Tech Junkies....I need you assistance.
Tripredacus replied to adrian2055's topic in Device Drivers
Next step is to get the HwIDs for these devices, then go get the Vista driverpacks and do a string search. That's my usual step. Having an exclamation point in Device Manager is not enough information about the Firewire. There are over 40 codes that can make the <!> show up, and less than 10 of those codes deal with the wrong or no driver installed. If its a Code 10, remove the device and reboot. If it still comes up as a Code 10, verify no resource conflicts, and that FireWire is enabled in the BIOS. -
Another issue with WDS and Win7
Tripredacus replied to sanboc's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
Oooo its a Broadcom. This could be their virtual NIC or it could be a regular one. Just make sure you use DISM to put the Windows 7 driver for this NIC in your Boot image. A lot of people have problems with Broadcom, hopefully this isn't one of those times. -
If you go to Dell's website and look up the manual for the notebook model, you may find there is a jumper to use. Moving to Hardware Forum.

Another issue with WDS and Win7
Tripredacus replied to sanboc's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
What is the HwID for the NIC in the system that does not work? -
I'm going to bring the system into work tomorrow and try out a PCI Wireless NIC to see if that works any better. I am wondering if all this can be directly related to the USB drivers I am using, and not necessarily the Wireless part of it.

Its the same as previous versions of Windows. These settings are kept in Bags and BagsMRU in the registry. Here is an example of how to reset them in Windows 7: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7files/thread/c9228c03-3598-4a68-89e9-509791d0e4ea

I deleted your duplicate topic. Also, in case anyone is worried, the link posted is a file hosted on CNet. Could you post the page that leads to this link instead?

In a Windows INF file, what is the difference in behaviour from these two lines? [ControlFlags] ExcludeFromSelect = VID_2001&PID_3C00 [ControlFlags] ;ExcludeFromSelect = VID_2001&PID_3C00 I am to understand that the ; is a remark, but if it is so, why are so many INF files done with the ExcludeFromSelect remarked out?

I'm not sure, I haven't found a service manual. I wonder if there is a CMOS battery inside or a jumper to reset the unit completely. Here is the regular manual (i think) http://www.sony.net/Products/storagesolution/documents/manual_pdf/4-682-176/468217617.pdf But ooo check this page out! http://sony.storagesupport.com/product/200

Issues with WDS and Adding/Injecting drivers
Tripredacus replied to sanboc's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
The autorun.dll error is usually attributed to having a bad burn of the installation media. Of course, you are using a network deployment, but the Setup does not know any better as far as the errors go. So, here are my questions: 1. How much memory is in your client you are deploying to? 2. You should be able to open the command prompt from the screen that gave you the error. Does diskpart see the hard disk? And is disk0 the hard drive or a different drive? 3. Post up a pic of your Install Images too. Here is my old example: -
Unattended install with custom applications
Tripredacus replied to SKG's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
Well if you are using Windows 7, you are already using WIM imaging! What you can do, is put Office in the DS, like using \$OEM$\$1 or \$OEM$\$$, then you can call your program to run from the C: without having to worry what drive letter the CD-Rom is. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc766228%28WS.10%29.aspx -
Upgrading from Windows 98 Gold to Windows 98 SE
Tripredacus replied to Svenne's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Then you won't gain anything trying to go from win-98fe to 98se. You'd gain more by increasing the ram on the system.Agreed. And FWIW, I don't think an "upgrade" will wipe the Plus!98. Not for sure (I'd have to dig into my "stash"), but there may be a couple of items that may be "upgraded", but otherwise... I'm not certain, but it may depend on how Plus! was installed. Some had the Win98 + Plus OS media, others you could install Plus! using a separate disc. -
I did a little more research on the NIC driver issue, but still have no resolution. What exactly does this error mean? Could it be that some driver files it needs are in the wrong locations? I had this idea yesterday, so I checked the INF file. It goes to put the driver files into c:\windows\system32 on Win98 (its near the bottom) but the file was not actually there. The SYS file was put into C:\Windows\System! I tried copying the file to system32 and system32\drivers but still flagged. I'm going to download that driver package from work and look at it and try to figure out why the driver did not install as the INF file's instructions. Also, since this is just a Realtek USB NIC, I may get lucky and find the Realtek W98 drivers to use instead, which I have done for other NICs before. Update: No such luck yet. I am doing a bunch of research and it really looks like these are all Win98SE drivers. Is there anything different when using 98SE drivers on 98FE? Could I need to update some other files to make it work on FE?

Note: this topic will be moved to Vista Unattend of vLite depending on further information. The XP install likely failed because (I am guessing) the BIOS is set for AHCI drive type instead of IDE. How much memory is in this tablet? If you have the ability to boot the tablet with an NTFS friendly source like WinPE or NTFSDOS, you can find setupact.log in the Panther folder. It may not tell us what is wrong, but it should have logged the last thing it was doing before it locked up. One last thing, when Vista freezes as you say, does the animation still go or does that stop too?

Seeing how my regular restart button works, I decided to compare its code to the one that is not working. It is interesting because I am doing something different. Since this project is over a year old, I am not exactly sure why it is different. Here is the code for the main HTA: Sub RunRestart Set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell") objShell.Run "fscommand\restart.exe" On Error Resume Next Set objShell = Nothing End Sub So you see, the one that works calls an EXE file... It is an AutoIT program, here is the code: Switch MsgBox(1, "Restart", "You have chosen to restart the computer. Click OK to continue.") Case 1;OK pressed RunWait (@ComSpec & " /c c:\mbr 0 0 /h") RunWait (@ComSpec & " /c x:\windows\system32\wpeutil reboot") Case 2;CANCEL pressed Exit() EndSwitch Possible reasons the previous posted code did not work: 1. It is being run off a second HTA? 2. I did not use the full path like the EXE does? I have to wait until the XPe image gets its final build before I can try calling the EXE instead of wpeutil to restart the PC. I am going to have to rebuild the EXE as well to run the MBR.EXE from the X: instead of C: because it *should* still be hidden at that point.
