Well you don't really want to stop Activation from happening. If you do not activate, you are going to have some serious problems in the long run. 11. This is not enabled by default. It is an opt-in program, not an opt-out program. 19. Same thing. This only happens if you choose to use the program, and it only goes online because you can purchase an upgrade activation/product key online. 22. There is an option to go online to find a program the file can open, but it is not a default choice. Most of these things are not default, ie they do not go online unless you tell them too. You may be able to control a lot of it with Local Security Policy by creating a template and then importing it during install.

How do I run scripts from a network share
Tripredacus replied to clivebuckwheat's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
There are also registry keys used by Internet Explorer that can open prompts when running apps from a network share. Here is an example script I have used before on XP, so some keys might be different for 7. reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Download" /v "CheckExeSignature" /t REG_SZ /d "no" /f reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Download" /v "RunInvalidSignature" /t REG_DWORD /d "00000001" /f reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CUrrentVersion\Policies\Associations" /v "LowRiskFileTypes" /t REG_SZ /d ".zip;.rar;.nfo;.txt;.exe;.bat;.com;.cmd;.reg;.msi;.htm;.html;.gif;.bmp;.jpg;.avi;.mpg;.mpeg;.mov;.mp3;.m3u;.wav;" /f reg Delete HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v Shell /f Then run scripts here and when finished, this script reverts to default settings: reg Delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Download" /v CheckExeSignatures /f reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Download" /v CheckExeSignatures /t REG_SZ /d yes /f reg Delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Download" /v RunInvalidSignatures /f reg Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Associations /v LowRiskFileTypes /f -
Well this error "0x80070780" means it can't read the file. Its different than an Access Denied (permissions) error. What is the total memory on the machine and what is the size of the WIM (index) file? Also make sure you have enough hard drive space to mount the image. But try making a C:\Winpe_x86 folder and put the WIM in there. Oh forgot, try exporting image index 2 to its own WIM file and try mounting that.

If you want to do it legally, you should check your current Terms of Service if you have a residential account. Otherwise there are services out there that let you attach a domain name to a dynamic IP address, but if your ISP does not allow business activities on a residential account, they could interrupt or terminate your account on you. If this is the case, you should look into what options your ISP has. Usually business accounts will give you a static IP but will cost more. The upside to that cost is you end up getting preferential treatment if they need to send a tech out, or get a different number for technical support. There may be other perks too, like additional email accounts.

Actually a lot of companies released "Vista-only" notebooks at the time of launch just to sell Vista. MSI and ECS have done it too. Also don't forget you can see if you can get the drivers from DriverPacks. I downloaded them all and just do a string search for Hardware IDs. Moving to drivers forum.

Did I say that the factory image is an install?!?!? Where did I say that?!? HP recovery partition it is not similar to Vista/Win 7 PE nor based on windows xp's WinPE, it is HP's own proprietary recovery system. You didn't have to say anything about it. I use the same software HP does to make recovery partitions on XP. Anyways, the recovery image is stored as file based, ie you would normally be able to see the factory file structure on the recovery partition. It does not store it in a WIM or a Gho or similar format, it just sits there. But that is the partition itself, I would imagine the CD Builder creates a CD with the same type of format. I always install the CD Builder but I've never actually used it so I am not sure what the CDs look like.

Why is your WIM in the root of C? Have to changed your OS to allow you to put files there? Also make sure to run the PE Tools Command Prompt as Administrator and... post in the correct forum. Moving.

What's your internet connection like?
Tripredacus replied to jcarle's topic in Networks and the Internet
Weird, I never posted a home test before. I just got cable today and disco DSL... which my router said I was getting 900K down. So here is my new test: Work test: -
I switched to orange early on because the default you cannot see if someone puts a link in a text. That is something that spammers like to do. With the orange one I can see it right away. It took a little getting used to but now its a perfectly fine scheme. Actually, no I did try Pink originally but Orange is much better...

I am guessing you are using the blue color scheme. At the top of the forum there is a "Choose Your Color" list you can try different color schemes out. I use the Orange one, for example, because it is easier for me to read links in posts. See if one of the other colors works out better for you.

You can't just install the program to the PE. If it works portable then that would be the best. Otherwise you'll have to log its install on a regular Windows 7 system, then copy those files (and dependencies) and also recreate all the reg keys it uses. You can find instructions to create Windows RE here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744388%28WS.10%29.aspx

Besides pinging it, can it view the computer in Network or be able to access a share on it?
-
When you get it, the account you create will be an in the Administrators group, but the built-in Administrator account will be disabled. Make sure that everytime the Network selection comes up, you select Public. Install MSE and use a script-blocker for the web browser. That's how I have my PC set up and haven't had any problems. Additionally you can check out the settings in Local Security Policy, which will give you more options you can set as well.

In the Properties of (My) Computer, at the bottom, do you have a link that says Change Product Key?
-
You can find it in the registry, there is a value that gets changed. But! I have seen a failed sysprep not change that value but actually sysprep the OS. In this case, Windows doesn't work properly. Anyways, if you are in Audit Mode, sysprep.exe should open and appear on the desktop when the OS loads. Also Aero will be disabled, and the UAC will be disabled also. You can also access the Administrator account in C:\Users. And the Panther logs would be able to tell you what state the machine is in, but that could be a difficult read.

I know they aren't typical install cds, but shouldn't be some refference of the pk on one of those two discs? Or on th hp_recovery partition??!? The stored factory image isn't an install. It is image based recovery similar to Vista and Windows 7 RE.
-
I'd also be "caveat emptor" when blaming HP for what their recovery partition/CDs do. They did not write that software, they are using another company's product that has been branded for HP.

There's Windows Home OEM media floating around on the net. Get on one of the torrent sites and download it. As long as it's a OEM version of Home it should accept the key off the computer. Quoting for reference.
-
It also sounds like you could make use of EWF (Enhanced Write Filter) or Ram overlay, which will make it so any changes to the system are lost when the PC reboots. It appears that Vista supports this option, but I've only had first hand experience with it on XP Embedded.
-
Ok here's the deal. I do not know how the older pack-in Recovery disks work. That is, you just got them with the computer. If these discs were created by the user, they are going to work similar to what goes on in this thread: So that is why I asked about formatting the hard drive. If these are the created media, they read info from the MBR to verify that they are allowed to install the OS there. If the info it is looking for is missing or wrong, the CD will not install.

Vista Enterprise unattended issue
Tripredacus replied to funkymunky's topic in Unattended Windows Vista/Server 2008
Presuming you actually removed the product key, I would expect the file you uploaded to look like this: <ProductKey> <Key></Key> <WillShowUI>OnError</WillShowUI> </ProductKey> but this XML you uploaded, if you actually have your real file looking like this: <ProductKey> <Key /> <WillShowUI>OnError</WillShowUI> </ProductKey> It will install Business because you have not told Setup what to install. -

Tripredacus replied to miyuh's topic in Windows 7
Which OS and architecture are you using? Do you get any errors? What programs are you trying to install? We can't help if you do not provide some information.
