  1. This user updated to Windows 8.1, as per their thread on Technet: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/1ae70c1b-a761-4b92-8b71-531f234c2038/cannot-boot-from-windows-8-notebook-error-operating-system-version-is-incompatible-with-startup In my initial testing of using stock MS recovery, there was no problem recovering Windows 8 after it had been updated to Windows 8.1. I never tried Startup Repair in that testing.
  2. Embedded has changed from 7 to 8. For the most part, installing the OS from the DVD isn't quite enough for Embedded 8 products, as certain things do not work properly. I would build a new image/configset using ICE, reinstall 8.1 Industry Pro with the new media, and see if it works any differently.
  3. Using java.com as an example of course. This article highlights how malware is being delivered via advertisements which, in itself, is not a new or newsworthy concept. It is a different variant of "malvertisements" and should still be pointed out. http://blog.fox-it.com/2014/08/27/malvertising-not-all-java-from-java-com-is-legitimate/ I found the story via: https://twitter.com/dragosr/status/504647585227755520
  4. I think the limitation that both UIs can't be had is going to be a mistake. Currently, you can have a Windows 8.1 with both UIs if you use StartIsBack or another menu replacement. The reason why I think it is going to be a mistake is that I'm just starting to see people be interested in the games available from the Windows Store. People that want a dual experience as in Windows 8.1 are not going to like Windows 9 if the same experience can't be had. Of course, the initial mistake was forcing the Modern UI onto desktop users.
  5. See your post in the Windows 7 unattend section. Although you may find Vista and Win7 XML is mostly the same.
  6. How the OOBE phase works is, if the installation does not have the information it needs, it will show you the appropriate page. So if you don't want those pages to appear, you need to have the correct information it needs in your XML. To choose an OS: <ImageInstall> <OSImage> <InstallFrom> <MetaData wcm:action="add"> <Key>/IMAGE/NAME</Key> <Value>Windows 7 PROFESSIONAL</Value> </MetaData> </InstallFrom> </OSImage> </ImageInstall>To choose a Time Zone: <TimeZone>Central Standard Time</TimeZone>To add an activation key: <settings pass="specialize"> <component name="Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup" processorArchitecture="x86" publicKeyToken="31bf3856ad364e35" language="neutral" versionScope="nonSxS" xmlns:wcm="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WMIConfig/2002/State" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <ProductKey>XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX</ProductKey> </component> </settings> While you can find example XMLs in many threads in this section, we have a highlight thread:http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/139572-ask-your-seven-xml-here/ Also, make sure to use the Unattend.chm to look up the different objects like ProductKey, etc. In my example above I made sure to show the activation key is used in the Specialize pass, but as you can see in the documentation, you can put a product key in other places for other things. The information in the CHM is also available on Technet, but I personally prefer to use the CHM. PS: I am removing your topic tags as they are not made properly.

  8. Those guys also took down Battle.net and League of Legends servers on Saturday.
  9. Welcome to the MSFN!
  10. What is it about yes and no questions? It is solely due to driver support in the image. There isn't so much a generic HwID. Each controller will have its own HwID and specify the vendor and device IDs. So there is no garauntee that an OS can boot on IDE mode, it just so happens that is the most compatible. So it could be either Case 1 or 2. Not sure what you mean in #3, as Generalizing an image does not remove drivers. They would still remain in the OS, however sometimes Windows doesn't use them on new hardware. (this behaviour leads people to believe the drivers get removed) Anyways, the behaviour is normal. You may be able to get AHCI mode back by manually adding the driver (the "have disk" method) reboot, change the setting and then try to boot into Windows.
  11. Windows OS favorability oddly follows the similar trend of Star Trek movie favorability. I wonder what other products alternate between and releases.
  12. Here are some just for you. -Noel Hmmm lights not on. Are you implying jaclaz is a dim bulb?
  13. As I said in the deeper impressions thread, just use duckduckgo if you want anonymous searching.
  14. I enjoyed the Craig ones, although I'm not sure if I've seen them all. I know there was a dumb scene in Casino Royale where Bond saves his life using some gadget in his car.
  15. I ran into a problem installing NT4 on "newer" hardware, quite some time ago. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/122950-what-should-i-load-on-a-triple-boot-pc/?p=795100 I'm not sure what the board was, I'm thinking it was an Intel 865 chipset.
  16. I think the strangest thing about private.me, is that it is owned by a lighting company. Anyways, it is some free advertisement for them huh? Why not just use duckduckgo? EDIT: Lostinspace beat you to this topic: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/172500-new-search-engine-promises-to-keep-your-data-private/
  17. I have seen them all, I'm not sure I have a favorite or enough to list. I like bits and peices of the movies... like that white Lotus (or whatever) that could also go underwater.
  18. I got a new computer! It is in the middle of this picture:
  19. That wouldn't work around here. I'm not sure what it is like in Chile, but here if you hit a domestic animal you are supposed to pull over and call it in. I'm also not certain if this is a rule of law or a neighborly etiquette.
  20. The only product I am aware of (that I use) that has a seamless, rapid-release type update system is Chrome. It updates itself and never notifies anyone, but then again it never has any problems. It hasn't helped Firefox much (imo) because it still notifies and asks to update... and I'm still clicking NO because I don't want my browser to start looking like Chrome.

  22. Well, I guess I haven't had to do that in some time then! You can try enabling boot logging, but in my experience sometimes the file isn't helpful.
