Oh I forgot to mention that I did not delete the ~Windows.BT or SW folder after I went to Windows 7. So it is possible it just knew I already had Windows 10 because those files were still there.

Free upgrade to Windows 10 and downgrade to Windows 8.1
Tripredacus replied to tomasz86's topic in Windows 10
Oh forgot this thread. I posted in the "Upgrade experience" thread that you can just install it again. I didn't use the GWX icon because it was broken, but used the 64bit media creator and did NOT make the ISO. -
It wasn't mine. It was an older system, a few years old I believe. I don't even remember who the manufacturer is... but you are right. RAID on notebooks are typically found in the ones marketted towards engineers and games. So "high-end" types. Back on topic. I was able to go back to Windows 7. This is NOT something you want to do, at least not at this stage. Here were the problems. - No USB ports worked! Fortunately the board I was using had PS/2 ports on them, but PS/2 is not PnP. I plugged in the mouse and had to use the power button to turn off the PC. And then turn it back on. I did it this way, instead of using the reset button, because I didn't want to break the mirror. When booted back up, PS/2 mouse worked and I was going to connect to a network share to update the USB drivers. So I had to plug in a PS/2 keyboard. This cause the mouse to stop working! So I had to do a shutdown and boot back up again. Bottom line: USB keyboard and mouse did not work unless I booted the PC up with PS/2 keyboard attached. I'm NOT digging into this one, just it was the first thing I noticed. - Office Starter's Click-To-Run drive (Q: ) was missing. Word still opened and I don't remember what that virtual drive was needed for. - A large amount of the scheduled tasks were corrupted or missing. As soon as I opened Task Scheduler, I had to click OK about 30 times on the various notifications that x task was corrupt. All of them were OS tasks! All the Office 2010 Tasks were missing! One user on Technet has reported getting corrupted tasks when going from Windows 10 to Windows 8.1. So yes you can do this uninstall of Windows 10 but your OS might have some problems. SFC did not find any problems. The other good news is that you can update to Windows 10 again. In fact, when it finishes the process, it says "Welcome back."

How to avoid being "upgraded to Win 10" against your will:
Tripredacus replied to dencorso's topic in Windows 8
An unfortunate scenario has come to light. Say you had chosen to reserve Windows 10 at some point in the past. Say you are seeing all the negative reactions about Windows 10 and want to wait a while before upgrade or maybe you changed your mind and don't want it. Well guess what? TOO BAD! A user on another forum has found this out the hard way. I would consider it "being upgraded against your will" although not exactly the same as this topic. Here is what his computer now says... -
Yikes, no! You can do RAID on a notebook (look in my previous post with the spoiler) but you would need one with 2 HDD bays. Windows 10 updated on my test PC just fine. Stayed on local account. RAID intact, software works... Office 2010 Starter works... Recovery partition is still present but the lack of F8 menu means you can't boot into it. So now I am going to uninstall the Update (if it works) and try to re-get the update, as people were wondering about that.

OOBE in Windows 10 (as well as newer installs of 8.1) now will attempt to go online to download new/updated OOBE pages. One example would be (maybe ) if they changed the EULA, it would be available on a new install immediately. Of course, you can just unplug the network cable. In my experience (so far) Windows 10 hasn't complained or had an error due to lack of internet access.

Another reason why the IoT may not be that good an idea ...
Tripredacus replied to jaclaz's topic in Technology News
I never use GPS. When I had rental/loaner cars with those things I would tape a piece of paper over the display because it was too distracting. I still keep paper maps in my car for areas that I travel often. When I go to new areas, I will try to find a paper map. If it is not found, I will look at the area map in a phone book, such as if I am in a hotel. Worst case scenario, I will actually TALK TO ANOTHER PERSON to get directions. GPS sounds great but when it tells you that you are driving in the Atlantic Ocean there is a problem. -
It will be an update roll-up. One obvious difference to me seems to be that Windows 10 updates do not seem to show up on the Update Catalog, which is disappointing.

How can I clean install Windows 10 and activate it using W7 license?
Tripredacus replied to nice_guy75's topic in Windows 10
I think the legal side covers the original license. I don't think that Windows 10 or the activation servers do anything about it. Here is a scenario: Your built/bought your computer and you bought either Retail or OEM System Builder kit version of Windows 7 or 8. You have the DVD and the product key label. You upgrade to the free Windows 10. So what is stopping you from taking that DVD and product key and installing it on another hard drive or computer? The EULA does. I think it is physically possible to do it and I don't know what would happen if you tried it. Do we think that the activation server is keeping track of what licenses were upgraded to the free version? Maybe... but it wouldn't work properly for everything. One example is any Windows 7 from an OEM, where you have (ie Dell) using one product key for all their computers. Certainly upgrading 1 Dell won't make it so all the other Dells won't be activated or able to be upgraded. -
Another new ADK, anything different from the RTM version? https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/a31d1dee-8f00-44c8-bf3f-e068d183b65e/windows-adk-for-windows-10-july-2015-now-available?forum=win10itprosetup

You can upgrade with the ISO or the online downloader. Now... I do not know what Windows 10 does regarding the license already on the machine. -
Free upgrade to Windows 10 and downgrade to Windows 8.1
Tripredacus replied to tomasz86's topic in Windows 10
I'm not sure if it has to do with license... I don't know if you can re-upgrade to 10 again or not. Maybe wait for someone to test it out? -
I haven't been able to get the GWX icon to appear on the system. Running the task manually fails. I had seen it once, but apparently another Windows Update caused GWX.exe to no longer function! Anyways, there is a new Application Event Log called GWX-Ins. The icon is supposed to show up after a reboot, but doesn't. After clearing and restart, it makes 6 logs: - GWX Main: Launched by task - GWX Main: Launched for tray startup - GWX CompatLib: Markers read successfully - Machine is not MDM managed - Windows is activated - GWX Main: App failed to start hresult: Element not Found Anyways you can upgrade using one of the downloads here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Which is what I am doing now.

How i can disable this program!?

asdasasa new to the forum. Please do not bump posts so soon or make topic titles in all caps. You can read the forum rules regarding these. -
Dell spec sheet says the 650 can use this: http://www.dell.com/downloads/us/products/precn/ws650_spec.pdf Ark shows that CPU uses 1066MHz FSB... http://ark.intel.com/products/30795/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E7340-8M-Cache-2_40-GHz-1066-MHz-FSB So I couldn't find a list of compatible processors for that model. On Dell's site that might be possible but it requires a service tag. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/precision-650/configuration

How can I clean install Windows 10 and activate it using W7 license?
Tripredacus replied to nice_guy75's topic in Windows 10
I don't think this is a thing. I've been reading that the free Windows 10 does not use the original license of the machine at all, but a runtime or volume license to activate. -
Well at least MS is being upfront about it... I wonder if this would protect them against lawsuit when something will invariably go wrong.

Huh. That's what Unchecky uses as well. What's the difference between 0.0.0.0 and 127.0.0.1? A webserver (IIS/Apache) may be running on the computer, for one. AKA "home" is a valid address.

We've known about the Express Settings thing for a while. You should edit your post and link to the reddit threads you got this information from, presuming that author wasn't doing anything illegal.

What I'm hoping is if I end up with a broken OS, maybe I can learn how to fix whatever the problem is.
-
I actually set the system up not as an optimal system, but more likely either a regular joe type thing OR (more realistically) "likely to fail" type of configuration. This time around, I am actually using matched size drives* however they are not anywhere close to being new. More importantly they are quite old! AND they are 1x 80GB Western Digital and 1x 80GB Seagate! The only reason why I chose to do a RAID1 was because of a user on Technet who mentioned that when he upgraded his PC to Windows 10 IP, it broke his mirror. I also purposefully chose Office 2010 Starter because I know it is not compatible with Windows 8.1. The real test is whether or not I can use the Windows 7 recovery partition after the upgrade. Presuming I can even do the upgrade since I may have to remove Office first. However the RAID test is also important because if the upgrade removes the RAID software, this could be a big problem. So far I am not at the point where I have gotten a GWX notification. I may have more updates to install, so I will have to see in the morning.
