  1. If I do just what Clint sayd, then I doubt nuhi looks at Task Manager numbers. I check disabling these services in this way (going to install without RB/SF, after this). ReadyBoost gave 10MB back and SuperFetch around 30MB. I checked this a 2nd time to confirm and check paging file as well. Numbers remained the same, but paging file also is 30MB less usage and I also stop Software Licensing (only used for me for RB).
  2. Home Basic: Windows Vista Standard (Aero without Glass and additional effects) Windows Vista Basic (XP-like) Windows Standard (9X like) Windows Classic (even more 9X like) Other Vista flavours: Windows Aero Windows Vista Basic Windows Standard Windows Classic Windows Aero allows disabling of Glass, which gives a different form of the Windows Vista Standard interface. Also HW-accelerated? From my previous postings I would say yes, but I am not sure anymore.
  3. I think Clint is right, but needs to check his attitude. There are other/better ways to make your point, instead of trying to shove it down somebodies throat. Disabling ReadyBoost does not free up any memory, except for the amount the service uses. ReadyBoost only works, when you have set-up a Flash drive compatible with it (fast enough) to use some of its space as a cache (for smaller files). There is a nice Blog about it that gives a better idea of what it does (Microsoft information is not that clear on this) and a reference to a FAQ. It can be found here.
  4. @Clint Nice, would really like to know how this was established and if this was with vLite or womething else. DId you just remove the winsxs folder or waht?
  5. ALternatively, you could use Daemon Tools or (Alcohol) to mount the ISO and have vLite handle the complete process for you.
  6. I think you are right, except you should replace Glass by Aero. Both make use of the Desktop Window Manager and both use 3D capabilities, handled by you graphics card (when possible).
  7. Yes, I find that hard to believe, but an article of Vista Beta 2 at Anandtech brought this to my attention. Sceptic as I am, I first checked this myself. I expected more memory usage and this was not an issue, I wanted to see how responisve my system was and this indeed was better with the Aero interface. This was indeed a lot better with Aero interface. Windows Vista Aero Glass Windows Vista Standard (Aero without Glass) Windows Vista Basic (XP-style) Windows Vista Classic (9x/ME?) Anandtech article Blog on Windows Vista interface(see 02 december 2006)
  8. Windows Vista Standard csrss.exe 404K 2952K csrss.exe 708K 5468K dwm.exe 17396K 36584K Total 18MB 44MB Memory used 327MB Windows Vista Basic csrss.exe 444K 2992K csrss.exe 5536K 10304K dwm.exe 1508K 2660K Total 7.3MB 15.6MB Memory Used 307MB (first value is memory usage private memory, 2nd is the working set; memory usage taken from performance page) Since dwm.exe can be disabled as a service when Basic is used, Standard uses around 30MB more memory. Because the interface seems more responsive with Standard (not Glass: Home Basic) I also use it, even though it costs more memory. Memory usage is abstract while system responisveness is a real benefit you notice.
  9. I just did some tests with Windows Vista Standard (Aero interface no Glass?) and the Windows Vista Basic interface. The first requires "Desktop Window Manager Session Manager" service to be enabled, which takes up an additional 20MB of memory. For Basic interface one of the csrss.exe processes is used and memory for this is reduced when Standard is selected. I noted, that the CPU power required for standard interface is 25% max and for Basic (less glimmer) it is max 35%. So it seems that you can gain some performance improvement by selecting more glimmer. This all depends on your setup. I have an ATI X800, P4 3.33GHz and 1GB internal memory. I have enough memopry and prefer less CPU intensive UI, so I selected Standard, while if your balance is different (better CPU, less memory) or have a poor graphics card, then you might want to select Basic. How I tested: drag a window over your screen (contents must be visible while dragging)and watch the Task Manager CPU usage or resize a window quickly.

    Error in 0.8 Beta

I ran vLite both from XP and now Vista, but never from C-drive. I always use d: or e: also my image is also sometimes on the same drive sometimes on the other. Might it be that there is some other process that checks the file instead of a virusscanner? Windows Malicious software tool running in background, Windows Defender, Ad-watch from Ad-aware? Or does it always produce this error on the same file and is there no coïncidence?
  11. Windows consists of multiple part. I am now at 2.7GB (2.51GB Windows, Users 125MB, Program Files 50MB, Boot 13MB, Program Data 3MB) excluding pagefile. If I remove all remaining components that I now have installed, vLite tells me I would gain 68MB on my Home Basic installation. I do not think installing Vista on a 2GB drive will be possible at least not in the near future, unless the winsxs can be reduced conssiderably (this takes up 1GB).
  12. Finally found the cause, after a lot of booting into safe mode, uninstalling a lot (Windows Installer type of installations can not be uninstalled in safe mode). When selecting 640x480 in the boot menu I did get to Vista and from there uninstalled ATI drivers. After that issue remained, but instead of a blank blue screen now a BSOD was shown with IRQ_NOT_EQUAL_OR_LESS (Or what is the message, one of the most frequently shown messages in XP, escpecially when overclocking). After this I set-up a dump file on crash and it turns out a program against activation was the cause: wh=V le=a hu=i up=e n=topp ak=r -y
  13. I installed my system completely under Windows Vista Home Basic ran by vLite and now it crashes with a tick of the HD and static from my speakers when it has just logged in. I can start safe mode and try to disable start-up items, but without luck so far. This also occured with 0.8 alpha 11, but then I did not notice the tick of the HD and the speaker noise. I thought I might have done something wrong, but now I am in doubt Strange thing is it was this morning, while yesterday evening I restarted several times without installing new software or changing anything radical. Previous time I also tried 8 hours after initial problems, but still it did not work. I though my pc was at fault and let it run idle to allow a "warm reboot" to rule out any hardware issues. I can not post all the details at the moment (from work), just wanted to poll if anyone else had encountered these kind of issues with vLite (I do not want to blame it, but never had this with the full Vista release. I ran vLite for HOMEBASIC without selecting (more or less, will update later on): Shell event sounds, Windows Photo Viewer, Windows Mail, Defragmenter, Windows Aero Theme, ReadyBoost, SuperFetch. I installed: ATI 7.1 Beta 8.33, DivX 6.4, Avast! 4 Home 4.7.942, Creative Audigy Beta 2.12.0001, DEAMON Tools 4.0.8, Firefox 2.0.0.1, Intel INF 8.1.1.1010, OpenOffice 2.1, Realtek NIC 6.101, Sun Java 1.6 (J2RE6), Xvid 1.1.2.
  14. The general setting is in the control panel under user accounts (can be disabled under your user). It can not be disabled per application as far as I know (otherwise I would prefer that too). vLite allows disabling UAC in the tweaks, so it will be disabled on first boot.
  15. Click on the link and that is the changelog. To the left is a link to download(s) for installation and self-extracting archive.
  16. vLite removes components from the installation and therefore the installation ISO is smaller, but also the WIndows Vista you installed. Vista uses 8GB for me by default, I now am down to an installation ISO of 667MB and a Vista installed size of 2.5GB.
  17. Did Windows Photo Gallery get dropped or merged into Windows Photo Viewer as I only see the that one? Also when I try to write (burn direct) after erasing, I get a write 9216 error. Probably, need to eject first. SO I did and after this, option was still burn direct, but right bottom shows make ISO (and not burn as it should). Finally, when starting vLite, filter is installed. But on 2nd start license is shown (should be before or right after installation of filter).
  18. As I recall there is an option on the tweaks page to force the Aero Glass.
  19. Nothing serious to comment, but try running vLite under Vista I can guarantee no BSOD anymore ;-) (BSOD no longer part of Vista)
  20. I think quite a while back nuhi already noted that nothing could be ported from nLite to vLite, functionality needs to be rewritten mostly if not all.

    services..

Some services that can not be disabled, should not be disabled. The Software Licensing service you refer to has nothing to do with WGA it is also used by Avast (required at least for proper installation). Indeed Windows XP uses less, may work betetr on your PC, but some people always want the latest (like me). If it ain't broken don't fix it is the common term, but some peopel always try to brake stuff :-)
  22. I also use DAEMONTools 4.08HE, 4.06 is the first version with "full vista support". So you could check this. I have no issues with Vista RTM whatsoever.

    .7 & Defender

It is indeed annoying, but I manually perform updates and hide every update of Windows Defender and do not tyry to install it.
  24. Just accept bare minimum and remove all components on your Vista edition or wait a bit longer. For me it is down to 750MB, so it will almost fit a CD . As I understand support and upgrade are not required, so it might just fit, but I will await next release of vLite before playing with it some more.
  25. I checked again and the new seam to appear a bit blurry when compared to the original/default. However it does appear more consistent and it will most likely go unnoticed (the blurry bit). I do not like the System substitute as it is less noticeable (System seems bold). Exspecially the Times replacement is much better. Good job!
