  1. That is true, furthermore only 64-bit editions of Vista support over 4GB of physical memory. Found this site with more information, but it has not been updated for Windows Vista: Operating Systems and PAE Support
  2. It would be a nice thing to tell us how you managed this or where you got the information from to do this?
  3. I also set the entries under "[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders]". Although these are not strings, but defined in hex-format (REG_EXPAND_SZ). This worked fine for me for the following settings: "My Video", "My Pictures", "Desktop", "Favorites", "Start Menu", "My Music", "Programs", "Startup", "Administrative Tools", "Personal"
  4. Games will run about 10% slower according to Microsoft themselves! At the moment drivers are not near to this, although AMD/ATi has done a lot to improve their drivers, Nvidia has quite some work to do before they get there. Vista will appear faster with Aero interface with a decent videocard and you will get nicer effects with less performance used by CPU (Aero interface is hardware accelerated by your Graphics card, if supported). Vista should fine with 1GB of memory, if you have a ReadyBoost compliant USB stick you can even try the ReadyBoost feature to see if it helps improve performance. Otherwise you can try and upgrade your memory if you want to make such an investment. Before that: if you do not plan to upgrade your PC in the comming years or are willing to purchase a retail version of Vista (bound to person, OEM is license is bound to your PC), then I would think about it if I were you. See what Vista has to offer you over Windows XP and see if it is worth the money you are going to spend on Vista.
  5. I do not think Glass can be enabled on Home Basic and even if so, it would appear illegal to me if you do this. Activating functionality that is not supposed to be present in your version. Why even bother to buy it then? Is pricedifference that big in other countries? The Dutch version of Windows Vista Home Premium 64-its OEM is €88 and the same Hom Basic version costs around €7 less. Not worth the trouble in my opinion, I would go for the Home Premium. I am going for this too when I buy a new system 64-bit system in the near future.
  6. @prx984 Yes by disabling some of the visual effects and unticking Glass. Still you will have to keep away from start-tab or you will be horrified by Flip 3D.
  7. @tom_vilsack checking updates is not the problem, installing them is the problem that did not work (at least for me it did not after removing Component Cache).
  8. This is used for Windows Mail amongst others along with Secure Accounts Manager. I keep themes enabled, because Aero interface improves performance and appearance and it only costs some extra memory usage. If you have 1GB or more and a decent processor I suggest to keep it enabled. WMI is one of those services that I do ot want to disable. I do not like disabling services, which can costs me a lot of time figuring out why an applictaioon wil not install/start. If it could be used/required and it start when set to manual, then I just let it be.
  9. Avast! Home Free, but possible I will switch to Avira Antvir PE when it comes available for Vista. I think it is better, but I still need to try it out first.
  10. I would indeed not recommend to remove it, but hiding from excplorer I did with the following Registry tweak: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ; Remove Public folder from Explorer [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{4336a54d-038b-4685-ab02-99bb52d3fb8b}]
  11. @prathampl I also added some tweaks for Vista, am curious as to waht you will come up with.
  12. I found some files under sources\license referring to other Vista versions as well. I removed these BurnOn CD&DVD does not report that the disc is too small. Now trying to burn (image) with vLite and that goes without an issue. Maybe the error can be renamed or is it a general errornumber? Maybe even check up front if image/files fit the disc?
  13. Finally 1 of the new burning tools I tried, told me that image of 659MB does not fit the required 658MB. Still CDR Tools also does not allow me with overburn to burn the disc properly :-/. Seems I will have to wait for the next release of vLite and hope it removes some additional stuff for me.
  14. Strange enough I can not burn with vLite from an image or directly. I get the following error: The disc I use is 700MB and my ISO is 659MB. Also it shows Make ISO after erasing (erase is still the selected option).
  15. Windows update does not even install the Windows Mail Junkmail update. Maybe files beeing updated are placed in the Component cache or files that the updatefiles itself are stored there? Anyway I think I will leave Component Cache enabled for now.
  16. I also noticed the .NET in Windows Update. Will check if it installs tomorrow, but I doubt conclusion will be any different.
  17. HD manufacturers like WD are cheap bastards that state size in Mb, which is actually x1000, x1000 bytes. A CD is really 700MB, so x1024, x1024. However some other data needs to be burned to the CD as well, like a Table of contents, so in reality, you will have less than 700MB available, but you can always try to overburn. This should pose no problem in the majority of cases, but it is recommended to test your CD afterwards as is possible with vLite or some other tools like CD/DVD-Speed.
  18. Just my two cents. I thought don't was spoken language and never used in written language (do not)?
  19. Activation on the same pc is not limited I think. Last I heard directly from Microsoft is that Retail versions are bound to you for life, a OEM versio is linked to your pc (components). There are always exceptions for this last one that can be discussed with Micsrosoft: for instance PC is damaged by lightning and components are replaced by different comparable components (not upgrade components). Why I know? I contacted Microsoft Netherlands by phone, because I want to replace my current 32-bit PC in the near future (when a Budget DX10 card comed out: Nvidia 8600, ATi X2000GT?), but do not want to pay €90 twice for a 32-bit OEM and a 64-bit OEM version or once €215 for a Retail version. Now I will keep using my RC2 key with the appropriate hack for a month or 2 until I have bought my new PC. I activated my PC with all kinds of Vista versions and if Microsoft has a problem with this, then they will most likely let me know one way or the other. I even told them one the phone as I believe them to be reasonable. Better to have someone buy 1 license instead of 2, than to sell no license at all.
  20. @FnF I have no issues with Dutch version of Vista (Home Basic vLite'd under Home Basic) @TheTripleX I checked as soon as I read this, but I have no problems with Visual C++ Redistributable (within ATI Catalyst 7.1 Final) when Component Cache is removed. Did not check Windows Update yet.
  21. I might be mistaken, but I think driver integration is for use within Windows, not for the drivers you require at boot/setup for RAID-configurations.
  22. I know this might be a bit difficult and it is not a big issue, but it would be nice to somehow see to what Vista version a presest is related to (as it is already stored in the preset) when you want to load/overwrite a preset.
  23. Well, with 0.9 beta out and COmponent Cache removable I am down to 1.4GB for Windows folder and total diskspace used is 1.5GB excluding the pagfile.
  24. Confirmed, winsxs directory is down to 90MB with less than 5000 files.
  25. Ok thanks, will try again. What does this removal of Component cache mean functionally. Windows Vista asking for the DVD if a file needs to be restored?
