  1. thx Zxian, I have taken a look at your guide but I can't find anything that applies to me. I haven't done anything but webdesign lately and browsing for tutorials. That makes malware the most likely option but I am protected with ZA:SS and I have also scanned with Spybot S&D. Both come up clean. This problem has just been introduced gradually. It started with windows taking longer and longer to shut down and now it just hangs when I try to. I get no special error messages of any kind except for the vanilla "we are sorry for your inconvinience" one. If you are thinking fragmentation I have to dissapoint you on that one as well because I have diskeeper set to smart schedule. The main problem is that there are no error messages so I don't really know where to start searching.
  2. My computer has been behaving oddly lately and I'm pretty sure it is caused by explorer.exe. What will happen is that the machine will seemingly hang but if I open task manager, kill exploere and restart it then the machine will continue to work fine. This usually occurs when I'm exiting a lot of applications, so my guess is that explorer has problems unloading dll's. Explorer will also almost allways hang on shutdown so when I click shutdown I get the trying to close unresponsive app screen with the blue bar going across teh screen and then it will prompt me to "end now". In addition to exploer acting up I have noticed that when I start and exit maxthon it will hang for a moment and then suddenly start working again. I also have the problem that mediaplayer classic will take forever to load any movie files and then after it has played for a while it'll start dropping frames though the audio will play just fine. I am pretty sure thse problems are related though I'm no expert which is why I'm asking if someone please has some advice for me. thx in advance.
  3. uharc is really good but I think winrar is simpler so I'm sticking with it.
  4. Mine dosn't need much explenation. Gordon Freeman from the best computer game ever. So why the numbers? Simply cause the letter variation is usually taken allready.
  5. In case anyone is interested I figured it out for myself. Turns out some of the objects that was supposed to be in frame 3 appeared in frame 1 and caused a white screen. I just corrected that and it worked.
  6. Hi guys, I'm a noob to flash and as such I know very little but I thought I could get this one thing right. Appears as if I was wrong. I built a preloader for my site and it's not working. I ctrl+enter to preview it and then hit ctrl+enter again to simulate download, and all I get is a white screen. This is my file: http://s63.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3OQ6ZINUSEA7K06YYACMOFSYMZ It would be awesome if someone could take a quick look at it. It's made in Flash 8. Here's the AS I used: bytes_loaded = Math.round(this.getBytesLoaded()); bytes_total = Math.round(this.getBytesTotal()); getPercent = bytes_loaded/bytes_total; this.loadBar._width = getPercent*80; this.loadText = Math.round(getPercent*100)+"%"; if (bytes_loaded == bytes_total) { this.gotoAndPlay(3); } The length of my bar is 80px. Registration point is left side middle. thx in advance.
  7. Hey, this is great, thx. Any way I can rip out the languages I don't need or is there little to gain by doing it?
  8. Yeah it's very possible and easy to slipstream SP2 onto it. Follow the guide for slipstreaming regular office over at unattended.msfn.org and just change the filenames. There's only one file to slipstream so it's a no brainer. As for shrinking it. Read above. You need Filemon from winternals and set a filter to monitor just your install of proofing tools from the mst file. Then you just use the output from filemon to copy the reqiured files over to a new folder and wolla, you have your shrinked proofing tools. You could probably use this method to shrink any app.
  9. Works fine in FF but I can't get it to work in IE. It's kinda cool but not very useful. All I could find was cams of random buildings, not very interesting.
  10. Falcon Northwst or Voodo PC anyone? I think they are better then alienware but way overpriced. I allways build my own desktops but I love my acer laptop so that is where my vote goes.
  11. cleartype on, I think it's more comfortable to read the text with it on, don't have to strain my eyes as much.
  12. I've got this really wierd problem. If I press the key combination to lock the workstation, Win+L, my machine freezes for a few minutes then reboots. I think there may be a BSOD in there somewhere but it flashes by so quickly I'm not sure if that is what it is. After the machine has rebooted I ran Crash analyzer from winternals and determined that my graphics card, xfx 7800 gt, was stuck in an endless loop and that the problem eather was driver related or hardware related. I got the forceware v81.98 installed. But to me it seems very odd that the gpu drivers should be the source of the problem with the Win+L key combination. Because it only happens then, and it allways happens then. I've reproduced it 3 times in a row just to make sure. I probably should add that I recently added a Saitek cyborg evo force joystick to my system and that I installed ms flight sim 04, but that does not seem like a logical source of my problem, then again when were computers ever logical. So, any help appriciated. thx in advance.
  13. @nologic: I agree with you. I'm a noob here and when I try to search there are so many false positives. I feel there should be a sticky that covered a few very general terms (names of possible methods, no guides). That way we noobs would have a better idea of what to search for. And maybe a few links to some of the good explenations already given. In fact your first post in this thread has helped me out a lot and you could amlost sticky that. But if it is not too much to ask I was hoping that you might clerify a few things. 1) what is the easiest method of unattended installation and integration onto a win xp install cd if your primary concern is updating the applications install files on the disc hen new versions come out. That is replace the files on the disc with a newer version of the app. and 2) do I have to learn AutoIt or does there exist switches for nearly all apps. Right now I'm learning "RunOnceEx cmd maker" and "universal silent switch finder" and I'm just wondering if I'm wasting my time because I won't be able to get all the apps I want. Perhaps that answers my first question but I have not seen any good guides to xplode though I know that RunOnceEx.cmd maker can output to its' file format. Perhaps it won't be that hard to find out how to import and integrate it however I'm concerned that xplode might expire before I fully learn how to use it. I don't really see why it has to be timebomb shareware when private persons are inspired to use it.
  14. oh wow thanks that's awesome. wish more apps had this feature.
  15. Well, your post is very uninformative so I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to accomplish but if you are trying to put them on a xp install disc then these three pages should be all you need. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?act=Attach&type=post&id=4874 http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=16709 http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/31/ but really if all you want to know is where on the disc you should put it then this is what to read http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/18/
  16. Fixed it. What I did was monitoring a healthy install with filemon and used the output to find which files were used. Then I copied the ones I didn't have over to my shrinked source and it worked.
  17. I have discovered the source of my problem. It seems that in my attempt to shrink the proofing tools source I have deleted some files which it depends on but which it dosn't formally request through an error message thus not telling me about it so that I may copy it over to the new folder. Is there a way in which I can find out about which files that are missing?
  18. I am trying to create a silent install for Proofing tools so that I can install it silently after office in a RunOnceEx fashion. After using ORK and generating the MST file I start the install using the provided switches the install seems to start, the green bar goes over the screen a few times and then disappears as it should on a silent install however when I look in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs, Proofing Tools is not listed and if I try to type stuff into Word the new dictionarys are not available. What is happening? What am I doing wrong? Is there something special I have to do to get this to work? Help appriciated.
  19. Hey that's not such a bad idea. Thanks for the tip. I'm gonna try it out real soon.
  20. Less arguing more working. I like what I'm reading. Keep up the good work Aegis.
  21. I know there is a AutoIt program for shrinking office itself so I assume it should not be impossible to do this with proofing tools as well. Since the files I need to install from proofing tools only takes up 46.6 mb fully unpacked and installed it seems rather pointless to waste 600 mb on the entire thing. I would grately appriciate some help in doing this as it would allow me to put both office and proofing tools on the same disc and have them install silently. thx in advance.
  22. I somehow fixed the problem by applying a windows update. Don't know which but it seems to be working now. So that's really cool but my next question is can I shrink proofing tools? I tried using office shrinker but it didn't seem to work.
  23. I'll let this speak for itself: Flash: Steve Gibson has been working with the WMF vulnerability and is now convinced that this is an intentional backdoor into Windows added by Microsoft. Microsoft has patched the WMF vulnerability in Windows 2000 and XP, but in his research for a fix for Windows 95/98/Me Steve has come up with a blockbuster. It is his considered opinion that the WMF vulnerability could not have been a mistake. It was an intentional backdoor inserted into Windows by Microsoft for reasons unknown. Listen for details. Podcast: http://thisweekintech.com/sn22 click "main feed" Transcript: http://www.grc.com/sn/SN-022.htm What do you make of this? Some people hate the guy, other's love him. But I don't think he would do this purely as a publicity stunt. EDIT! Perhaps I should add something from wikipedia before you all freak out: It is well known that the WMF vulnerability stems from an intentional feature in the design of WMF that allows code to be embedded into WMF images; this code is executed when the image is viewed. The original purpose of this was mainly to handle the cancellation of print jobs during spooling. This is a feature that has extreme security implications in the context of the Internet, but is from another time (Windows 95), when MS had very little interest in networking beyond trusted internal corporate environments. Over the years this code has lived on in Windows without being reviewed in the current context of Internet connectivity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Metafile_vulnerability That means that most of this had a purpose but what is still a factor is the fact that you have to set the file size to 1 in order to get this to run. That seems very spesific and delibarate to me.
  24. Hi, I think this app is an excellent idea but it's just not working for me. I'm using a fresh virtual machine with xp pro sp2. My problem is that it dosn't seem to copy any files. It let's me configure everything just fine however right after I press the button to let it start I get the Shrinkage allready complete message, long before it has copyed anything. Looking in the office.log file I can see a chained install return code:1603. I think that is the problem right there but I'm not sure. Any help would be grately appriciated.
  25. thanks posix. I know their service sometimes are buggy but I don't have an ftp at my disposal. All I need for this to work is quicktime alternative right? or do I need that even? Regardless, this is so sweet. thx again
