  1. A MSN KB article states that (thx for cluing me in LLXX): Well, been there, done that, doesn't work. I tried every version of chkdsk that can be run and even scheduled a bootup run to get no windows interferance. No luck. Though I can happily state that Norton Disk Doctor does indeed find an error on the drive and suggests that I run chkdsk to fix the problem. yay! Anyway. The file system is NTFS. PATA Maxtor 120GB drive. disk management reports 114 GB total space in one partition which I think is what it has allways been. So, still looking for solutions and any input is grately appriciated.
  2. Sorry if this is not the right section but I just don't know where else it would fit. Anyway, I was working away modifying the contents of a backup archive when all of a sudden BSOD. When I had rebooted I discovered to my horror that the entire 15GB archive was gone along with it's folder. I fired up Ontrack EasyRecovery and had the archive back in it's entirety in no time at all, albeit now on a different drive. So, after checking that everything was in order with the archive I was gonna copy it back to the original HDD it resided on. I do a quick check to see that I have enough diskspace but discover that there's something odd about the number windows is displaying in the properties of the disk. So I open the disk and manually select all the files and do a right-click>properties to see the combined filesize. Sure enough, the combined filesize of all the files on the disk is exactly 15GB less then what windows is reporting as used space for that drive. Ok, so basically I have 15 GB of disk space that is somehow floating in limbo wasting that space but I can not access any files that might reside in that space. It's missing, and no it dosn't help to turn on show hidden files and folders. I'd really appriciate some help on this because I could really use that space for something besides an imagenary file. TIA -Fr33m4n
  3. So since the nvraid bios reported a healthy raid array I decided to see if I could run the windows recovery console and maybe replace the NTLDR. Well much to my surprise, my nlited xp install disc with the raid drivers integrated jumped right past the part where you get to chose if you wanna access the recovery console and started instead right in the dialogue box where it asks what partition you would like to install windows on. This was where I noticed that my raid array, which was even listed with the correct HDD label, was labeled E:. And then it occurred to me that maybe things had gotten shuffled around and the BIOS wasn't even trying to boot from the array. So I restarted and used the boot menu to force it to boot from the array and voila. Windows booted beautifully back up. I now noticed that windows explorer still listed the stripe array as C:. So I restarted thinking that maybe things had sorted each other out. But upon rebooting I still got the NTLDR missing though I can still boot just fine back into windows by forcing the BIOS to boot from the raid. So, now my question is, how do I get the BIOS to boot from the array. I checked the boot order menu in the bios and it won't let you specify beyond HDD.
  4. Ok, so I dared boot the machine back up and I decided to take a look in the BIOS to see if there was any suspicious settings (not the raid config bios). Turns out that the flashing had set the raid capability to disabled. So I turned it back to enabled and voila, the nvraid utility detected a healthy stripe raid-0 config. Only problem is, NTLDR still comes up as missing. So what should I do next?
  5. It shouldn't happen eh? cause I really would have thought that they'd be smart enough to not let that happen. Anyway, is there an option to rebuild the stripe? I havent checked yet since I didn't wanna do anything untill I had all the facts.
  6. I now have a big problem. I decided to upgrade my bios on my ASUS A8N-E from 1008 to 1013 ( I guess that's really a unlucky number eh?). Point is, I'm also running a raid-0 setup with two seagate drives. Now obviously upgrading the bios will overwrite all my settings, including the raid setup settings. So then it shouldn't really have been a surprise that it came up NTLDR missing seeing as it can no longer detect the raid stuff. I'm currently kicking myself for not thinking ahead. So, anyone have any idea of how I can save my data? I would be extremely gratefull. TIA -Fr33m4n
  7. Ahh, it all makes sense now.
  8. Well, since he says english is not his main language then maybe he is confusing registry keys with files? If so then in rgedit I usually right click on the file and chose delete. If it dosn't work it may have to do with permissions. Right click on a key and chose permissions and chane it so you have full control. Then you should be able to delete it. of course I could be way off here.
  9. uTorrent should be on the list. It's fast and reliable. Dosn't have the good plugins from azureus but still my fav. I also use LimeWire once in a while.
  10. awesome work. I was just wondering though, can you install it by using these arguments? or do you need the registry tweak to register it? Nero7.exe /S /SN=xxxx-...
  11. I found the answer myself. I've been googleing for hours now and I finally found the solution. It was so low tech that I hadn't even bothered checking it. In the tools>options> network menu you have to select what protocols, if any, that you wish to allow wmp to stream over. Turns out they were all un-selected. I just put a mark in the checkboxes and suddenly everything was working as it should.
  12. Ok. I just thought that if you had the file handy it would be very easy for you to just upload it. But I guess it's just as easy for me to do it myself.
  13. Hey thx. That's great. Do you think you perhaps could post your resourcehacked stobject.dll so that it is the win2k file but with the xp icon? I don't much care for the yellow one.
  14. I'm having this small but rather annoying problem. I just can't seem to be able to stream any online media what so ever. Take gamespot fo example. If I try to watch any of the video reviews I get the media player to display but it just sits there and dosn't do anything. Clicking the play button dosn't help eather. However, I can display videos in flash just fine from for example youtube. But that is probably because it relies on a standalone plugin to work. I think the problem lies with windows media player. I think that wmp somehow has been tweaked to not accept any incoming connections. Does anyone have any idea how I might fix this? thx in advance. -Fr33m4n.
  15. I have the same chipset as you and that has allways annoyed me as well. I too would be very interested in a solution.
  16. Heya guys, I'm having a very annoying problem. Do you know that sound windows makes when an app performas an illigal operation or does something bad. That slightly higher pitched 'ploink' type sound. Wll, I get that sound all the time now but I don't have any error messages explaining anything and I don't get any new entries in event viewer every time I hear the sound. I get the sound all the time at irregular intervals wheter I'm using the machine or not. I'm running a fresh copy of winxp pro nLited and updated with ryanvm's pack. I recently installed my audio drivers for my X-Fi card and I got this error message during install: CTRegSur fails to register "C:\Program Files\Creative\Shared Files\WMaWrite.ax" CTRegSur fails to register "C:\Program Files\Creative\Shared Files\Transcode.scm" CTRegSur fails to register "C:\Program Files\Creative\Shared Files\WmaTag.mft" However I'm farily confident that that's not the source of the error because I have removed the drivers and had windows install them itself from the driver cd. I also have KAV and LooknStop installed. help would be grately appriciated, thx in advance.
  17. I'm using vmware workstation v5.5 to test out some new application combinations. Right now I'm testing internet browser settings and as I was browsing around the web I noticed that I was getting extremly slow speeds. Dial-up like speeds really when my dsl connection is 400 kb/s. So I turned off every internet related app and was left with the browser alone but that did not do anything for the speed. I'm pretty sure the problem is with the virtual machine settings because browsing the local machine shared folders is as slow. I have tried changing the network settings from bridged to NAT but it has not helped. any help would be appriciated. thx in advance.
  18. Zxian's is awesome. I wonder how he does that?
  19. After searching the MS KB I have found that in order to invoke the Bluetooth control panel you should go to Start>Run>"bthprops.cpl", however when I do that nothing happens. Is that any help in closing in on the problem? I also found this: Thing is, the bolded part does not exist on my machine. Any thoughts?
  20. I have a diNovo logitech keyboard and it has a bluetooth dock. In the past, that is, on previous installations of XP I have used that dock just fine to syncronize with other bluetooth devices. But now, that I need to transfer some files to my cell phone the **** thing dosn't register. I don't have the bluetooth icon in control panel and if I try the add new hardware wizard it dosn't find it. Also, it is not listed in device manager. So I tried to download and install the logitech drivers (which I haven't needed in the past, but have used successfully previously only to find out that they brake the back button on the mouse so I chose not to use them) and when I try to install those it comes up with a no diveces connected dialogue, which is really strange cause I'm currently using and typing away at the keyboard right now. Anyway, I found another version of the set point drivers which installed just fine but didn't fix the problem. I figure this to be a windows problem because I have used it just fine in the past without having the logitech drivers installed. In fact, I can't even add a bluetooth device manually in the add device wizard. So what do I do now? thx in advance.
  21. All right, I couldn't get MemTest86 to run so I used GoldMemory v6.64 instead. It outputed this: QUICK Test Mode Memory Size 1023 MB Benchmark 2132 MB/s Continuous Testing Pass Count 2 Status Failed Errors 8 (new box) 0:18:49/0 3919F45C (then there was 32 dashes ---where one was replaced by an X, I'll just list the position of the X) X=29 15C34AA2 15C34AAA 00ED 0:34:46/0 30D982A8 X=10 6F2CB725 6F6CB725 00F3 0:37:47/0 391982A8 X=10 2301532E 2341532E 00F4 0:40:26/0 369982A8 X=10 F90A49E4 F94A49E4 00F5 (and so forth) (new box) File Error . . . I'm not entierly sure what all of this means but I think it's pretty clear that I have a memory error. Only thing is, is it a problem in the memory? or is it poor contact between the MB and RAM or is it the RAM channels on the MB that are broken? What should I do next?
  22. thx LLXX, I followed your advice in that other thread, I cleared my dllcache (didn't manage to clear the prefetch folder though) killed explorer and ran this code: expand f:\I386\explorer.ex_ -r c:\windows\ Then I got a mesage saying that it expanded 187%. Unfortunately I don't think it did much and now just recently I experienced a BSOD with this error code in it: Stop: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0x033FE218, 0xF3A15CA8, 0x00000000). So I guess I'm back to square one. I also looked up "Usernv" in the MS KB and found a note saying that the entry was normal and that I shouldn't bother with it.
  23. thx, I fixed the irpstacksize, turns out I didn't even have that value in the registry at all. Now I don't get that error message anymore but explorer is still not behaving nicely, so it's probably the first error message that is the cause of this. For AV I use ZA:SS and I have a canon pixma mp800 printer. How do I determine if any of these are the culprit? @LLXX: I'd like to try your suggestion but I am unsure what parameters to use in cmd once I have rebooted to safe mode with cmd. How do I unpcak something from cmd and where on the xpcd is it located?
  24. Now why didn't I think of that? I think that was really good advice because I found two error messages that kept reappearing regularly but I can't make much sense of them. Does this mean anything to anyone else? and If I try the links I get "no additional information available".
