  1. I don't know about him, but I have had issues with DNC paths right now. I've just got it setup on a home network. So no domain. But it has a hell of a time with UNC paths. If I go to network places it can see all the computers on the local network (192.168.1.x) but it can only connect to about half of them. The rest it just claims it can't find them. Although I can browse to the other ones if I use there IP addresses. It's very annoying since it works just fine in XP but they broke it in vista. Oddly enough all computers vista can't browse to by there name have no trouble browsing to the vista box using it's name.

    Sharing

Just open the start menu and type "network center" You'll then see it on the list. The option to adjust the password settings is on that screen. After he said that, that's all I did to find it. Took a few seconds to find out I was wrong about password settings.

    Sharing

The password are the account passwords. So you'd setup the passwords on the accounts just like in XP. If you don't know where that is it's on the control panel under users. You can manage the users and there passwords from there. As for the "what if there isn't a password" question. Well there has to be a password in order to share, if you've setup an account with no password then it can't be used for sharing. If you want to make things easy on yourself you can simply make an account on the vista PC which is exactly the same as an account on the other PC (same username and password). If you do that then it won't prompt for a password ever (if you are logged into the PC's with that account).
  4. OK I played with it some more and I've figured some thigns out. First of all my half present NIC seems to be an actual error with vista. As I found I can make it appear properly if I uninstall it's driver and reinstall it. Although if I dare rename the NIC away from "Local area connection" I had best not start it's name with an S or else it will half disapear again. Very weird error. Also weird, and I'm not sure if this is an error but It seems to allow you to configure an infinite amount of IPv4 ip's to a single NIC, For example here is my current result of an ipconfig command. 5. I gave it a try last night, and I think it's cool. Although my experience with it is similar to that presentation. It's not quite as bad but it has issues. For example outside of that demo I have yet to be able to get it to open a single program. In fact the only voice command I made it do correctly was open the start menu. I also had quite a bit of trouble with it's demo/training. Had to repeat most thigns at least a few times before it would work. Quite often it only worked after I swore at it or would say "die" which confused me. They need to work together with the dragon natural speaking 9 team. As their voice recognition is almost perfect and works great for me. If that can provide the 99% accuracy dragon natural speaking has into windows then it could actually gain praticle use in computers. Till then this is a step in the right direction but far to annoying for anyone to really use as a way of controlling the entire computer.
  6. Hmmm, that's a similar setup to what I was trying to do. Now if only I could figure out what's going on. I think it has something to do with the compartment stuff. I think my other NIC is in another compartment but I don't really know what that means as this compartment stuff is new in vista.
  7. Did you even look at the image I posted at the bottom of my message? It clearly shows me using ipconfig. Also, when you say "they both work" what do you mean? Have you got them both plugged into a network and doing something? Because merely having two hasn't given me any issues. I've only had issues with trying to use both of them. Using just one is simple.
  8. Thanks spyvie for the suggestion however, I just checked that setting and it's already set to disabled by default for me. Although I'm currently using an nvidia nforce network on board nic to type this. I do have a second Marvell Yukon LAN onboard NIC but I am currently unable to assign it an IP for reasons I have yet to figure out. I shall continue to look into this. I'm still sure it's a vista setting since both XP and knoppix work with both NIC's just fine.
  9. Has anyone here managed to get dual NIC's going with windows vista? So far all I've managed to produce with two NIC's is a lot of really confusing and random errors with vista. Below is an image showing my issues. As you can see in the top window vista clearly see's that I have two NIC's and recognizes them both. It will even happily let me know if one of them is unplugged or not. But if you look at the other two windows you'll notice windows refuses to recognize the second NIC. It only shows the Telus NIC and things associated with it. This leads me to believe the other NIC is deactivated but it's not, as you can see in the top window it's completely active. At one point I thought it was messing things up due to conflicts with two fake IPv6 adatpers so I disabled ipv6 on the second NIC and that didn't seem to help. What's really getting to me is no matter what command I use I can't find the second NIC from the command line. Anyways thanks for reading. Let me know if any of you have had more luck tryign to make two NIC's work. Image
  10. Did you have a point? I'm kind of at a loss as to why you stated this. Was it in reply to me? Or were you replying to someone else? I already knew this. If it was in reply to me then I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I was saying an x300 is better then 2.1 as I can stick a lower end AGP card into the system and get a higher score on graphics then I can with the better PCIe video card.
  11. I'm not sure this calculates everything properly. I mean I have a 5 or greater for everything except graphics which it says is a 2.1 so I get a score of 2.1. The odd thing is I run an x300 PCIe ATI card. Which to be perfectly honest is the cheapest PCIe card I could find on the market and I just threw it in because of that. Also it doesn't lag at all for me. I find it runs quite well with all the extra stuff turned on. So if it displays everything quickly and nicely when I have a graphics score of 2.1 then what the heck does a graphics score of 6 get me that 2.1 doesn't? I half suspect it just has a list of known cards and scores and if you arn't on that list it tries to guess using some basic calculations and sometimes fails.
  12. I don't quite know what's going on. It seems to get worse over time. If I reset the computer and try pining it seems to go pretty good about 60ms to my ISP. But if I let it run for a few hours and then try pinging again it gets worse untill it gets to about 2000ms ping times. Very odd. I won't worry about this too much since it's an RC.
  13. I haven't tried with the latest version but it used to work because the installer starts in windows. While in windows it actually copies the dvd to the HD before the computer ever resets and then it does the rest of the install from the HD. This is the way the installer has always been designed since sometimes detecting cd/dvd drives can be an issue since they require their own drivers (although rare these days MS install system is still built around this principle).
  14. I'm just wondering has anoyone else noticed the internet is much slower in vista? If I ping my ISP while booted into vista RC1 I get ping reply times of 1500ms to 1800ms on average. If I boot into knoppix or windows XP (using the same PC) I get ping reply times of about 80ms on average. I'm assuming it has something to do with all this IPv6 stuff. Naturally I'm not very familiar with it. I can see I have an ipv4 IP and it's working fine, but I also have two ipv6 ip's which confuses me. Perhaps I'm way off blaming ipv6 though. Has anyone else noticed this issue with RC1 yet or is it just me?
  15. How would I go about editing that then? It is a binary file and simply editing it with a plain text editor or hex editor is near impossible. Is there some way to login to the default user account and just make the changes so that all future users use the settings of that account?
  16. No I don't use roaming profiles. As for the .default key I'm not sure what is happening. I suspect that it's not being used since it's on a domain and as such is drawing the information from the domain controller. But os far I've been unable to figure out exactly what I need to change on the DC.
  17. I have a question regarding 1 and 4. 1) I thought this would effect all new accounts made after being added. But I created a new account after adding to the .default and it failed to use the settings I'd placed in .default. Is there anyway to set it up so all future accounts use the default setting I wish for them to use? I realize this won't effect current users. 4) Can you do a registry change with a GPO? Or would this require some sort of hack which runs some other program to do the change?
  18. DHCP is used to assign IP addresses to other computers. Typically you'd do this using a router and not the server OS. Although a server OS can do it you're far better off letting a router do it as that is what it's design for. Doing it with a computer is just a way of saving money by not buying a router, which is generally frowned upon because it's not usually as stable. If you don't use DHCP that means you'd have to go to every single computer in your network individually and personally assign them an IP address. Very boring and a large waste of time. A standard server setup has the server IP's assigned manually to something below the DHCP's range to avoid conflicting IP's. This way all other computers can sort themselves out automaticly and you get the reliablity of always knowing exactly where the server is and you are in complete control of its settings.
  19. What I want to do is edit a key in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\office\etc.... but I can't seem to find a way to do it for all users. At first I thought I could simply go to HKEY_User\.default and make the edit there. That way every time a new account is created it would already have the edit applied. But apparently new users HKEY_CURRENT_USER's keys arn't built off that one like I thought. So in short, I just want to know, is there anyway to edit every exsisting HKEY_CURRENT_USER keys and make it so all future accounts are made with that edit already in place? I thought it was but so far I've failed horribly at finding a solution for this. PS: This should be a one time edit only. ONce the key is changed it should never need to be done again.
  20. If that doesn't help you it's most likely caused by some kinda of virus or malware. You could try scanning for viruses and such, or if you perfer you could try finding the issue yourself by opening up task manager and killing all processes that are run under your name. Keep only explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe. None of the others are needed so simply ending all of them my resolve the issues. If it does you can simply go through more slowly to determine exactly which one is the problem. (Reseting the computer would bring back the processes you just ended)
  21. I'm like a few others here, I don't use Anti-vitus. Once a year or so I tend think I may have done somehting stupid and got a virus and I use something like housecall. Which almost always turns up nothing, and then I realize I just misconfigured an app. As long as you pay attention to what you are doing there really isn't much call for anti virus, it's just a bloated mess that slows a computer down. I've had more problems with nortons antivirus solutions then I've ever had with a virus. Of course, not everyone pays close attention or knows how to pay close attention. I install AVG on computers for friends and family that arn't as computer savy.
  22. I'm just wondering if anyone has made a bundle that includes LAN and HD (mainly SATA) drivers for BartPE and similar products. I'd like to create a CD which could be used on basicly any computer and detect the HD's and NIC's. I realize I could do this by simply using windows 2003 as it includes all the basic drivers. But I'd like to be able to get a windows XP CD to the same state. At any rate if there is someone who makes a bundle which includes drivers for something like this please let me know.
  23. I personally only buy Asus boards. Ever so often I allow myself to slip and buy an MSI board for some cheap workstation, and so far ever time I've gone to MSI the boards been crap and died on me, or caused serious issues. I usually give them a try once a year or so (I mean they keep selling you'd think they'd improve) and MSI boards just keep dieing. ASUS boards work great, never had a problem, any serious computer I build is ALWAYS ASUS.
  24. spazmire is basicly correct. Windows install only offer fat32 as an option is the partition is smaller then 32gigs. Bear in mind, that is partition, not drive. So you could use fat32 with even a 500GB drive. fat32 has some serious issues now though, for example fat32 can not have files bigger then 4GB's and I've seen people have issues with that quite a bit recently and it's only going to get worse. Also a fat32 partition any bigger then 16GB causes it to use 32KB cluster size, which for most people means you'd lose many gigs of storage space if we did this with a 500Gig HD. So in short, fat32 is only usable with small partitions and although you can set it up on bigger ones it's a really bad idea and you're just asking for problems.
  25. MS's JVM isn't supported anymore because java decided to pull the plug on MS and stop them from doing it. At the time it was an issue cause most places that needed a java vm were built with MS's in mind. So it broke a lot of sites. Now most sites have made the minor changes needed to work with sun's version and MS's version hasn't been supported for a year or so now. So really it's a no brianer, go with sun's version. Plus, it's basicly impossible to find MS's version anymore anyways.
