  1. I just wanted to add a few things here. First I'll say, I'd never run 2003 as a workstation, but all the points for why have been made. What I wanted to comment on was the comment some of you made claiming 2003 is more stabile then XP? I've personally never once seen XP crash or BSOD unless it was a HW error. To be fair, viruses like blaster have shut it down, but besides from that I've never seen an XP box crash from software errors (of course 2003 has viruse issues too). Also, I am currently a tech for a small company roughly 100 machines which I take care of right now. About 80% are running XP. So from where I'm standing it's pretty hard to beat that stability. Sure, someone has most likely crashed XP because of something other then a HW error, but it's rare. The guy who compared XP to ME as far as I'm concerned just lost any possible chance of being taken seriously. I realize XP isn't perfect but it's very stabile and compairing it to ME just makes it sound like you've never used it at all. On that note, I have used 2003, and I also haven't seen it crash for anything other then HW errors either. So, as far as I'm concerned they are both pretty **** stabile and moving from one to the other for stability reasons doesn't seem like a good idea.
  2. I don't think there is a 64 bit one just yet. Although I"m not sure, there really wouldn't be a lot of demand. Although you could try checking these two sites. http://www.restuner.com/ http://www.vector.co.jp/authors/VA003525/ (exescope is the name of the res hacker) Both of those site are for two other resource hackers, I'm not sure if they are under development still but chances are it's going to be one of these three groups that ends up releasing a 64 bit resource hacker.
  3. There is no beta right now. You can expect a beta eventually but they are still only on alpha versions and it's still quite buggy. Which is why MS hasn't released it yet, since it has tons of problems. (even more then windows ME right now) Although I find this poll to be sort of silly. I mean granted most people are going to upgrade. You could have asked will your upgrade immediatly. But I mean after a few years the large masses will upgrade cause support getscut from the older OS's anyways.
  4. Sure. 1. Open control panel. 2. Open add remove programs. 3. Select the Add/Remove Windows Component tab on the side. 4. Scroll down till you see IIS (it's the 5th options) and tick the box. If you want to install ftp support and a few other things then click details and select them. 5. Now press next and it will begin installing. It's as easy as that. IIS is only on that list in the pro version and you wll require the windows CD to install it. Once it's installed you can manage it by right clicking my computer and select manage. It will be under services and applications.

    tcpip.sys ? ?

If you don't know what concurrent connections means then you don't need it. All it means is more then one person can be logged in and doing stuff on the computer at the exact same time. The way this is done is one person would be physcially at the computer using it normally. The other person would then be using remote desktop to term in and use the computer themselves. Normally when someone logs in remotely it will boot the other user. As it only allows one person at a time. The concurrent sessions are usually only used with server OS's. Although some users may share a computer and thus have use for it at home as well.

    tcpip.sys ? ?

All you really have to do is replace tcpip.sys with the one downloaded from this site and you're done. Of course the cache is unless WFP is disabled it will simply delete the hacked version and replace the old version after a few seconds. So make sure you disable WFP first. The info for doing that is in the sticky at the top of this thread as well.
  7. Hey, thanks man. That is exactly what I was looking for. Feel a little stupid for not being able to find it myself though. Thanks again.
  8. Does anyone know how you can get rid of the windows security alert icon if you don't turn on automatic updates? I don't want ot get into it but I don't want to turn on windows update on a certain machine. Of course if I don't you got this stupid annoying windows securit alert sitting beside the clock that just won't go away. So does anyone know how to make it leave the clock. In effect I don't need to security center to work at all. I mean sure the firewall can run and antivirus can run but I don't need windows to tell me what they're doing. If I wanna know I can go and check myself. I just want to get this thing out of my system tray.
  9. Have you tried using version 4.5.1 of VM ware instead of 4.0? Because I've never had a problem with it in 4.5 so I'm sort of assming your problems were resolved in the newer version. Edit: I just checked vmware official site even says they fixed that problem in 4.5. You need to upgrade.
  10. What driver is the NIC using in 4074 for you? Because for me it says there is a conflict but longhorn doesn't expand. It just says conflict. Doesn't even say if it's an IRQ port or anything. Did VMware require any special settings besides selecting NAT for you to get it to work?
  11. I am using bridged right now and i'm not having much luck. When i use bridged does htat mean I install the real NIC's drivers? or the emulated drivers? As for getting it going in vmware, well it went in just fine for me. It has a minor issue with resetting. Every time it resets when it tries to do something you get some really long error message from vmware which isn't in english. Of course if you just power it down and back on it will load up again just fine. So it's not really a problem. Just never reset. Always do a full power down and then turn it back on. I never did try 4053 in vmware, but I have a feeling if you updated vmware to version 4.5 instead of 4.0 you might have more luck.
  12. It's actually highly recommended that you don't run longhorn as your main OS due to problems. Everyone knows of the memory leak in longhorn, it should be gone in the final version but for now it's there and you arn't getting rid of it. As for your problem with the main taskbar well that one is fixed in the more recent build of 4074. IN 4053 the main taskbar also has a pretty nasty memory leak. Disabling the sidebar helps but running for prolonged periods of time isn't a good idea. If you really want to use longhorn your best bet is to get the newer build.
  13. I was just recently using virtual PC to run longhorn and I did manage to get it working but it ran horribly slow, so now i'm trying vmware cause I heard it was faster. Anyways, I got vmware running longhorn. It is MUCH faster in vmware. On the downside though I have been unable to get longhorn to install the NIC and have it work when inside VMware. So I'm just wondering if anyone knows hwo to make longhorn use the NIC when using vmware. I'm using vmware 4.5.1 and longhorn 4074.
  14. I don't know how hard you looked but Kazaa entirely supports uploading files from other directorys and with a default install will scan for other media to share and share it automaticly. ANd although kazaa may have many faults this is not something they hide from the user at all. It is very well broadcast to you when installing and when it is searching for other media. As for the actually problems with his computer, it could be he downloaded a virus off of kazaa, but kazaa didn't just do anything itself. You really shouldn't ever download an executable file off kazaa as there are a lot of viruses. Also as for sharing out other files on the computer simply go under options and click "find media to share". From there you control which folders are shared out. It's almost the only thing it has under options I really have no idea how you missed it.
  15. There is no patch for it. What you can do though is disable the sidebar entirely. That will pretty much stop the memory leakage and explorer should stay around 50 megs. The sidebar just isn't fixed yet and if you want to have it on you'll have to reset the computer every couple hours.
  16. Thanks for the help gamehead200. I installed that driver and everything works great now. Also since you asked, I never installed the virtual Machine additions, they arn't needed at all.
  17. Did anyone manage to find a video driver which you can install in virtual PC when using longhorn 4074 that actually allows you to get out of 4-bit mode and at least 800x600 res? I've been looking all day but so far I haven't managed to find a driver longhorn will take.
  18. It's too be expected that they removed them. My only real question is did they actually remove support for them? Because quite honestly I don't care about the wizard at all. It's pretty much useless and anyone who could handle any of those OS's could easily set it up without a wizard. SO basicly i'm perfectly happy if they still work. If they actually edited the code so that the other OS's dont' work then there is simply no hope of me ever using MS's version. My main use for Virtual PC is for running linux when i'm too lazy to reboot into a true linux mode.
  19. You are a little off. This setting is only an alternate setting. If it is unable to use the primary Windows XP will attempt to use these alternate settings. This does not in any way allow you to set multiple IPs on one NIC. This is what I thought .... I do not think it is posible to assign two IP numbers to one NIC card. Or am I wrong? UI - Actually guys you should look closer as wicked explained it perfectly well and it does work just fine. I now have two ips and my problems are solved. Do not select the alternate tab instead press the advanced button. On the first screen that comes up you can add additional ip's to the top most box. Like he said if DHCP is enabled you will not be able to add new ip's. Also to disable DHCP you must close that window and then define all the info on the tcp/ip screen manually. If you do that then you can add extra ips. It works 100% for me. No problems. ALthough I should note i've only looked using winXP Pro. I have no idea if other versions of windows support this. It's been less then 24 hours since i've gotten it working myself.
  20. Nah, lan traffic doesn't count towards internet traffic at all. It would have to go out through to the isp and if it did that then it would of course go much slower then 100mbit/sec. Plus my bandwidth usage would be up into at least 500gigs a month if lan traffic counted. At any rate guys thanks for the help/suggestions i'm giving a few things a try hopefully I can have this fixed up soon.
  21. Is it possible on a windows XP machine to have more then one IP on a single nic? Currently i have 6 computers in my home and they all have internet ip's and connect directly to the internet. (Not all computers I mine personnally some belong to brothers or are servers an such). Now I like this setup but the problem is setting up the LAN to work using this ip's seems to be a big pain in the a** so what i'd really like to be able to do is keep my internet ips but also assign each computer a 192.168.*.* ip just for LAN usuage. Is this possible to do with only one nic? I know unix can do it but I can't seem to find a way on windows and yet I seem to recall hearing it is possible The only thing I really tried was to install the card a second time but it won't let me do that. If anyone can help i'd greatly appreciate it.
