  4. if the computer you want to access from the outside world is 192.168.1.3 for example then look in your router config and forward traffic destined for port 3389 to 192.168.1.3 and remote desktop should work as for the ip you actually use to connect to your home network put in your external ip (if you dont know it go to www.showmyip.com) thanks hope it helps

  13. i noticed after installing sp1 my windows was crappy.. a few fixes later it was great same with service pack 2, install it and update fully and i believe that you will have the best most stable windows there is providing your hardware is up to it of course

  19. dont worry about this iv found it i overlooked an option called "update classifications", it lets you specifiy what to download, one of the things being service packs lol thanks anyway
  20. hi all iv read many articles on the net about this, they all mention bandwith throttling through BITS but none actually mention how to deploy the service packs. atm i have a win2k wsus server setup, deploying hotfixes with no problems, i have a windows xp test machine with service pack 1 on it, and wish to deploy service pack 2 to it. i have downloaded sp2 but need a bit of guidance as to what to do next could anyone help me please? thank you
  21. personally i would run both with wep, turn of the SSID broadcast, enable MAC filtering and use static address, i really cant see anyone being able to get through that without pure determination
  22. if i remember correctly when you enable ICS it gives the computer acting as the gateway 192.168.1.1 so if you could change the ip of the router to 192.168.1.2 and give the other pcs static address i dont see why it wouldnt work although you will have to tell the laptop that its a computer to computer network (i.e Ad-hoc) as someone mentioned earlier, or maybe the laptop will see the usb as an access point.. who knows? let us know how you get on with this good luck
  23. ok assuming you have a bit of knowledge on DNS here goes.. primary lookup zone would be were a server would look for the A records that map a clients host name to its ip address. it would be used if you were in an enterprise situation and you wanted to access your exchange server for example and its host name is "exchange2k3" if you opened up remote desktop and typed in "exchange2k3" the query would go to the dns server which would look in its forward lookup zone for the A record that maps that name to whatever ip it is and connect u to the exchange server reverse is the opposite and is used to ip address to names using PTR records, the point of this being (mainly on the net) to verify senders of emails (ie you recieve a mail and the hostname it claims to be from has a reverse lookup done on it and if the ip is the same as what it came from then you know it legitimate) honestly mate DNS is simple to understand what its doing, but when it comes to how its doing it it can be really mind boggling, if you can get at a win2k or 2k3 server and check the dns console in that you may get a better understanding but other than that there is a nice 1000 -odd page book by o'reilly on dns it really does get complicated hope this helps, it may not be 100% accurate but at least you get the idea good luck with it
  24. post your cmdlines.txt and your runonce and maybe we can help
  25. its possible that the ip is part of an ISP's subnet and isnt actually being used by one of their customers, you wouldnt be able to ping it but you would be able to tracert it upto the subnet its contained on.. i think either that or that ip is not responding to ICMP packets, hence you not being able to ping it
