Connecting a Windows 98 and Windows 7 through a network
PROBLEMCHYLD replied to KelvinTwister's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Its strange how Win 7 networking is. I guess there is no right or wrong way to get it working. I'm hoping to come up with an easy overall solution. I hate that we can't use Network Neighborhood for browsing. Maybe some hack can fix this issue. -
@ tomasz86 Do you have a complete list of files from MDAC 2.82 (2.8 SP2) from Win2003?
-
Thanks, I have already added the file in the last release. Have you tried XPSP1 +XPSP2 versions? You can always try my method, starting from the highest versions, working your way backwards. I know it might be a little time consuming but it works.

Connecting a Windows 98 and Windows 7 through a network
PROBLEMCHYLD replied to KelvinTwister's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I can confirm DSCLIENT is needed if you are NOT using U98SESP3.x. I have tested this with and without SP3.x. SP3.x installs the same updated files as DSCLIENT except for the Active Directory files. -
Connecting a Windows 98 and Windows 7 through a network
PROBLEMCHYLD replied to KelvinTwister's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I agree, thats why most of your instructions was used. I was not able to connect until I added the registry key. See if you have the key on your Win98 machine and if you do delete it and try to connect again.REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA] "LMCompatibility"=dword:00000003 ; -
But then what about DBGENG.DLL 5.1.2430.1? This means we couldn't use the new DBGHELP.DLL 6.8.4.0 which IMO serves no purpose with only DBGENG.DLL 5.1.2430.1 IMAGEHLP.DLL 5.1.2430.1 or am I missing something? Or should I avoid using DBGENG.DLL 5.1.2430.1 altogether? I do have the following running on a test machine now DBGHELP.DLL 5.1.2430.1 DBGENG.DLL 5.1.2430.1 IMAGEHLP.DLL 5.1.2430.1
-
The version IMAGEHLP.DLL 5.00.2178.1 is from Win ME and Drugwash is right. The Win ME versions has 99 export functions and the Win XP Beta cersion has 111 export functions. The Win XP Beta files are depended of each others while the others are not. I use the tool DLL Export Viewer v1.60 in case you were wondering
-
Thanks Drugwash and tomasz86. What do you SP users think about me adding this registry key REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA] "LMCompatibility"=dword:00000003 ;It is essential to Win98 networking. It applies to any operating system that uses NTLM security. It will not break anything on the system. The reason I'm asking is because everyone don't have a network. Just to have it there is good incase needed in the future.

Connecting a Windows 98 and Windows 7 through a network

DSCLIENT.EXE Active Directory Client Extension is needed if not using SP but Client for Microsoft Networks is not needed for this procedure. You may use Client for Microsoft Networks if it suits you. To each their own 1. You want to have an Administrator account with a Password on the Win 7 computer. 2. You want to make sure all sharing options are enabled. Depending on what you are sharing, use your own discretion. Right-click the folder you want to share. Click Properties --> Sharing --> Advanced Sharing. Put a check mark on Share this folder. Click Permissions and set to your likings. Click Apply --> OK ---> Apply --> OK ---> Close. 3. From the run box type SECPOL.MSC. In the Local Security Policy --> Security Options --> Network security: Lan Manager authentication level --> set to whatever security level suits you. There is no need to change registry values because once you change the security in Network security: Lan Manager authentication level, it is automatically changed in the registry. 4. On a Win98 machine, create a new user account with the same user name and password that is created on the Win 7 Administrator account. The Primary Network Logon does not matter. 5. Add this registry key, because without it, you will not be able to connect to Win 7. Reboot! REGEDIT4[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA]"LMCompatibility"=dword:00000003;6. Log-in to the new account you just created. 7. Network Neighborhood is not an option. In Windows Explorer, navigate to the desired shared folder on the Win 7 machine. Example: \\Win 7 Computer name\The folder you to access \\JohnDoe\Music If someone can come up with a better way to explain these instructions incase I didn't simplify please do so. I will ask a mod to remove my post if someone decides to do it. Yes you can -
Connecting a Windows 98 and Windows 7 through a network
PROBLEMCHYLD replied to KelvinTwister's topic in Windows 9x/ME
This is not mandatory. I used Client for Microsoft Networks and Windows Logon and they both worked. Both directions was working for me. I even had Win 7 set to Send NTLMv2 response only. Refuse LM & NTLM and it was still working in both directions. I'm about to post the instrcutions. I was testing, making sure I got everything correct before I post. I don't want to give people the wrong instructions or information. @ submix8c, most of your instructions is needed so to you. -
Connecting a Windows 98 and Windows 7 through a network
PROBLEMCHYLD replied to KelvinTwister's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Google is your friend. Its has all the answers, even if a lot of them are wrong. Just kidding I'll post step by step instructions later. -
Thanks, but the WinXP Beta version lacks a lot more functions than the newer versions after compared. I would assume Microsoft removed those functions because they were not needed or superceded by newer functions. Also, if I use a newer version, I don't need to add DBGENG.DLL 5.1.2430.1 because the newer files is not depended on the others. Thanks again. I'll be testing DBGHELP.DLL 6.8.4.0. This version seems to be the last one working for Win98.

Connecting a Windows 98 and Windows 7 through a network

I can't seem to get it working. Need some help. I keep getting [You must supply a password to make this connection] -
The first thing I do is a clean install. After that, I register files whether its needed or not. This way I see if any new keys are added or if there is any corruption. I then test windows only apps [NOT ALL] because I use 98lite. If all apps are working, no memory leaks, no pop ups, no resource leaks etc... the list goes on.......... I then start adding the software I use. If I don't find any problems within a week or so, I'll call it Golden As I said earlier, I might overlook things. This is when the testers come in. This is one of the reason I don't use it. Its like a bad virus scanner that gives a lot of false positives. I already I have this included. I'll test the other files and see how they go. Thank you very much for your input.

As I said before, it applies to followers. Now, regardless if a file breaks or enhances things, I prefer to use the latest COMPATIBLE version. I feel, if the newer files didn't serve a purpose, then they wouldn't have been created in the first place. Thanks, but I already have that version. I was looking for any newer compatible versions with the most functions.I have my own way of testing files, here is my method. I start from the highest version working my way backwards since most newer files provide more functions and may break things. This is why we have testers to help find any flaws with newer versions. Sometimes I miss things that others catch. If anyone has newer builds of DBGHELP.DLL, please list your version.
-
Thanks for the link It only applies to followers, and I'm not a follower, I'm a leader. Thanks for trying

Um.....Something called software?????? The older version doesn't give me any problems. I just thought I would test newer versions. I haven't found the file in any packages besides the debugging tools which is huge to download, for one file. I guess I'll stick with the 6.0 version since no one can give me more overall input on this file. I would hope someone can answer my original question instead of asking me another one which is not an answer
-
I guess I'm not sure what version should be used?????? I also don't want to download all those debugging packages just to test one file. So if anyone knows the best version to use, it would really be helpful.

I just installed Windows 7 for the first time the other day. Can anyone tell me why I have 12GB [of who knows what] with all updates included? This is not even including the apps I haven't installed yet. I have hundreds of things I don't even use. WTF is wrong with Microsucks. If I had not found this thread, I was about the strip this $h!+ of my computer. I'm sorry, but this is why I don't upgrade like everyone else. I had to for job reasons.

File modified date problem in makecab.exe 5.1.2600.5512
PROBLEMCHYLD replied to Explorer09's topic in HFSLIP
Is it possible to patch the MAKECAB.EXE 5.1.2600.5512 to avoid this bug? The Win XP SP3 version has better compression. -
Thanks guys @ jaclaz - You'll have to eventually retire sooner or later
