  1. A system along those lines was already mentioned in post 33. I guess this topic will never die, someone wakes it up once a year.
  2. You could use 'Reg query' it all depends upon how you are wanting to use the value info.
  3. You will have to determine what the desired drive letter is during the install and have that vaule in the winnt.sif file.
  4. You do realize that this has been dormant for four months right? How about this list: http://www.msfn.org/board/Disk-Imaging-Software-t100299.html
  5. You may run into one snag depending upon the age of your old system and the configuration of the new. If the old drive is an IDE drive you may find that you do not have an IDE connection in your new machine unless you specifically ordered a machine with one. Most machines are now coming with SATA drive only. If this is the case you can get an SATA->IDE adapter, or you can get an external adapter to connect the drive to a usb or firewire port either permanently or temporarily.
  6. check for an autorun file on the hard drives. delete them if found.
  7. Portable Firefox works in PE2. http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable
  8. It will always find a new USB device when deploying a new image, doesn't matter if it is the same port or not. Especially if you have syspreped the image. If you get two in the printers folder try installing the printer, so that the drivers are in the image but then delete the printer from the printers folder. But leave the drivers behind if it asks if you want to delete it. Then image and deploy and see if it works.
  9. huh?
  10. Well the underwear were removed from the camera this morning, and there is better lighting and a better view. Still no movement, actually this looks like a trash can witha water bottle attached to the side. I think the earlier suggestion of a way to poke the gerbil should it exist might be a good one. Or maybe a shock pad on the bottom then we could at least make 'em jump a little.
  11. Funny, in the seven years I spent as a hardware service technician I have replaced every conceivable external connector on a motherboard, except for the d-sub type connectors. USB ports are not that much stronger than the power ports. Though you usually lose the center guide plate instead of the whole port, still unusable. RJ-11/45 are nothing more than plastic and those little tiny corners that the clip is held behind break fairly easily also. And yes I have seen laptops that multiple connectors were broken in a single drop, due to the cord being stretched across the room and the roommate not paying attention walks through it and brings everything crashing to the floor, or out of the loft. But that having been said, nice idea. Market it to universities you'll get your money back in the first semester. I still prefer the magnetic held power connector though. P.S. Those seven years were spent working for a service center at a university. No your normal person would not do this in general, but students they will do anything you can think of to a machine. Including using three as urinals over the course of their school career.
  12. Great so instead of paying $200 to replace the power connector they can pay $200 to replace the USB/Modem/Network/Serial/Parallel/etc port instead. This is what accidental damage protection warranties are for. And they cover the screen for breakage too when the laptop land screen corner first into the floor.
  13. "Minimum" config. Reduce the hardware configuration to the minimum number of components required to boot. I.E. Motherboard, processor, 1-2 stick(s) of memory, video, hard drive, keyboard.
  14. 5:50pm gerbil time - apparently wanted some privacy, looks like underwear was thrown over the camera, must have had significant other gerbil over for a rendezvous.
  15. @geemail - what is described here is beyond what you really require for the tasks you mention. All you need is a standard PE 2 image and the scripts/ apps to create the account and then image the machine. To create a basic PE 2 image check out http://www.msfn.org/board/GUIDE-Creating-W...nt-t101383.html
  16. That's beyond sad, apparently asleep right now.
  17. Could be a hardware problem if you can't boot from any cd. might try reducing machine to minimum config and see what happens then when booting from hard drive of cd.
  18. Still working on this. It is slow going when you have other projects to work on at the same time. If someone wants to take on that challenge and send th list to me I will add that info to the first post.
  19. there is an option the reset the activation through sysprep.
  20. Depends upon the license the customer will have. Or the license your school has.
  21. Don't support imagex in WinPE 2? News to me, works just fine and the method to put imagex in a PE 2 image is included on Microsoft's website and is demonstrated in their Vista, Office 2007 deployment class. see sticky here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=101383
  22. If you clone the OS then yes you can use the same profile as long as you are not resetting SIDs. If you are installing seperately or syspreping when imaging then it won't work that way.
  23. Or that the user was visiting a porn site. Time to start stocking up on rolls of aluminum foil.
  24. Yes you can use the same D&S folder for multiple OSes, but they will not share a profile with the same name. if you have the same account in OS1 (john) as in OS2 (john) you will find multiple folders in D&S, john and john.os2.
  25. Two other possibilities for deletion. 1. Boot from PE (type you pick) and delete the file offline of the installed OS. 2. XP Pro Only - turn off simple file sharing. set permissions on the offending folder so that NO user has access to it in any way, so no users will be listed. Reboot system, add just the logged on user to have full permission to the folder and then delete. The idea being that if no one has rights the executables can be executed then when you add permissions nothing inside will be in use and the folder can be deleted.
