Here's an interesting article I came across that gives an overview of how the idiots designed Windows 8: Windows 8: The Boldest, Biggest Redesign In Microsoft's History Their only goal is to keep the company "relevant" against Apple, with no consideration for doing the right thing. It also reinforces my belief that a few idiots at Microsoft - Ballmer, Sinofsky, Julie Larson Green, Sam Moreau and a bunch of clueless UX people are responsible for the utter destruction of Windows. May these people not go to heaven when they die for torturing souls on earth. And here's another one (albeit an year older): Meet The People Behind Microsoft's Last-Ditch Effort To Save Windows that's a testimony to Steven Sinofsky's arrogance. As the article says Gates once allegedly said "We can't tell Steven what to do." And here's a third article that couldn't be more wrong: The iPhone 5 forecast: a predictable 73 degrees and sunny that actually slams iPhone 5 for making incremental improvements and not making stupid radical and bold gimmicky changes for no reason and which yield nothing but frustration and lost features. He also lives in parallel world where he thinks Vista failed for not making bold changes.

Yeah I saw it popup on the MS Download Center the next day. I ranted about it on Twitter or maybe it was just a coincidence that I decided to download ABE on the one single day it was missing. If anyone wants any deleted file/download from MS Download Center, feel free to contact me via PM because I downloaded it almost entirely till 2006. Btw this URL: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/search.aspx?q=&p=1&r=50&t=22441&s=availabledate~Descending works nicely to list ALL downloads by date in descending order.

Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 20
xpclient replied to Ascii2's topic in Microsoft Office
If you install in reverse order (that is, higher KB number first), then many older updates may already be superseded. -
OMG! Tihiy you are a genius! AutoPlay is back in the same window!!! If only the Open With window can also be brought back. Edit: Oh dear! It's the same window as you pointed out. Then Windows 7 for me.

Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 20
xpclient replied to Ascii2's topic in Microsoft Office
From my list so far they are KB2596754, KB2596785, KB2596843 KB2596789 and KB2597162. -
I found it via Internet archive and removing the check in the MSI via Orca makes it work on NT6 too (including the evil oversimplified Windows 8).

The B@#$%^&S removed the download for Access Based Enumeration (ABE) GUI for Windows Server 2003! Deleting older downloads!!! TIME TO PANIC if you haven't downloaded ALL.

Slipstream Office 97 SR-1 into an...
xpclient replied to Philster's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Years late but answer to both question. SR-1 cannot be integrated into RTM Office 97 administrative install but MS produced a special SR-1 integrated version media that I own if anyone's interested. Not here of course, as that will be warez but outside of MSFN. And if you have SR-1 integrated Office 97, SR-2 is slipstreamable. I integrated SR-2 into it and now I have directly SR-2 integrated Office 97!! -
I JUST CANNOT TOLERATE THAT PARROT! HE IS JUST UNBEARABLE. THIS SAME PARROT WAS CRITICIZING VISTA MORE, WHEN IT WAS QUITE SPECTACULAR IF YOU COMPARE IT TO WINDOWS 8. HE'S WORSE THAN A SHILL, HE'S REALLY HEAD FANBOY IN CHARGE. ALL THE OTHER AT FANBOY CENTRAL FOLLOW HIM.

Impossible to get Flip 3D back compared to the useless Win+Tab switcher which is just a vertical version of Alt-Tab?
-
Yes it's better to just disable it by running smartscreensettings.exe and then turn off the Action Center nags as well. Maybe IE smartscreen was useful for general browsing protection, but it's addition to IE's download reputation building which scares users by classifying genuine downloads as potentially malicious or directly in Windows which sends file names in encoded form to MS is overly intrusive of privacy.

After you uninstall Primary or Secondary IDE Controller in Device Manager, reboot and let it redetect it, also add this reg tweak and it won't fall back to PIO mode repeatedly. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0001] "ResetErrorCountersOnSuccess"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0002] "ResetErrorCountersOnSuccess"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0003] "ResetErrorCountersOnSuccess"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0004] "ResetErrorCountersOnSuccess"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0005] "ResetErrorCountersOnSuccess"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0006] "ResetErrorCountersOnSuccess"=dword:00000001 But of course if drive is failing, this won't magically save it or speed it up.

http://stardock.com/products/start8/ I am already getting heart attacks unless fans reassure me that Classic Shell is still the best. I still believe it is but I am not sure others see it that way so I have entered depression. Start8 has file search (although crappily done), jump lists, ability to launch Metro apps and highlighting of new programs. And Start8 shows Windows' MRU list of programs, not its own. I envy it!

I have uploaded my own collection of Office 2000 post SP3 hotfixes which includes all non-security hotfixes by request (HBR). It includes security updates in the root of the folder, and other stuff (non-security hotfixes, CD3 updates in other folders). I believe it will update everyone's Office 2000 to newest file version builds. I also have newest HBR for Office XP post SP3 and Office 97 post SP2 if anyone wants. Download it here: Office 2000 Post SP3 updates (I upped it to 4shared but apparently, it also requires sign up/sign in for larger files) Do MSFNer have any file sharing service to recommend which doesn't delete files and doesn't require any client to upload? Edit: Dropbox link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/c47ngtkmhy7ayua/Off2000PostSP3.zip

There will definitely be at least an SP2 for Windows 7, although there may not be an SP3. I wish for a Vista SP3 more than Windows 7 SP2 at this moment. The new evil Msft only supports an OS depending on how well it succeeds or fails. Vista didn't deserve this.

Win XP past Apr 2014... (was: Will XP be supported until 2019?)
xpclient replied to steveothehighlander's topic in Windows XP
As far as I understand, updates for Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 are the same ones produced *for* Windows XP Professional. Or am I mistaken? Are separate updates produced for Windows Embedded POSReady 2009? It means if Microsoft decides to not produce security updates post April 2014 for Windows XP Professional, there is no advantage to "extended support" that Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 receives. Technical support incidents will be covered but no hotfixes to patch vulnerabilities will be created. Can anyone show me proof that updates for Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 are different and distinct from Windows XP Professional? The only distinct updates released for Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 are for the write filter and registry filter components. What this however opens up is a possibility that Microsoft will make available security updates to custom support agreement holders till 2019. -
I only do English language computing, so I downloaded only English download center. No disrespect but saves me a ton of headaches of partial English, partial translated stuff.

If it's a Gigabit ethernet adapter, try turning off Jumbo frames (although they're good) if your network doesn't support them from the NIC's Properties in Device Manager. Try changing connection speed and specify gateway so connection is "Identified".
-
Just want to say again Tihiy that you're doing excellent and genius work.
-
I downloaded the entire MS download center from 1995 to 2006 some years back. Still have to download from 2006 to current.
-
Exactly. MS, I want all my removed Windows 7 features back. Period.

You could try Skip Metro Suite (http://winaero.com/comment.php?comment.news.103) which is in my experience, the fastest at showing the desktop, even faster than Classic Shell or Start8. If you use autologon, the desktop shows for me just as the startup sound is playing. No trace of the Tiles.
