Name a SIGNIFICANT/MAJOR enhancement/improvement/solid addition to Windows after Windows 8.1.
-
@mina7601Oh yes I like those 2 improvements very much. The pink around the text cursor indicator and being able to enlarge the cursor. They even ship some SVG mouse cursors by default. But the icon/bitmap-based get pixelated when enlarged to even 2x.

@mina7601 Interesting. I tried it out. Anything it can do extra or better than a typical virtual machine can't? I mean any advantages of it over a VM?

I promise, I'll keep using Windows 7 for a long time. The last true desktop Windows, and I only have a desktop. Do we have any other survivors here?

Does anybody remember those days when it actually made sense to use IE as a daily web browser?
They are never going to come back...... IE is going to be killed off completely few months later...-
The one thing I miss from IE is the RSS feed sidebar. I wish Edgium or Chrome had it, although I found a nice web extension as an alternative: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/rss-feed-reader/pnjaodmkngahhkoihejjehlcdlnohgmp

Back when I tried Mint with Xfce, this was as close to Windows as I could get it. But not a single desktop environment with folders as cascading menus+search, and a case sensitive file system were deal-breakers that made me switch back to Windows.

Do MSFNers use Windows 10 with updates enabled?

I am offended that I was born at the wrong moment and at the wrong time. I want to see the internet from 2005-2009, I don't want to see the current situation with the unnecessary staff and dull interface. I want to see the complete openness of people on the Internet and their kindness to me. I want to see how Windows was made lovingly and stable, not 10, which is filled with surveillance and unnecessary services. I want to see the past of the internet and what it was like.
-
Thankfully I was born in 1984 and was 10-11 years old when the revolutionary Windows 95 arrived. Experienced the peak glory of Windows in my youth - 3.0, 95, NT4, 98, 98 SE, 2000, Me, the legendary XP, Vista, 7, 8.1. You can experience the classic versions in a Virtual Machine. If you want to know anything, feel free to ask me privately.

I hate when people use that responsive web design with some heavy java script on their websites..
-
The web is pretty much unusable (horrible design) and slow due to excessive (ab)use of JavaScript. Disabling JS breaks a huge number of sites unlike Web 1.0 days. Awful comment systems like Disqus, the excessive use of JS on YouTube are some examples that come to mind.
Besides uBlock Origin, I can recommend this addon to reduce pop-ups on the web: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/popupoff-popup-and-overla/ifnkdbpmgkdbfklnbfidaackdenlmhgh

Is it me, or lots of people think that WiFi == Internet?
-
The web is anything but innovative. Once one site comes up with an idea, the rest follow like sheep and copy it. How is it innovative when all sites look and feel the same?
-
Stupid JavaScript is to blame for the awful web experience. Facebook, Twitter, all the dozens of tech news sites, any sites which use s*** like Disqus - they're all so slow and annoying to navigate.
The tech industry and the web are based on a template. A few people innovate and the rest of them are apes - they copy it.

Tweaking Win 10 into tameness is a losing game. It's much better to keep on any previous version till MS wakes up, and gets real...

Windows 10 is the most painful, most unpleasant, disturbing, upsetting, substance-lacking release of Windows ever.
-
I am not part of the rat race. I strongly oppose "upgrading" for the sake of it. I evaluate every release extremely thoroughly and I am happily running Windows XP - the last OS where everything from previous releases for the most part was included without any major break in compatibility. In fact I inspect features and the value of "upgrading" so thoroughly that I wrote:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_features_removed_in_Windows_Vista
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_features_removed_in_Windows_7 and worked with Ivo Beltchev to create Classic Shell.
http://xpwasmyidea.blogspot.com/2011/09/features-removed-in-windows-8.html
On my laptop, I run Windows 8.1 because it has:
- TRIM for the PCIe M.2 SSD that's on the laptop (Windows 7 only supports SATA TRIM)
- Windows 8.1 works with well the "PreferExternalManifest" Registry setting which I need to set to fix the DPI scaling of certain apps on that high resolution, high DPI display. (More details here: http://winaero.com/blog/how-to-fix-apps-that-look-small-on-high-dpi-and-high-resolution-displays/) On Windows 7, it breaks the Network icon.
- The DPI scaling engine in Windows 8.1 loads earlier at startup to scale everything correctly whereas on Windows 7 it doesn't scale apps that run at startup
- The awfulness of the Windows 8 UI and regressions and lack of customizability can be fixed by using third party apps like Classic Shell, 7+ Taskbar Tweaker, OldNewExplorer, FileSearchEX, Everything Search, Media Player Classic Home Cinema, PerigeeCopy, VistaSwitcher and putting back Gadgets, classic games and the old superior Task Manager.
- Much improved DISM and cleanup of superseded updates
I am only evaluating Windows 10. I have NO intention of moving to it for the next 100 years. It is the worst piece of garbage to ever ship from Redmond.

Besides Start Menu and Aero Glass, what do you miss in the crappy Windows 8 over Windows 7?

What will happen to us poor Windows power users if its future is going to be "simplified"? Forced to move to Linux?
-
It just kills me how a lot of people 'accept' Windows 8's removed features, especially the start menu. You guys are happy paying money for a 'new' version of Windows when the previous version had more useful stuff in it than the new one? Did Microsoft lose sight of what a computer is really meant for, specifically getting things done in a timely fashion? It's stupid how people are all "Oh my god!!! It's paving the way to the future! Accept it...

I can't wait to wear my new Windows 8 t-shirt out in public.

Has anyone else noticed that when companies run out of new ideas, they just make their new product 'shiner' and possibly add a small feature and yet people have to quickly run out and buy it because it's 'new'? Do I need Windows 8? Absolutely not. Windows 2000, with the help of blackwingcat and tomasz86, still serves my computing needs perfectly. I do not need to pay an extra $100+ for stupid looking menus and a new ribbon interface. Seriously?? You call Windows 8 new...
