Problems with Winnt.sif not being properly used
Skyfrog replied to DarkPhoenix's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Here is mine if it helps any. It is fully unattended and I always copy it to a floppy disk for setup to find instead of burning it to the CD (so I can make changes to it or choose not to use it). -
They probably want to make sure there are no compatibility problems with Duke Nukem Forever.

I like Everest, but there is also one called Belarc Advisor which is good for seeing what versions of software and patches are installed on your machine. It opens the results as an html page in your browser. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Zip files listed as "folders" on 2003
Skyfrog replied to MerlinTheWizard's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
I find this annoying also; fortunately it's rather easy to disable it. (1) Go to Start, Run, and type regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll (2) To disable the feature for cab files also type regsvr32 /u cabview.dll (3) Install WinRAR or whichever program you prefer and associate zip files with it. If for some reason you wish to re-enable this feature just run the commands again without the /u. -
They could sell it of course, but they won't because it would only hurt them. Trying to support Windows is a big enough task, but throw in Linux and having to support all the grannies using it would be a nightmare. Besides they want Windows to dominate, and I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that they want Linux dead. Besides it wouldn't be a good idea in my opinion for them to sell Linux. I don't really think they need to; they have years of work in Windows, and NT is a very good product. My opinions of course, but I think we'll meet up with Vulcans before Microsoft starts selling Linux.

Not to me; why would Microsoft want to encourage people to use Linux?

Aren't LCDs also fixed resolution? Meaning you are stuck playing your games at that resolution. Also if your LCD runs at 1024x768 and you have a game that only runs at 800x600, you will have to play it in a window with black borders all around it.

Aside from the destroyed CDs I never liked those drives anyway. They are just way too loud; I have seen a few that cause the whole desk to vibrate. I would rather have a slower drive that is quiet and reads disks more reliably; you can barely hear my LG DVD-ROM running.
-
In those cases just use the 8.3 name, like this: MOVE deadAIM.ocm c:\Progra~1\AIM\
-
Certainly, even if you can't find 12x media right now you'll be able to eventually. In the meantime it will still burn at slower speeds (whatever your media supports). http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#4.3 http://netforbeginners.about.com/cs/multim...explained_2.htm

You might also want to consider an ATI All-In-Wonder series card if you are doing any kind of video capture or want a TV Tuner. They have great image quality now also and the drivers have really matured. The latest models are fully DX9 ready.
-
I don't know but you might want to consider a good Matrox card instead. No point spending money on fancy 3D stuff that you aren't going to use, and the 2D picture quality of the Matrox cards is top notch; might be more stable too. Just curious but if you aren't gaming, why do you want a DX9 card?

I'm not positive but I believe that is Dell's version of the S.M.A.R.T utility which monitors your hard drives for signs of failure. Try your other IDE hard drive and see if you still get that message. If everything works your other hard drive is most likely to blame. If you still get the error something is probably not configured correctly. Check your cables and make sure the drives are set properly (master/slave). You may need to go into the BIOS setup and configure it to boot from the IDE device rather than SCSI. Don't pay any attention to the EIDE/IDE thing, they are one and the same. Hope that helps.

Did you get the right flash plugin? You need the one for Netscape based browsers, not for IE. When you install it you should see Firefox 0.91 listed in the browser select screen.

These should get you started. http://www.homenethelp.com/ics/index.asp http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;234815

Windows 98 SE was released in 1999 actually; however they did do a little hex editing on it in order to get the VER command to report it as MS-DOS 7.10 instead of Windows 98, and that version number (7.10.1999) is totally fake.

There was never really a standalone version of MS-DOS 7.1 released. Someone just ripped it from Windows 98 and made it into a standalone installation. As for replacing files from Windows 98 with these, it would be completely pointless since they are the same files.

Try Adobe Reader Speedup; it removes all of those useless plugins and the program will launch much much faster.

Thanks

For selling it on eBay? Nah. If they wanted to be sadistic they could have let him come home from school to find this:

I would like to make a restore CD for a family member that will work like those from companies like Compaq. That is you just boot from the CD and select Restore from a menu, and it will do the rest. Will either Norton Ghost or Drive Image let me do this?
-
AIDA32 is called Everest Home Edition now, so look for that in order to get the latest version.

They are pretty much the same, though XP has a few more available options you can use such as choosing which visual style you want as default, etc.

You can also go to Start, Run, and type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2 to bring up the "Users and Passwords" control panel applet. It's exactly the same as it was in Windows 2000; just uncheck the box that says "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". It will then ask for the user name and password that you wish to log into automatically.
