  1. Looks like you're right. Sorry, my mistake.
  2. You cannot install Internet Explorer 5.5 on Windows 95. The last version to support it was IE 5.01 SP2.
  3. My Windows Update CD finally came today, and it's pretty nice. When you put the disc in it brings up a window where you can choose to scan your system for needed updates. It's like Windows Update except offline; of course you still have to go to Windows Update for the latest patches but this will save a lot of downloading for people on dial up connections. It also has a Security Advisor section that will turn on the firewall and automatic updates. This will help with all the novice users who are running bare systems and spreading worms and viruses like Typhoid Mary. There is a second CD included that comes with a trial version of EZ Armor LE which appears to be a firewall and anti-virus program. Overall I like it, and you can't beat getting it for free. I just wonder how often they will release these update discs (if ever again) and if we'll have to order them each time.
  4. It should work. I have installed both NT 3.1 and 3.51 on a laptop by copying all the files via floppy to a single folder and then booting with the three NT startup disks. It should ask for the location of the setup files at some point. If you have Easy CD Creator instead of Nero just start a new data CD project, drag the folder with the NT setup files into it and any other files you want to add. I would include all the updates and latest service pack in another folder for instance. It probably doesn't matter but the volume name for the retail CD was NTWKS351. You can download Service Pack 5 here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?....51/default.asp
  5. I just finished NOLF2 a few weeks ago and have not played much of anything since then. I guess I've gotten a bit bored with games, though I dug out my old Moto Racer game and played through it again today. The saying is true, graphics aren't everything.
  6. As of version 0.7, Mozilla Firebird is now my default browser. I only use IE for Windows Update (obviously) and what few sites do not work properly with other browsers. I did start out on Netscape years ago, so I have some fondness for that name but it's just not a very good browser anymore. So I used Resource Hacker to change all my Firebird icons to the old Netscape icons. Now all is good...
  7. This is how I had mine. It seemed to work ok, but I guess I should add that qchain thing at the end. I just left the last patch with no switches so it would ask me to restart.
  8. Windows XP does not allow limited accounts full access to either the "Windows" or "Program Files" directories. So if you install an older program that was not designed for use on multi-user operating systems they sometimes will not work properly in limited accounts. One way to fix this that I now use for older games and programs is this; do not install them to the program files directory. Make a new directory and name it something like Legacy Programs and install to that location. This way limited accounts will be allowed full access and should work properly. That's not a guarantee though; some programs also try to write to the registry for example. The only sure way I know of is to get an updated version of the program or one from another company that does work. For blocking popups and tons of other annoyances I use a free program called Proxomitron. Another good one is Ad Muncher but it is shareware.
  9. It's extremely stable, more up to date than XP, very fast, and it isn't loaded down with much of the crap that is in XP. All the legacy garbage is gone also, making it much more stable and faster, though less compatible. I guess the main reason is because they want to. Many people enjoy this type of thing.
  10. 1. Go to Start, Run, and type diskmgmt.msc 2. Right click on your XP partition and assign it a drive letter. Hope that works

  12. No, it will not operate correctly and will cause a system crash (blue screen) when installed on Server 2003. I doubt they will ever release a free version for a server operating system. You may have to wait for them to update their pay version to support 2003, if they haven't already. Version 2.1.5 is the latest version of Kerio Personal Firewall; there is no 4.04. That must be one of their other products. http://www.kerio.com/kpf_releasehistory.html
  13. Ok, after visiting that link I think I see where the confusion is coming from. The title is "Windows 2000 Home Page". This means it is the "home page" of Windows 2000, not a page for "Windows 2000 Home". That does not exist. Cal2002 listed the correct four versions.
  14. Actually I'm pretty sure you can use the "Win Server 2003 Optimize Tool" to enable the welcome screen and fast user switching. This should enable the user pics as well. It does a lot of other stuff too of course; you can download it here: http://hot.ee/salasource
  15. Here is a guide that will walk you through all the steps. Good luck
  16. Windows does, but I believe it depends on whether your video cards support it or not.
  17. Be sure to enable the Windows Image Aquisition service (WIA). Type services.msc to get to the settings. You may want to check out the 2003 to a workstation guide for more advice.
  18. I can't imagine why not, as long as you purchased a legal copy. All you are mainly doing is changing certain settings such as memory and cpu use, and activating already present services such as audio, 3d acceleration, etc., which is perfectly fine to do. This probably goes against some license agreements of certain software, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. As for the XP parts, if you own a copy of XP I see nothing wrong with it. Yes, it works the same either way. Yes I haven't myself, but I imagine they would work just fine as long as they are supported in Windows XP and 2003. It takes a bit of work to get everything set up properly, and some devices may not be supported. I could not install the Intellipoint software for example. As for using it as a workstation, I tried it until my evaluation time ran out and went back to XP. It does make a nice workstation, but XP is more widely supported for home use and a whole lot easier to set up. That's just my opinion though, your mileage may vary.
  19. I recommend updating to service pack 4, which is the latest. A lot of stuff needs at least sp3 installed, not to mention all the bug fixes. You only need to download sp4 though, it includes all the previous service packs. Good luck with it.
  20. Yeah, I see what he was saying now. Sorry darph
  21. I have never used Red Hat Linux but I have Mandrake 9.0 and it can read NTFS partitions just fine. Seems like Red Hat should be able to also, but it may not auto-mount them the way Mandrake does. You may have to figure out how to do that. As far as I know Linux cannot write to NTFS partitions, they are read only.

    Bluescreen.

One possibility is that one of your hardware devices is not getting along with the way Windows is sharing IRQs. If possible try shutting down and removing one card at a time, starting up without each one. If Windows starts up without the error you've found the card responsible. Try uninstalling it's drivers completely and make sure it's gone from the device manager, then shut down and reinstall the card. If Windows boots up ok, it was probably the drivers. If not try moving the card to another slot, or changing it's IRQ setting manually. Hope that helps.
  23. If you mean the convert command, it won't work. That is only for converting FAT32 to NTFS; unfortunately it won't work the other way around. Do you have enough room to move it all to one or two of the partitions, and then do a clean reformat of the third? If you juggle the stuff around like that you might be able to reformat them all. You might want to consider getting some type of high capacity backup device, maybe a tape drive or DVD-R/RAM. If the hard disk were to fail, and they can do it with no warning, all that data would be lost.
  24. Partition Magic can convert NTFS to FAT32, supposedly without losing any data. I would still suggest backing up anything important first, just in case.
