  1. Below is a link to a patched sfcfiles.dll for SP2 (with the PE header modified), ready to be put onto a CD. I tested it in VirtualPC and it worked OK. Folders in Program Files are now deletable http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/sfcfiles.dl_
  2. In that case, it would be nice to be able to remove those entries from the sfcfiles list
  3. +1 I have used the hacked SFC_OS.dll + registry method to disable WFP before, but all I really want to do is delete those annoying folders that XP puts in the Program Files directory (e.g. "xerox", "MSN Gaming Zone", "Movie Maker", etc). Is there any way to remove these from the list of protected files rather than disabling WFP altogether. And also, does anyone know why the heck those stupid folders are considered protected system folders in the first place? Disable WFP, delete the folders, then re-enable it. Does that work?
  4. Trying reburning the CD. Or better yet, try the ISO in VirtualPC and see if that works.
  5. *sigh* I wish the forum had better searching. I remember seeing it in a thread and replying asking specifically if there were risks to doing it. The point of the hack was so that the registration screen + music wouldn't even start up (versus the current status where it starts then immediately quits).
  6. I remember seeing awhile back (though I can't seem to find it now with search) a way to disable OOBE without breaking the install (services not starting and such). Has this been accomplished with SP2 yet? If so, what must be done?
  7. It's too bad that MS isn't using 16x12 as the default wallpaper resolution.
  8. Maybe just an unpinning then
  9. Now that SP2 is available to the public, maybe it's time to lock this thread and let it fade into oblivion? http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&displaylang=en
  10. It will be on Microsoft's Download servers tomorrow, wait till then A certain someone was kind enough to send it to me
  11. I've been using Java 5.0 beta 2 (renamed from 1.5.0) and it's been solid for me.
  12. Yeah, I think I've heard that one a few times before from you Glad to be back .
  13. makecab /D CompressionType=LZX file.xyz I'm pretty sure that's what MS uses since the LZX compressed files were the same size as the original MS ones.
  14. I did that too and mine came out to 585MB.
  15. I'm using that already. So when i install from slipstreamed SP2, MS JVM isn't even installed? But if it is, of course i wanna have the latest version, even if i don't use it. I'm weird like that MS took the JVM out of their service packs from Win2K SP4 and WinXP SP1a onward.
  16. Or you can use SP2 as an opportunity for a fresh start and use the Sun Java VM instead
  17. Do you use LZX compression when you use makecab? EDIT: I checked and you didn't, nevermind. If you're interested, you can knock about 5k off the size of SFC_OS.dll and about 15k off the size of UXTHEME.dll by enabling it.
  18. Does the hive file have to be edited, or will adding the registry entry be enough? The hive file entry is only if you want it disabled during setup, right?
  19. Create the shortcut pointing to the right spot, then add it to the archive.
  20. To my best recollection (and according to Creative's website ), WinXP has built in drivers which support those cards and Creative never released any other drivers for them.
  21. I can definitely attest to the fact that many drivers for the same products DON'T always work. I've seen numerous cases with various Highpoint/Silicon Image controllers where older drivers work fine and newer ones cause BSODs.
  22. The new technique should yield DRIVER.CAB files that are about 10% bigger than the older version. Check the size of this file from the two different versions. On a full DRIVER.CAB file, saving that 10% can easily add 5 minutes to install time. Tradeoff ... OK, you've piqued my curiosity. What is being done different compared to standard LZX compression?
