  1. I bring mIRC to school with me and run it from my flash drive, but at random points it will give me that box that says 'mIRC has caused an illegal operation...' It's running fine and then just does that all of the sudden...sometimes it works great and sometimes it does it a lot. Any reason why? Could it be because I'm running it from my flash drive? I'm assuming so since it doesn't do it when I copy to the hard drive, it runs fine, but I'd like to keep it going from my flash drive if possible.
  2. My take on this would be (and I know nothing about booting from network, mind you), but if you booted into dos and ran a batch file extracting files from the ISO before installation began, this should be possible. I know Windows WinRAR extracts ISOs, so maybe the Dos version would do the same thing?
  3. Not that I'm a major NO-PIRACY advocate, but isn't this piracy? We're getting out of buying VMWare... O_o One of those fine-line issues, I guess.
  4. Someone mirror this before it (probably) goes down. Looks a bit advanced, but someone who is messing around with this already could take a look and tell people how to use it better. You type in the answers to questions (IDE Master, Slave, Sound device, Ethernet devices, etc...) and it will generate a VMX for you. http://www.consolevision.com/members/dcgrendel/vmxform.html
  5. Hey all, I had a lot of troubles with XP being slow and clunky on my sub-par hardware, so I moved to Windows 2000 Professional and it runs like a dream! My question is, why 98? Why not just move up to Windows 2000? It's got only a slight requirement difference to my knowledge and it's compatible with all new software and games. I understand the security issue but anyone that is relativly smart can avoid these problems.
  6. well, i'm pretty sure you can mod foobar to do this, or winamp is basically like that anyway., just make it small.
  7. Hey there, I was recommended to a Linux distro called Ubuntu, people say it's good for newbs, so I said Sure. I installed it, but it won't boot up, it says that the X interface thing failed to load, and when I looked at the advanced log, it said that "No devices detected." I want to use both Win and Linux, I even tried switching to my integrated gfx but it does the same thing, any advice? It's a Dell Dimension 2400, my gfx card is a GeForce 5200FX PCI and my integrated is some variety of Intel. EDIT: Also, now I can't boot into XP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It just freezes at the boot screen. I can boot into Windows 2000, but I don't want to.
  8. I think I've decided on Ubuntu for now, to try anyway, what sort of applications would I get so there's not a lot of adapting involved as far as applications and such, I've downloaded Firefox and Gaim, but I'm looking for an iTunes replacement, something with the same interface. Also....when I download programs for this distro, I want the Debain packages, right?
  9. I'm downloading Ubuntu right now via BT, now when I've used Linux in the past, I've had trouble using my USB flash drive...how would I get this set up? If it matters, it's a Sandisk Cruzer Mini 1GB and then a Simpletech 512MB
  10. Alright, first of all, I feel like an as***** for posting this here, simply because it's a windows board, but this is the only place I knew of people that would actually know something and not just bul***** to me. I'm looking for a linux distro that I can try out, just to sort of get a feel for things. What I'm mainly looking for is something high-security, to make myself invisible while I'm online, and with a lot of tools to help me monitor ports open, in/out connections, etc... but still allows me to be productive online, mainly instant messaging, music, and browsing / downloading. Any recommendations? MY specs: Dell Dimension 2400 Intel Celeron 2.4ghz 384MB RAM nVidia GeForce FX 5200 PCI 40GB IDE drive
  11. I just upgrade my space as needed, I had a 40GB drive that was filled with music, so what I did was added another 12GB and filled it with some of my music. I am building a new PC and getting a 160GB drive to make sure I never run out of space.
  12. I found a 160GB Retail Segate SATA drive for $112 dollars on newegg, but I also found an OEM Maxtor Diamondmax 300GB drive for around $120, and wanted to know if the speed that SATA gives it worth it. Almost double the space, which I probably will never fill up for 8 dollars more is a great deal, but I want to know if the speed that Sata gives is worth the lesser space. I probably wouldn't fill the 160GB drive either.
  13. I lied, I just tried Shareaza and it pwns me.
  14. yeah, uh, i don't know if this is where we put feature requests...great job by the way, i love it, but i'd like to see a progress bar in the boot screen...i really don't know why, but it makes me uneasy not to know for sure that the thing hasn't frozen...
  15. I don't think I'd have a need to overclock, will i? But, cheaper is always better. Again, I'd rather not have to go through a huge forum to learn how to set up my mobo. And, it appears that the AN8s on Newegg don't support dual-core... Would this be a good board? I'm a little uneasy about getting an off-brand, but the reviews are good... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16813188003 Plus, it's got the onboard LAN and everything so only three PCI slots shouldn't be bad, Thanks! This one looks good also...and it's not an off brand, know anything about Biostar? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16813138248
  16. Well here's the situation, it's for college so I'm going to pay for it mostly using the misc. fund i get with my student loan, so I'm looking to spend whatever (hopyfully not over $1000 though) and just get something that will last me the whole college experience and after when I venture out into the brave new world, so to speak. I'm not sure how much RAM I need, that's the problem, I know I want to be able to play Half-Life 2, but it doesn't have to run at full specs, just as long as it's not jerky. My usual load on normal useage is Windows xP Pro with iTunes, Trillian, PHotoshop CS2, Microsoft Word, Frontpage, and tons of unnecessary system tray icons. I'd love to run StyleXP also. I was thinking around 1GB...too low? 1,5GB maybe? Thanks for the help. EDIT -- That mobo has warnings of NOT FOR N00BS written all over it. I, however, AM a n00b and want to be able to use the thing right out of the box...Thanks!
  17. I have a proc picked out for a new PC I'm building...and people all over have told me that an ASUS board is the best, but I can't seem to find one that supports the proc that I picked out...it's an Athlon 64X-2 Dual-Core http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819103562 <-- the proc Anyway, on Newegg at least, I can't seem to find a board that is made by Asus that supports the dual-core, and I want to be able to take full advantage of this, considering all the money I'm spending on it, what other brand of mobo's can you guys/girls recommend to me? I want something that I can configure and customize the hell out of, and that can take full advantage of my proc. Thanks for the help! (And while you're at it...best RAM brand? How much should I need for XP Pro with the occasional high-end game?)
  18. Guys and gals... Bearshare Pro! ^_^ It's not even on the list though.
  19. i'm thinking about the only thing you can do is install windowblinds. stylexp doesn't work and just f***s up win2k...i just experienced that myself. =P
  20. magicfly: I'm looking to have it automattically set up all my apps but I'm not sure if it does this the same way as XP. I know I can do an unattended, but can it install all of my apps like RunOnceEx does in XP? Bashrat: Not downgrading, just wiping and want a custom cD.
  21. My simple questions is...can I do all the things with Windows 2000 Pro setup I can do with XP? I'm looking to have it automattically set up all my apps but I'm not sure if it does this the same way as XP. Thanks!
  22. my computer has been on since before you were born. how about that?
  23. I think it sounds like a great idea. Everyone is always up for something better. I can help on the graphics end, let me know.
  24. I would assume and was told that I had bad performance because of the Celeron. But, is there any recommendation as to what I can do to get XP to run good again?
  25. Okay, thanks for the help all. I had XP on the PC with 128MB of ram and upgraded to 384 WITH xp still on there. Still ran like s*** (from the moment I pulled it out of the box.) Then, I fell into the world of nLite / unattended / etc... and made myself an nLited ISO...still ran horrible (better, but horrible.) I'm not even talking about GAMES here, just apps. Normally, I use Firefox, Trillian, iTunes, and (sometimes) Frontpage and Photoshop. I was told that it was because of the Celeron and it's cheap build that killed my multitasking cpaabilities. Now, with 2000 (Server), it runs like a dream with everthing I need to do (including games). I just wanted to know, since you have all the service packs and everything, if I could squeeze even more performance out of my machine with Windows 98. Sure, I'll go back to XP if it would run good and do everything I need it to do. But, I don't see it happening.
