  1. i had been using an nlited xp, still slow. ill never use xp again on this pc.
  2. hey all, i have a dell dimension 2400, intel celeron 2.4ghz with 384MB of RAM. the system originally came with windows xp home edition and 128mb ram which i later upgraded to pro and they both ran like s***e. so i recently put windows 2000 server on there and it runs GREAT, i love it. now i see all this new windows 98 stuff and looking at teh revolutions pack, it looks (and acts) like XP and i like that a lot. do you think it would be worth downgrading to 98se with all the special packs or is 2000 ultimatley better?
  3. There is a website you can go to... http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/ that will answer all your questions. Or, find a LiveCD with the NTFS driver integrated.
  4. haha, white stripes. anyway, my experience is doing an upgrade will cost you countless hours of application compatibility issues, patching, etc... go for the clean install.
  5. one of the school admins here just came to me and said that some students were downloading a program (she does not know the name of it) and were pressing a shortcut key (supposedly crtl + alt + shift + f) and being able to view and possibly change usernames and passwords on the (domain i believe) we run a windows 2003 server and all the workstations have XP Professional any thoughts as to what this might be? keep in mind that the kid could have been bulls***ting about kb shortcuts or whatever.
  6. So, I'm guessing there's no quick solution if it doesn't work? I'm very lazy. =P The mobo I was looking at had a disk for SATA drivers...would that be what I use when isntalling XP? I would think XP SP2 would come with them, but can I just intergrate them using nLite or something?
  7. i am putting together a PC for school, but want unbridled speed any way i can get it. in picking out an hd, someone told me that XP (pro) doesn't like sata and will not boot from it, so i need another ide drive to boot XP and use the sata drive for all my data. id rather not have to have a boot hdd AND a data hdd. thanks.
  8. The problem that originally brought this up was my buddy had bought a laptop on eBay and Windows Professional became corrupted, (and he had no CDs, I don't even know if the copy on the laptop was legit, but I assumed it was, since I saw no signs of crackage, customization, etc...) so I decided I would just use my XP Pro CD that came packaged with my Dell and figured I wouldn't have to activate it (since I didn't on my Dell), but I did, and I wanted to know (since I'm almost positive he has a valid license) if I could get a key to let me not activate it. Thanks for all the input though (-flames).
  9. Thanks for the help, Cartoonite. Yes, it is a public school, and yes, the tech people don't really know what they're doing, so they probably didn't even think of a VLK. And, I didn't even think of the activation that way, it makes sense that even if I did change what type of key it accepted, it would still require activation because of other files in the Home edition vs a VLK edition. Thanks for the help. (lock please.)
  10. OKay, I know it's piracy, but since when does anyone care about that around here? Don't BS me and say you have bought every piece of software you own. Not a big deal, however, I was most interested in my first question. They did buy ALL Their PCs from Dell. I Wasn't sure if they could just buy one key for every PC and pay like around $1,000 (maybe I'm shooting a bit low) or what. And, I know they didn't do this, so I couldn't use their key anyway. I wasn't asking for a CD Key or a pirated version, just if it was possible to allow my copy to ACCEPT these keys, therefore circumventing activations. Didnt say anything about copying, downloading or the like. Thanks for the input.
  11. I have this pasted into a text box in my VB applications. =========== [RS] 9828382 my_holiday_pictures.2.rar =========== I would like to know how to seperate all of this by... a. throwing out the ============ lines. b. taking the [RS], 2827273, and the filenamr and putting them all in seperate labels. How would I go about doing this by the pressing of one button? Being able to do it backwards would be great too, but not as important. Thank!
  12. hey, i have a question. well two, actually. first off, my school has over 400 PCs, and they bought seperate licenses for each one, wouldn't they just get a volume license key? and secondly, i remember reading somewhere that i can change a value to get my XP cd to accept a volume license key, and therefore, not require activation. can someone tell me if there is any truth to this? thanks.
  13. Lol...thanks for the sugestions, but I don't think they make a transmitter that can reach 25 miles. But, I just realized how dumb that question actually was...that is like asking if I connected straight to my AOL proxy without dialing up could I still use the internet? Doh. Lock please.
  14. OK, here's the deal...First off, I know nothing about broadband/DSL/whatever...My brother had DSL at his college dorm, and it wouldn't work right, so the techs gave his the correct IP/dns/etc... to put into his connection settings, which we still have on a little pink paper...which was irrelevant, but regardless...if I purchased a DSL modem (specifically this one, if it matters) and entered that information as my connection settings, could i pipe through to the college's connection and use it?
  15. Sorry, I just remember seeing a section using Resource Editor, and thought that's what they used it for. But, it may be able to help you along when editing the autorun program through a ResHack type of program.
  16. Hi all, I'm new here, so please don't kill me if this is a dumb question. I made my own XP cd using this guide and it works wonders -- except for the fact that it doesn't install any of my apps. What it does is, it uses my RunOnceEx.cmd to add the reg keys, and the window opos up to set them up, but during setup, it doesn't copy anything over, so it can't find any of the programs. I have it set to $OEM$\$1\Install but it doesn't copy over. The $$ stuff doesn't copy over to Windows folder either. Please help!
  17. There is a whole section in the Unattended guide about this.
  18. Love this, but here's what I did. The wrong English was bothering me, so I fixed it to correct English. It's attached... MediaSwitcher_CosmeticFixes.rar
