  1. I'm excited about AutoPatcher98, but lemme understand: it's just another unofficial update pack or -more interestingly- a cumulative installer of other (uSP, 98SE2ME, etc) packs ?
  2. ...good reasons for open sourcing Win9x ! If your conclusion is true, why this forum exist then ? We all know that *official* Win9x support is dead, but many enthusiasts are still working to continue its development... as already sayd, switching to open source could help other projects too !
  3. Since we'll probably have an open source Revolution Pack, i have remembered another great open source alternative to MS-Windows bundled apps: Media Player Classic ! We also have an interesting discussion @ ROS forum about an MS-Paint clone/substitute...
  4. Freeware IS NOT open source... Btw, i don't think DCOPY can compete with 2M... no other program can ! Even if i really like multiplatform software, i hope to see the "super format" at least on ReactOS (has it the same HAL limits ?)...
  5. More good reasons to upgrade it ! Cool, never heard it. Well, this inspired me an idea: Does someone here remembers the good old 2M, FDFormat or 800 tools ? (check out here or on this dir) It would be great to have an open source "super format" utility !
  6. I wanna suggest you to check the ROSapps: there are many interesting -GPL- tools (such as chkdsk) on the sysutils and cmsutils dirs. I also think that Package manager (SVN dir) and fraginator could be useful too.
  7. I succesfully partitioned a 160 Gb (2x80 RAID 0) volume with Free FDISK... Anyway i would ALWAYS prefer open source softwares over clodes ones, due to the possibility to adapt and improve them. As already mentioned: Official website
  8. Unavailability of the source code.
  9. Uhm... don't waste your "powers" for proprietary tools (that is ILLEGAL, too): Free FDISK - The official FDISK of FreeDOS
  10. Dah, this sounds bad (to me) ! Release it under an open source license (whichever you want, GPL-compatible preferred) if you want help&spread from the community...
  11. Well, something similar (or, better, identical) to my Open Sourcing Windows 9x idea. I think it's quite realizable today... Kernel Update Project Tango Desktop Project and my open source software list could be good to start
  12. Try hit Y istead of S... (it's a language problem, probably) @maninabox Any plan to translate the Windows 9x Power Pack ?
  13. Check my open source shells list too !
  14. Uhm, not mutch scientific to me... Well, i'm really interested in this tests, so why don't we plan a good competition between optimizers ? 1st: establishing rules (for example 'clean windows install' should be a rule ) 2nd: software optimizer's competitor list... - TuneUp Utilities 2006 - Ashampoo WinOptimizer Platinum - Dr.Salman's Window Power Tools - SpeedUpMyPC - Advanced System Optimizer - Innovative System Optimizer - Optimize Computer - TweakNow PowerPack 2006 Professional - Advanced Windows Optimizer - PCMedik - Windows System Optimizer - PC Optimizer - Speed-It-Up Extreme - System Energizer - WinBoost - X-Setup Pro ...more ? B) 3rd: choose test-software ! - . . . 4th: publish results !!! Best tweaks could be included in unofficial service pack....
  15. There are so mutch optimization tools that i don't know wich is better. Is would be great to have a comparison !
  16. Here's another betatester-candidate
  17. Err... http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=69343
  18. from OSNews.com: Calmira XP 4.0 beta gives the Windows 3.x desktop the WinXP look-and-feel. In this new version an XP taskbar has been added, and even experimental support for long file names. Other things Calmira includes is the XP login screen, and more.
  19. Oh, well... i found some windows ports ! Tango Icons port for Windows ! 3ad @ Neowin.net forum Tango Port for Windows XP @ deviatART ...and ---> Tango Shell Patcher @ DarkT.net
  20. Seems that ReactOS is adopting them: Hope to see a Tangoed 98...
  21. I browsed some interesting russian websites, check them out (links BabelFished): OS-X like mod BedOS
  22. Open Source fonts too !!! DejaVu fonts MgOpen typefaces Free UCS Outline Fonts and more... So what are we waiting ? Let's open windows 9x ! note: i'm not a developer
  23. Why not a Tango version ? Check out the Tango Icon Gallery
  24. This sounds like an insult (to me) for the active people that works on Unofficial Service Packs ! THEY ? Who ? Microsoft ? My idea is to WRITE (or better, to gradually substitute) any windows 9x component with an open source one. Why 'wasting' time on closed source Service Packs (that is unauthorized in any case), when you can save an os _permanently_ from the certain death ?
  25. I'm not a zealot 'cause i don't have a server ah home (Linux is _only_ for servers, in my opinion).I don't like so mutch windows (i'm an old OS/2 fan), but if it will be open, many other OSes could benefit. On the other side, if is open source it can evolve to a better stage... Anyway, remember that i'm not a developer and this is just an idea.
