  1. open a Command prompt and use: "expand -r *.dl_"
  2. I personally only put my swap file on a different drive , everything XP is on my C drive. But I use Drive Image once a week , so if things do go pear shaped on me I always have a fairly recent backup to hand - a real lifesaver that one
  3. I've been using an old 4x 730mb CD-RW for my test cd's - until my writer went tits up :/ Thank god for Virtual PC
  4. Spheris , my personal view is that the security hotfixes should take precedence over any functional improvements. My reason being that in the context of a custom XP install, users will be improving the functionality of XP to their own tastes with the various pieces of non-standard software that they choose to install. Whereas the seemingly never ending saga hotfixes and service packs supplied by MS , though not perfect, offers a solution to discovered security problems that is the easiest option for most users. cya.
  5. Cyrez WINNTBBU.DL_ is compressed in the Microsoft CAB format, ready for use by setup. To decompress it , open a Command prompt and use: "expand -r winntbbu.dl_" Or winrar can open these archives as well.
  6. b0r3d , You're welcome - just keep yer hands to yerself As for your problem , did you convert the background to 8 bit ( 256 colours ) before trying to import it ? On another note , if you're going to edit the display text , include a "|" before each word. It stops setup from splitting the words in half when it wraps the text . ie " |MSFN, |is |cool.." BTW , I've just popped the cherry of the new setup screen sticky thread
  7. Heres my latest : Just gotta change the the text to remind me what extras I'm installing Anyone figured out how to change the text / progress bar colours ?
  8. Yep , you can change the text. you need to edit the winntbbu.dll and then compress it : The compressed file is then used during setup. I look forward to seeing some nifty new setup screens sometime soon
  9. You're welcome Annoying , weird , problem that one. Google is a wonderful thing.... cya.
  10. Dunno about changing the text colour , but you can change its size in string table 2 , item 16="9" change the 9 to a smaller number and the text is altered.
  11. I had this problem some time ago - took me ages to sort it out. To see if this is the same problem I had , open regedit and select HKEY_CURRENT_USER in the left pane. In the right pane look at the (Default) key. Is there anything in the value ? it should say : (value not set) If it is blank , then thats the problem. Right click on the (default) key and delete it - windows will automatically re-create the key with the correct value assigned to it. I installed a version of Nero that did this to me once Hope this solves the problem for ya...
  12. I have the same problem , and yes , I have applied the patched uxtheme.dll and it's installed properly as I can select the theme manually once setup is finished. Any ideas ?
  13. Ooops , did'nt think about that I've censored the images for the easily offended
  14. Ok , well I've partially figured it out ..... Large pic here The file I hacked was I386/WINNTBBU.DLL ( I use resource Hacker ) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The main background is bitmap 103 ( 256 colours ) Bitmaps 100 , 101 , 102 are for the logo in the top left. Dunno why there are 3 - different resolutions maybe ? Bitmaps 185 to 188 are for the flashing activity glyphs in the bottom right. Bitmaps 104 , 105 , 109 are for the Status buttons on the left. You can change the text that is displayed by editing the String Table entries. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Once you're done editing you need to recompress the dll to winntbbu.dl_ to do this , open a cmd prompt in the I386 folder and type: "makecab winntbbu.dll" it'll create the winntbbu.dl_ for ya. Thats all I've figured out at the moment , have fun
  15. Want to install Norton Antivirus 2003 pro using only 25.7 megs of cd space ? Heres how : First read this post : http://www.MSFN.org/board/index.php?act=ST&f=70&t=7698 OK , so now you have only the required folders: nav , support and virus def. For me these are 46.3 megs - your mileage might vary. Now fire up Winrar and add the folders to a new archive called NAV2003 , and select "best compression method" and "create SFX archive" in the general tab. Goto the advanced tab and click the SFX options button. In the "path to extract " field , enter %systemdrive%\install\nav2003 (you may need to alter the path to suit your own needs). Select "create in the current folder" and ensure "save and restore paths" is checked. In the Modes tab , select "hide start dialog" and "overwrite all files" In the Text and Icon tab , enter the text to display as the files are unpacked ( ie : Unpacking NAV2003 ) Click OK to close the advanced SFX options window , and OK again to compress the files. Copy your new NAV2003.exe to your $OEM$\$1$\NAV2003 folder and add this to your .cmd batch: ECHO. ECHO Installing Norton Antivirus 2003 Professional ECHO Please wait... start /wait %systemdrive%\install\NAV2003\nav2003.exe start /wait %systemdrive%\install\NAV2003\NAV\NAV.msi /QB ECHO. When you come to install Nav2003 , the files are first decompressed , and then install runs as usual This method also works well for any other files that are highly compressable.
  16. I had the same problem copying shortcuts , now i use this cool little batch shortcut creator : http://www.otbsw.com/Files/sc12b3.zip works like a charm hope this helps...
